How are you darkening your room to sleep during the day? I found some blackout drapes at JCPenny.com but it'll be around $155 for the drapes and valance.
I'll spend it, but i'd rather find a better deal! :rotfl: I put curtains up in my room, and they are WOEFULLY inadequate. Short of painting my window black (just kiddin! :chuckle ) any suggestions??

Where do you get that? I had foil going on but the HOA got onto me. :rotfl: lol
I was going to say the same thing, I got black out fabric at Joann's (any fabric store probably has it) its on the big rolls with the upholstery fabric. I don't think it was even $5 a yard. We originally got it because we have west facing windows in our apartment and mini blinds that don't seem to block much light or heat. We can't have anything other than the blinds showing from the outside (apartment rules) so I took my cheapo Target curtains and sewed the black out fabric to them, easy for even a non-sewer. My bedroom is like a cave now! I love it, and the cheapo curtains look like nice/expensive lined curtains. Well, if you don't look too closely!
I found some black thick material at Walmart and went in with my window measurements and nailed it tautly over the window then taped over the edges to keep out even the smallest light and since I live in Fla it also keeps it cool (avg daytime temp 95 degrees ). Definitely recommend earplugs, it's the phone calls and grass cutting and cars honking that keep me up......
Good luck....and sleep well
Too bad you don't live here in south alabama or the florida panhandle. You could just put plywood on the outside of your windows and nobody would think it looked strange at all. Half of the houses around here still have the boards up from Hurricane Dennis.
Seriously though, my dad bought a cheap sheet of white wall paneling and cut it to fit the inside of his windows with the white part facing out. THey block the sun out totally, but it doesn't look as bad as just wood or tin foil. He also bought an A/C window unit for the bedrrom window, so he wouldn't have to run the central unit all day with just him there asleep. It kept his room as cold as he likes it to sleep, the noise of the humming A/C blocked out the neighbors dogs, AND it cut his power bill in half since he wasn't cooling the entire house to 68 degrees during the hot, humid Alabama summer.
I bought some midnight velvet curtains for the Great Indoors. They cost 40.00 a panel but it works. I also have heard from my brother, who also works night shift, that the ear plugs work and a sound machine. I also my warp engine fan too. That blocks out any sound and keeps it cool. My bedroom is on my 2nd floor, so it gets hot. I have a refinished basement, so in the summer months I go down and sleep in the recliner or recently the camp blow up mattress. This past couple of weeks have been up in the 100's with heat index. Good Luck! :)
I have miniblinds, floor length drapes and a sleeping bag over my bedroom windows. Everyone but me stays awake during the day and sleeps at night so I have a fan at all times to cover some of the noise. My S.O. covered his bedroom windows with black plastic garbage bags and he sleeps like a baby now. My aunt Carol has tried it all, she ended up with a set of dark drapes. I have been planning on buying some fabric and making some new curtains or drapes but who has the time with all of these 16 hour doubles. This past month I was off July 4th, I went and saw War of the Worlds loved it slept through the fireworks, and didn't have another day off until July 23rd. It is partially my fault for allowing myself to be on call 24 hours a day but the floor has to be covered. I am either going to burn out in a tremendous meltdown or be a darn good nurse. Hoping for the latter.

Window tint for your car windows works well in the bedroom too, but after working eight years on nights, no sunlight is too bright when I'm exhausted. Most of the time I'm falling asleep before I even hit the pillow.
