Did anyone try to talk you out of being a nurse?

Published

Absolutely nobody around me wants me to be a nurse. I am currently a Realtor and everyone thinks I should stick with it. I HATE REAL ESTATE! You don't know where the next check is coming from, it is SO expensive to get started and keep going, I have to work from home so I feel like I am always working, it is cut-throat, greedy and most importantly, I get no satisfaction from it.

I have wanted to be a nurse for three years now and was suppose to start LPN school last fall, but I got pregnant and the school requested me to not start b/c the baby was due in the middle of the program. That worked out b/c he ended up a preemie. But they saved my spot for this year.

I have had to do everything secretly. My financial aid, I am studying up on A&P, I even have a second job to carry me through paying off the credit I had to use for real estate so that I can use that credit for books and such.

Did anyone here ever have to go up against anyone to become a nurse? I really want this, but I don't know how to handle it. When you are doing something as tough as nursing school, you need support. No matter what I am going to school...that is one thing I am sure of.

Thanks for listening!

For real, I got talked into it. I never wanted to be a nurse. I was a farrier, did corrective horseshoeing and loved it, trained horses etc. I started dispatching for a local ambulance service as a volunteer and was talked into taking EMT classes. I did that and then I was convinced to become a paramedic. I volunteered with a few nurses who were also EMTs and paramedics, they did give me a direction to follow. But this was in the late 80's early 90's when nurses were not needed as much so it took me a while to find a job. Maybe that was a good thing because I did have a lot of fun as a nurse. I started in a local in town hospital that was awesome as far as my training. Med-surg then to ICU/CCU then off to specialty flight team. You get what you want from a nursing career. If that is what you want to do then go for it.

"Did anyone try to talk you out of being a nurse?"

I tried to talk myself out of becoming a nurse when I initially made the decision to become one. I never once in my life thought of being a nurse...only a doctor ( a surgeon at that). My girlfriend talked me into it, so I said what the heck...I'll give it a shot. In retrospect, I wish I had been more successful at talking myself out of it because now I'm wanting to be the doctor I always wanted to be since I was eight years old. :uhoh21:

I too was a realtor before becoming a nurse, and stopped real estate due to the major cost of being a realtor...not sure WHEN the next check would happen. I also got sick and tired of the office meetings due to the thick film and smell of cigerette smoke in the room. (hack, hack, hack):uhoh3: Enough already! So, I put my license on escrow (you can do that for one year as a realtor), and went back to school without knowing what I was going for exactly until I became very good friends with my best friend today. She and I went through the program together. I had such great friends in nursing school, and really good instructors which is what helped me to stay focused and hungry for it. I was the first of six kids to graduate college, so it was a major accomplishment for me and my family. :)

I say go for it. Don't listen to the other people... they are not you.

I have 6 family members who are RN's. All but one have tried talking me out of it. They tell me that I am going to make a huge mistake and that it is a very dissatisfying career. They love their patients and what they do, but not the working conditions. Also, at first my husband was trying to tell me to do something else. I refused and have followed my heart ever since. I tell them that I will find out for myself and if I regret it later on, then ultimately it is only one me :p

God these posts are so depressing. Makes me wonder why I want to enter the field at all....:crying2:

No one is really happy for me either....going to NS, becoming a nurse. I don't think I can think of even one other professional field that has so much negativity surrounding it, which amazes me in some ways since apprarantly we need nurses...

I know this is a bit off topic from your question, but I just had to say I think what that school did was probably illegal. I'm glad it worked out for you, but I still think what they did was discriminatory.

For the most part, I was supported when I decided to go to nursing school. I did get my fair share of "why don't you become a doctor?" comments, but those pretty much ended once I started school. I did recently have someone ask me if I had an plans for medical school, which was disappointing.

It's a shame you feel you have to work towards your dream in secret. I say go for it.

Good luck!

My husband has tried repeatedly to talk me out of it. He says why don't I just stay home and take care of the kids, house, him. I want to know there is more to life. I don't want my life to pass me by without realizing my dream so that's why I'm going for it. I'm glad you are going for it too. I look forward to reading more posts from you so please keep us updated.

It is great to hear from you b/c the main person I am dealing is my husband! He saw one of my commission checks and thinks real estate is the life. He just doesn't realize that is not always this nice, plus he thinks I have it easy b/c I work from home even though I work a min. of 60 hours a week. If he saw a net sheet of how much of the commission checks are just me getting what I spent back...they are actually in the negative!!!

So we try it! Either we will love it or hate it, but at least we will know! Keep in touch and we can at least gripe and share stuff if they don't want to hear it! :p

I wish you luck and thanks for posting-I am so glad to know I am not alone!

Have you and your husband really had a heart-to-heart? The reason I ask is that you have a child and will have a lot of studying to do...will he be supportive of you at all? Does he know yet about your secret preparations?

My point is just that--from my own experience---having a helpful spouse as opposed to one who isn't helpful--is very important. Especially w/ child care and privacy for studying. Good luck with this!

THis is also off topic, but I'm not to savvy with real estate so I'm wondering (and probably others are too) what expense do you have? I would think there woudn't be much overhead. Pleae don't flame me, I'm real estate illiterate!:uhoh21:
