Cursing A Good Samaritan???

I seem to be a poo-poo magnet some days, and this past Friday was no exception. I was in noon traffic running an errand, and noted there was a wreck on the other side of the median. 3 vehicles involved, good bit of damage, but there were already 2 police cars, 2 fire/rescue trucks, and 3 ambulances on the scene. I did not stop, because it was apparent that I wasn't needed.

Within 100 yards, of course there was another wreck, a car of rubber-neckers gawking while they were driving. At this scene, 1 fire truck and 1 police motorcycle. The officer was talking to one of the firemen, and the victim was moving, but sitting up. I decided that I would stop, I never like to just pass by, even if all I can do if hold an umbrella over a victim while the EMT does his thing.

So, anyway, I top, pull over out of the way of traffic, and get out of the car. I had taken about 2 or 3 steps and the motoycle cop starts to yell and scream obscentities. When he first saw me, he yelled for me to stop and already had his hand on his FRIGGIN gun! When I got out his first words were "Who are you!What the ______ are you doing?!!! He yelled it 3 or 4 times. Now when he started hollering, I had just started trying to id myself as an ER RN. I quickly tried to explain that I was offering help. I even had my work t shirt on that says big as Dallas ____ _____ emergency Room. So then i have frozen, because he acted like I was about to get a body part shot off or something. So then he commences cursing me again, stating, "the only thing you can do is get the f________ out of here. If I wanted your f____ help, I would have f____ asked for it.!!" "So get the h___ out of here before I get nasty!" GET NASTY??!!! He got nasty about the time I exited my vehicle.

I'm just very glad we don't live in the city where they patrol! Who knows, maybe I was just hormonal. Maybe just me, but I think he could have gotten th point across with only 1 or 2 f_____ and a few h____! Anne

Neither should anyone else have to live in that city. I believe a word to the personnel dept and the chief would be prudent. They'll know who you are talking about.

You are so right! It took me a little while to calm down after it happened, but within 1 hour of the occurrence, I was on the phone with the shift supervisor, who happens to be married to an ER nurse. My ex husband was a motorcycle patrol officer with the same force until last year when h was in a wreck, so the sup was very nice, and you hit the nail on the head, he said he knew who it was and it would be dealt with "appropriately"..I'll not hold my breath, but my next bit of typing is a letter to the editor! Or is that wrong?

Wow-What a mean person. Sorry you had to deal with that Anne. And i agree that you should report this--chances are the PP is right and they'll have received complaints about that person already.

Not a thing wrong with writing a letter to the editor. Sometimes that can be more effective than talking to a supe....not saying this supe won't do something about it, but a little bit of public humiliation can go a long way.

Hey! That's kind of what I was thinking, too. And to top it all off, I had gotten the result of my 24 hr. holter monitor and was en route to the MD's office! Par for the course for me. I ended up that night in the ER doing funky things on the monitor!! Stress!

The cop was on a huge power trip. I am glad you called and followed up with his superior. This should be dealt withas the guy is a walking time bomb. It was nice of you to stop. The world would be a better place if everyone was so willing to help someone in need.

I would forego public humiliation and just file a c/o with the department, as you already have. Stress? Even making a c/o is risky and payback is hell.

You should have said "Fine, Officer. I'll move along. But, before I do, why don't you comply with the law and tell me your name and badge number so I can report your appalling behavior to Internal Affairs?"

A few cops think they are God's gift and can get away with anything. Show this particular azzhat that such thinking is dead wrong.

If his mental illness causes him to CURSE at people and throw temper tantrums, I don't think he should be working like this with the public. Police officers, like healthcare professionals, should be able to remain calm in stressful situations.

And as for stress... Like healthcare professionals, we also have stress in our lives, but we're not supposed to take it out on our patients or their families.... Why should he be able to?

Correct, Megan. There is never an excuse for treating the public like this. I don't care if he had just found out that his best friend died, he was in uniform and on the job. To be upset is understandable. To take it out on the public is not.
