Dealing with Uncaring Professors

Nurses General Nursing

I am in the Generic BSN program which is 5 semesters. I did very well in 1'st semester because of caring professors. But this past semester I didn't... because of uncaring people. I need to know if anyone has had any 'run-ins' with professors, and if so... how did you manage it? I feel like I'm in a position that is IMPOSSIBLE to win.

As for uncaring I mean giving us 'blueprints' before an exam and telling us to study "abc" and our exam was over "xyz". Yes our entire class spoke up and I even wrote a letter which reached the dean. She said she would 'handle it' and I now stand in the hands of the Student Affairs Committee to get reinstated since I made 2 grades of 71. (Passing for them is 75)

They would post Peanuts comics often- and one great one the week before finals ---of all times---which read Linus and the girl with dark hair playing tennis: "Awe you can't blame everything on the racquet" "Did you ever consider it may be the man BEHIND the racquet?" "Stop thinking of so many excuses!" Linus responded... "I still think it's the racquet." Subliminal messages which were for me to quit blaming them. Believe me they did not teach anything. Whatever info I got this semester it was because of ME not them... I proved them wrong in their offices twice by the book; because they didn't go by it. After a while I just gave up and accepted the BS grade they 'claimed I earned'. I wish you could see these tests because I laughed at the 'correct answers'.:uhoh3:

Could you give us more details so we can understand what you mean by uncaring professors? It's great if they do care - but not necessary for your success. Do you mean that they did some sort of active undermining of your success?

You will not always get along with people in every aspect of your life. Yes I had some bad instructors and some mean ones. I just tried to make it through their classes. Use this professor who was uncaring as your "burnt out" model, when you reach any of that professors uncaring behaviors then you need to move on to a new position.

Either the instructor has a personal committment to your achievement or not. I have had both. It's more pleasant if he/she care, but not necessary for success. Keep your eye on the prize!

I had an A&P II instructor that was absolutely HORRIBLE!!!!!!! She would spend the large majority of class and lab time (she taught our lab, too:o ) talking about pathologies and lab tests...hardly ANY A&P. We tried to get her to focus, but when we approached her (yes, we..the entire freakin' class) were quickly struck down because worked for well, a MAJOR govermental healthcare agency, because she had all these years of experience and she KNEW what she was talking about. She even told us that she would make it her personal mission to be sure that, if we missed the questions about blood type matching on that exam, we would never be allowed to hang blood in this state. Funny thing...she never lectured on the subject and ran through about 7 minutes in lab.

I learned to show up for class, tune her out, study as hard and as best as I could, hope for the best and realize that I wouldn't have her class EVER again.

Some seem like they just get in the routine of "Get 'em in, teach them not to hurt anyone, get 'em out." Ideally, all of our profs would be understanding that behind the grade is a person with feelings and aspirations to do great things. Don't take it personally.

" I did very well in 1'st semester because of caring professors. But this past semester I didn't... because of uncaring people. "

why do you tell yourself such non truths -- you did well because YOU did well and you didnt do well because YOU didnt do well.

This giving away of your educational achievements and sense of self is surely not healthy and in the face of stress your blaming others as well.

Of course I do agree that there are professors who are not what we want them to be and the answer to that is ....SO WHAT ???

Live through it and push on. We are not part of this big brother/sisterhood where all are obliged to be nice and hold hands in support of each other.

Reclaim your power as a student and as a person and acknowledge your sense of self and accomplishment. Do not let anyone take that from you no matter "how nice they are" or how not nice they are. It is only then that you will be able to look at your stuggles head on recongize what is you and what is the others part.

Face these demons head on and your ego will be able to support you so that you will not sucumb your achivements or failures to others.

Did you diagloge with this person ? Did you ask how you can master the skills they want you to have to be a good health care provider?

I honestly do not mean to sound rough but what is the evidence of your success--- only you stuggling and overcoming the situations that life puts us in that are often not nice ....

You have got yourself this far and you and you alone will graduate as the nurse you should be with or without others flawed personalities.

I wish you the best and remember without a vision a person will perish do not let anyone stop you from looking at that vision

In what way were they "uncaring".?

I am going into my 4th of 5 semesters.... I have run into a few professors who I felt were just setting us out to fail. They were very intimidating... until I went to talk to them and share my feelings. Maybe you should consider meeting with them and discussing ways you can improve your study habits. It isn't that they don't care.... I feel a lot of times, they just come off on the wrong foot. DON'T GIVE UP!!! IT WILL GET BETTER!

I think you may have been used to being babied in your education...and thats why you have a problem with "uncaring professors." never use the professor as a crutch. You succeeded because of you...and you failed because of you. Take responsibility for your own actions. Professors can be rude, inconsiderate, etc...live and learn.

Good luck in your other classes :)
