Did I just sabotage my career before it even started?

Hello,

I've been having trouble finding a job and need some kind of income because money that I have saved up is almost gone. I talked myself into applying for a major hospital system that pretty much dominates most of Pittsburgh, well they brought me in for an interview a few days ago and the manager had one more person to interview but said I pretty much had the job. Yikes it just now hit me that I don't think I want to work for them right now as a new nurse, when I do get the job offer if I turn it down would that be a reason for them to blacklist me for ever working for them in the future? If I go through their orientation that's a few weeks long and manage to work on the floor and decide it's not for me can I put in a two week notice or do you think they blacklist because it looks like you wasted their time? I'm just so upset about all of this and for some reason the thought of working there makes me depressed because I did most of my school clinical rotations there and absolutely hated that place. I know I shouldn't have applied but I couldn't help it and at the time I was just so depressed about finances and taking care of two kids with money that may last if I'm lucky for the next month... Any advice I would greatly appreciate it because right now life sucks and I feel so helpless with no way out...

I guess if you are not really desperate for income or worried about finding another job, then don't accept the offer.

Yeah -- I'm sure she can find some other way to feed her children.

I wish I was in your position. Graduated in May 2013 and still no interview let alone a job offer. As a new grad, I don't think you should turn down such a job offer. You said you had trouble getting work to begin with. How long do you think its going to take you to get another offer. Unless there is something you are not telling us.

I have not read the other comments on your post, and I see that you're upset/depressed. I would like to ask you to ask yourself why did you hate the place - was it the nurses, the attitudes, the patients? Did you have a traumatic experience there - did one of your patients die? Was your professor harsh to you? I would like to convince you to accept this position - seeing as you really need the money. But you really need to resolve it within yourself (QUICKLY) to figure out why you hated it so much. Remember: You WERE a student then, you didn't know a whole lot and that in itself can bring about a lot of feelings/memories of FEAR and ANXIETY. But you are NOW a graduate nurse, you are LICENSED, so you know more than you did before, and you can now tackle whatever it is that you were once afraid of. You'll most likely have an excellent preceptor who will totally understand your anxiety as a new grad (we've all been new at one point) - they will be friendly and orient you to the hospital and the floor you're assigned to and everything will be fine. Best of luck to you. You can do it!!! Everything will be fine. Breathe. And Smile!

Your situation is rough, but pray about it. I would never want to take a job I do not like....even if I am broke, and near starving;only you can make the decision about what you really want.

Not taking a job when you are broke and near starving is one thing. Feel free to make decisions about what you really want and what will make you happy.

Not taking a job when you are broke and your KIDS are near starving is quite another thing. Suck it up, take the job and feed your kids. They're YOUR responsibility and you owe them better than this.

I would definitely take the offer. Take it from me from personal experience: I work at a large health system as well in PA, and absolutely hate my job. Not the nursing aspect, but the staffing, politics, what have you. However, the looming cloud of debt and student loans have kept me here. Plus, in the mere seven months I've been here I have learned invaluable experience and continue to learn more! It sucks, I won't lie, but if ignore the politics and focus on the nursing, just go to work for work and come home with food for your children you will be much happier. And think of it this way, get your one year of hospital experience (or more if you can muster it) and then you can leave and apply to other hospitals and clinics! There is a silver lining around this dark cloud, you just have to back up to see it :)

Yeah, I know that hospital system. Made my entire family miserable because my mother worked for them at some point in her

career on evening shift. Doesn't matter; if you get the job, take it, get your benefits, stay in your unit for awhile and transfer to where you need to go for your own happiness.

Ask yourself if you would be more depressed when you are poor 24/7 or when you spend 40 hours a week working at a place that you don't like. Then you know what's the right thing to do.
