Dallas questions?

I think in a new city or maybe it is listed with the state education department, you can get a ranking of the schools in the area you are looking at.

Will you be within the city limits, or in one of the burbs.?

I'd call the State of Texas Education Department or call the Dallas Independent School District and explain what I was looking for...school rankings...and inquire how to obtain it.

I am sure it is online.

Most people find the school district they want. Then look for jobs-housing. As large as the Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington metro area is,

(hundred miles square at least, and millions of people) I'd look at school rankings 1st. I assume your spouse has a job there and you are relocating. So, look at the rankings in the area-zip code- where spouses' job is located.

In an area that large, there will be more than one school district with high rankings.

The Dallas metro area is known for first rate education, with some districts better than others, natch.

General rule of thumb is not to live south of the Trinity River. Any specific questions about certain communities and such ask and I shall give you the low down.

I would go for the mid-cities area.... depending on where your employment is.. Euless, Bedford, Grapevine

i have friend working and living in lewisville (?) north of the cities ....she says it is really nice. has a gorgeous HOUSE, that much I know.

Plano is a burb of dallas.

Expect a wide and flat countryside.

And hot summers. But you will LOVE the winters , compared to Chicago.

Dallas is the "most cultured" off all Texas Cities. Culture as in intellectual culture/ museums and art, drama, first rate university, symphony, ballet, stylish people, stylish dressers, and sophistication, etc.

Dallasites look down their noses at Houstonians, (as they well should.) And, if they moved to Dallas from Houston, they'd never admit it.

Austin is hip/laid back/ still wants to be in the 60's and 70's.

You will LOVE Texas.

Dash on over to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM.... as soon as you can, and maybe say howdy to Russell. Gorgeous country and cities in Northern part of NM.

Plano is one cool town....are you upper middle class?

Flower Mound is/was just a wide place in the road. In the past 5 years it is growing, new highways and subdivisions sprouted all over...Yankees moving down and land prices out the kazoo !!

Ask Tom about the cities, for specifics.....

I for one, could not leave Texas fast enough. hated the weather. good people, tho. And I am like the OP, I am from Chicago. Best wishes, wherever you wind up.

Lantana- never heard of it

Plano- great schools, good shopping, low crime rate

Flower Mound- similar to Plano but farther west

Allen- also similar to Plano but a newer area, houses less expensive

Frisco- also similar to Plano and Allen, big shopping area and new homes

There really isn't much difference between Plano, Allen and Frisco. They are all border each other and have good schools. Allen and Frisco can be a long commute if you are working in Dallas itself.

I think you would be happy in Plano, Allen, Frisco or Flower Mound. It just depends on what location is best for you.

Definitely avoid areas south of Dallas and some mid-cities areas (between Dallas & Ft Worth) have a lot of crime.

Thanks, the last breakdown of cities was especially helpful. I sent away for a bunch of info and hope to look through all the literature as it comes in. Can I throw in some other cities for a breakdown on....

deb, i couldn't agree with you more. we lived in san antonio for two years, and when i left texas i made a vow never to return, and i have a middle daughter living in houston.:chuckle

the state is hot, hotter, and hottest........muggy, muggier, and muggiest! the state was very tough on my many seasonal allergies. i never could stop taking my allergy pills.

also, san antonio alone is known to have over 22,000 first, second, and third generation gangs. dallas also has their share of trouble. texas is a huge azz state and has waaaayyyyy too many issues for my taste.

Southlake- a really nice town, great schools, good shopping, traffic is ugly during rush-hour, extremely expensive!!
