Decisions. decisions

Hi, I'm new this site and thought that maybe the members here can help me. I'm trying to make a very critical decision. I currently hold a B.S. degree in biology and i've currently applied to 2 accelerated nursing programs. The deadline for both schools were in late may and the decision should have been made by July 1st the latest. While waiting, I was informed that the schools recieved more funding and the decision will take longer, around July 28th. As an alternative plan to nursing I applied for teaching position. I was hired as a 6th grade science teacher and am expected start orientation July 28! :rotfl:

Though I want to start the nursing program, I'm not as financially prepared for the program as I would like, especially considering that the accelerated programs do not encourage you to work. Teaching would give me the avenue to save for school. However, I wouldn't want to miss an opportunity if I'm accepted, considering that nursing school is very competitive. I have already taken all me pre-requsites, so should I decide to teach, all I would have to do is write the essays and apply for school. I would definitely appreciate your input. Thanx.

Why not look into the distance nursing programs like Deaconess College of nursing at http://www.deaconess.edu. You can get your ASN with them. Or the accelerated program at the University of Wisconsin at: http://www.uwosh.edu/colleges/con/accelerated.php

Although the second one doesn't suggest you work while in the program, maybe you could do both (teach and school)? Just a thought.

Also, there are many programs out there that are part time or have evening/ weekend programs. You might be surpised to find something that will allow you to do both, atleast for awhile.

I do aprreciate your inout. I didn't know about that deaconess college. I'm going to check it out today. I believe I'm going to teach for the year and take some refresher courses in the mean time and try again next year. Thanks for the advice though.

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

Distance learning seems like a good option. Can you teach part-time? If not, then you might have to make an intricate deicision between both

Specializes in CTICU.

You might want to call the schools you applied to and ask if accepted can you defer starting for a year. I'm not sure about nursing programs but many colleges in general allow this.

Distance learning in most states is not accepted for the LPN level, only for the RN...........and they require that you also have some type of experience in the medical field, such as respiratory therapist, paramedic, etc.

Once you have the LPN, there are bridge programs that exist on-line, but not for initial licensure.

No, you can get your LPN license with Deaconess as well. The entire program is two years long. After completion of the first year, you can sit for the Nclex-PN, and after the second year the Nclex-RN.

You don't have to have a medical background to get into the program at Deaconess. But to be honest, it will help you greatly if you do.

However, you are right that a person should check with their BON. I believe the same states that won't take Excelsior graduates, won't take Deaconess as well. Regardless, it's better to check with your BON to be certain before you waste a great deal of money attending the school.

Again, good luck to you.

Another thought: See if the nursing program has evening classes. You're going to be pulling your hair out but you can get everything you want accomplished!

Good luck! And, GOD BLESS YOU, cuz I would have to have MASSIVE XANAX if I had 17-25 6th graders around me 5 days a week.:rotfl:
