Devastated.

So I'm a new grad and just like all the other new grads, I've been having a tough time finding a job. I had all of my friends hand out my resume to people with connections with hopes of at least landing an interview. One of the people with connections to a hospital I've actually done rotations in called me tonight. It started off as an ambush interview and ended w/ her basically telling me that I'm not desirable right now as a new grad w/ an ASN. She gave me a 10 minute lecture about how I shouldn't be picky and take any job I can get, even in a nursing home (which I HAVE applied to, with NO responses). I almost cried on the phone but waited till we hung up before bawling. I'm so devastated. I know how horrible the economy is today and how BSN's are more desirable. I really feel down on my luck. I DO want to get my BSN but right now I can't afford it. I was hoping to get a job so I can afford my tuition. Now, with no job and no BSN, I really don't know what to do. :crying2:

I totally feel your pain! I cried on and off for two hours today after getting a similar rejection. I have a BSN, and I was actually told I should start working on a master's so that I could be more competitive. I got off the phone just screaming and crying. More and more jobs I'm seeing say "BSN required, MSN preferred." Imagine - an MSN to work nights in some crappy hospital. I'm already 50k in debt, almost homeless and desperate as can be. I don't know what to tell you other than you are absolutely not alone. I wrote to my state senators last week, maybe you should try. Someone needs to start listening to us.

Specializes in Triage, MedSurg, MomBaby, Peds, HH.

Aw, I'm really sorry you are feeling down. Believe it or not, even New Grads with BSN's are having a very difficult time finding work right now. I hope you find something soon!

Specializes in Mental Health Nursing.

Have you tried staffing agencies? Especially home health agencies. They're hiring new grads more than any other nursing field right now.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Try these:

Search for Jobs at the Department of Veterans Affairs

Indian Health Service

More government jobs: USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site -- try agencies like the Bureau of Prisons (BOP)

And I know these people hire new grads:

Mollen Immunization Clinics - Join Our Team

It's seasonal, but pretty much a sure thing.

I am so sorry you're finding yourselves in this predicament ... it breaks my heart.

Specializes in NICU.

wait a second.....this hospital called you and proceeded to chew you out for not having a BSN? that doesn't make any sense. If they weren't interested in your ADN, why would they call you to tell you that and more and basically make yourself feel useless?!?!

I'm so sorry, who ever called you sounds like an awful person. Try your best to forget about them and continue doing what you're doing to try and get yourself a job at a hospital that won't belittle you.

Good luck, I'm a new grad too, I know how you feel.

This may be a dumb question but can we pursue our MSN without hospital experience first? I have been thinking about this a lot since I haven't found a job yet. I'm married but we don't have any kids yet so this would be a great time for me to do this if it is possible.

Yes, some nursing schools will accept a person without experience for their MSN program. One of my classmates was accepted to our school's MSN program before she even finished the BSN program. She had not worked one day in health care. Ever.

Oh really thanks caliotter. My thing is I would be nervous or feel weird knowing I haven't had any experience but with the way things are going maybe that's the plan God has for some of us.

Yes, that's exactly what happened. I wish she just said "I'm sorry, we don't currently have any openings for new graduates with ADNs" and ended it there....

Thanks for the support. That phone call was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back. I definitely hope things turn up from now on...

Just another side of the same thread here... It would seem that the so-called "nursing shortage" is being followed by the so-called N.P. "shortage", meaning that many N.P.s and other Masters-prepared students aren't getting jobs, either. Of course, the perpetuance of the shortage rumors are good for business, from the hospitals' perspectives. I would hate to throw more good money after bad, as they say, to go further into debt, if, in three years, the job prospects will not be any better. Just my .02...

I find this to be really odd. I worked for a home health (not recently) and there was no way we ever hired new grads. Very strict on number of years experience as you are alone at the home with no back up support....well other than by telephone and 911.
