Disappointing news, what can I do?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I recently heard that I did not get in to the medical professions high school that I had really been hoping to go to next year. That would have been a great head start so I've been kind of down. I'm fourteen. The hospitals say I am too young to volunteer and I don't know if I am old enough to be a CNA (can't seem to find that age anywhere for my state, but I probably am too young). I'm feeling kind of hopeless because even though I am young, I really want to be able to do something nursing related. I want to be a pediatric nurse and while I can help my little cousins when they're sick, have a scrape, e.t.c, I'm pretty sure that's not quite how it is in a hospital ;)

Are there any good books about/written by pediatric nurses? Anything you would recommend me to do for a head start? Do you think I could possibly convince the hospital to let me volunteer early? (If you have any experiences with that, sharing would be great.) Basically, I want to do things I can to get experience, or learn about nursing.

Thanks in advance!

You're definitely too young to be a CNA. I don't even know if you're legal to work AT ALL (unless it's babysitting, family business, etc)

I'm sorry you didn't get into the high school you were hoping to. You're only 14, you have a lot of time to worry about a possible career path. Think about taking some duel credit classes and get a head start that way. Good luck.

Just wait a little bit, you're still young, enjoy your teenage year then welcome to the work force.

Holy, I am 20 and I feel to young to be 2 semesters away from getting my BSN and becoming an RN! LOL. Good for you for being so ambitious at such a young age!!! In high school we had a work experience program where we were able to rotate through my local hospital and job shadow. I went through lab, emerg, x-ray, nursing, hospice, and morgue. I then candy striped at a local care facility. I got a job at a pharmacy where they trained me as a pharm tech.. and then worked for a chiropractic office for a year. I took anything that was "health related" It was from these experiences that I decided I wanted to be a nurse.

I was in grade 10 though and then when i started working I was 18/19 years old. When I was 14 all I wanted to do was be with friends and be a teenager :) And now look where I am!!

You seem like a very motivated person and I am excited for you that you know what you want at such a young age. I have no doubt that things will fall into place for you :)

I applaud your enthusiasm and am sorry you didn't get in to the school you wanted to get in to. I know it doesn't feel this way to you now, but the next couple of years will pass quickly and soon you'll be old enough to volunteer at hospitals and become a CNA and then go on to nursing school (if that's still what you want to do).

In the meantime, make sure that the classes you take in high school set you up well for nursing school. You'll want to take plenty of math and science, and look at the requirements colleges you might want to go to have (many want 4 years of English, History, etc). Talk to a guidance counselor or advisor about your goals and let them help you select elective courses that put you on that road.

Good luck to you!

see if you can volunteer as a candy striper in the hospital or go to the hospital and see if you can volunteer as a reader to the children in pediatrics--that will get you some esposure to the environment Just a thought!

Wow you are ambitious! You have tons of time. Do not fret about not getting into a medical professions high school. I have never even heard of such a thing. I do not know one person who has done this prior to getting into nursing school. Just make sure you get good enough grades in high school to get into a college you want to go to. Research hospitals in your area to see where you can volunteer. Also, some hospitals have programs that allow a high school student to shadow a nurse for a day. This would be nice because then you will get an idea of what it is like to be a nurse. I can't believe you are only 14!! You have sooo much time!! Do not fret about this at all. Be proud of yourself for even thinking about your future at this point!

Good thinking! I started my first job when I was 15 (I wanted to know whether I want to be a teacher, so I found a job at summer school as a tutor). See if you can find a sitter volunteer position in a hospital or a clinic, or someone who reads to patients.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get into high school you wanted. My advice is, look at the prerequisites list in the universities/colleges where you want to go, and take these subjects in high school that you end up going to. Best of luck!

wannabe, i just had to jump in here, to commend you on your grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills.

you really impressed me, especially being 14.

and no text speak!!

keep up the excellent work, and do especially well in your sciences and maths.

you're going to be just fine, honey.

you're off to a great start already.

keep it going.:balloons:

Its admirable that you want to get a jump start on your career. At your age you will have a difficult time getting any job. A CNA job right now is impossible, you are too young.

Contact your local red cross and see what type of classes they have that you may be interested in.

I suggest taking First Aid and CPR, that way you can gain basic knowledge of caring for others when they are injured.

This summer, look for camp opportunities, you might enjoy some type of survival camp.

Another idea is to get involved with girl scouts, you will have the opportunity to learn many health related skills and have fun at the same time :)

To graduate from high school you will be required to participate in community service and accumulate a specific number of hours. Your counselors at school will help get you started. You may be able to volunteer at a hospital or nursing home.

I am sorry to hear that you didn't make it into your school of choice. Does the school that you are going to have a HOSA club or some kind of medical/science driven club? The Red Cross may let you do some volunteering at your age, but I think most places want you to be at least 15 before you volunteer.

You seem like a very bright 14 year old. I am sure you are going to do great in college despite not getting into this school.

You are an excellent writer. That is useful for nursing school. I was in a program in high school called Health Ancillary Training Service. and was able to work my whole senior year, 3 hours a day, at several hospitals in my area including UC Davis Medical Center. This was great for my career because I was exposed to all the different departments in the hospital. You've gotten good advice about where to volunteer for the next couple of years. 4H also has summer camps to give you more experience with children. Good Luck.
