Dexcom

Do you have students that use this as part of their DM management? If so, do you download the app on your phone, as well?

We have students in other schools in the district that use this, or something similar. Our nurses do not do anything on their personal phones. Too much possible liability is what the thinking was, I think. Their school bought ipad minis for the nurse to use during the school day.

Yes and I heavily resist using my personal phone for this. Because I am only responsible from 0725-1455 and I don't want the potential liability of having this on my phone, which is not secure.

The school issued iPads to all of us, and I can use that if needed. Ipad stays in my office when I am not at school.

Great minds think alike....

I use it for one of my students and perhaps taboo, I downloaded it onto my phone. But I shut off notifications for it when I am not working.

This is for a student whose family I have been working with for years, mom is a nurse, and knows I shut it off when I'm home. I do have an old phone that I have been debating downloading it on for use at school with the school Wi-fi only long term, because the notifications can be constant depending on the student's set perimeters.

As a tool is fascinating! The student using it is new to it and we're learning a lot about it and how it can be best used as a tool for her together.

I have a student using it but I do not have it on my phone. My thoughts were exactly as those above, it is my phone and there is a lot of liability that comes along with that. As of now, parents just contact me if they feels like there is an issue or it is doing something wonky!

If you do ever want to see how it works, there is an sample app you can download that shows you how the dexcom works, which is helpful to help a student or parent navigate it.

Thank you!

I have multiple dex coms and use a school provided iPad. Put my foot down about that. Was a non-issue when I told admin that if I had to use my personal phone then so did the kiddos teachers.

The parents provided me with an old iPhone to keep at my desk. Student's mother also has one. This works out well for us.

One of our kids in the district has a smart watch that links with his dexicom which is super cool. They use that number for treatment at meal times

One my middle school diabetics uses Dexcom on her phone and apple watch. I do not use the app in any form, but both of her parents have the app and will quickly call me if they see anything out of the ordinary. This student is very mature and independent in treating her diabetes at school.

This has been a discussion in and among many school districts in our area also. Some districts have decided they will have nothing to do with the CGM including monitoring it at school. The parents are the only ones to monitor it remotely. Other districts have issued cell phones to their nurses for monitoring purposes. Others use iPads at the school. In my district I think we only have 1 student who is monitored at school on the clinic issued receiver not a cell phone. All of the others are monitored by only their parents. We have 10 diabetics at our high school and several each at most of our other 12 buildings so monitoring them all would feel like a little telemetry unit in our health office! We have already decided that we would deny a parent request to put the app on a personal cell phone.
