CSUSM ABSN Fall 2019

Published

Hi everyone! I've been following a lot of the previous threads for CSUSM's ABSN program. I'm finally ready to apply for the Fall 2019 semester, so I figured I should start this thread and talk to the rest of you who are in the same boat! :) I currently just have to take the TEAS, which I'm signed up to take next week! Has anyone already submitted their apps yet?

Also keep in mind if you have very good points you can still be admitted right up to the start of term. As people change their minds or withdraw for various reasons they’ll fill their spots with applicants with the highest points. So, I applied for Fall but I’m hoping I can squeeze into the summer cohort. They still haven’t done a points evaluation though for me so we’ll see.

I'm sure this question came up already and was answered but : Can I still apply to this program with one pre-req still in process? Will that significantly affect my admission status ?

To piggy back on the others’ answers, you can definitely apply if you have pre-reqs in progress but you do need your TEAS score in order to submit an application (it is one of the quadrants that needs to be filled out). I attended an information session and if you have classes in progress, just fill out “In-Progress” on your application.

For example, I had two pre-reqs (physiology and microbiology) in progress but completed my TEAS test. I applied for the Fall 2019 semester (although I am hoping to get into the summer cohort) and sent in my application on December 6, 2018. However, because my pre-reqs were still in progress and final transcripts were not received until January 16, 2019, I was not given an evaluation until after the first and second wave of acceptances for the summer 2019 cohort. Although I believe I have enough points to get in (44 points), I may be pushed back to Fall 2019 because the cohort may have been filled already. So, because you have pre-reqs in progress it may affect your chances to get into the following cohort because your school may send transcripts late (as my school did). However, there is hope because I’ve seen in previous threads that the university admits students up until the start date of the cohort (some students may drop, etc.).

I also saw in a previous thread that there may be a waitlist of people who deferred their acceptances into a certain cohort. For example, if someone was accepted into fall, but wanted to get into spring, they may be further up the list for spring cohort acceptances. Again, I am not entirely sure if this is the case; I am just reporting back what I’ve seen on previous cohort threads. Good luck to you!

Does anyone know if San Marcos calculates +/- for cumulative GPA?

does anyone know if we get assigned a specific advisor during this application period? I think I remember reading on past threads that we do so that we can ask questions and whatnot...?

Yes you will be assigned an advisor in the Extended Learning office.

Hi everyone, I received my evaluation on Friday and have 33 points. Not as high as I thought so I'm a little disappointed, but I'm not losing hope yet! haha. Just as a rough timeline for those that are still waiting- I received my score about 5 weeks after I submitted my application.

Definitely don't lose hope! They have the average posted for the most recent cohort now and it was ~32.5 I think. I'm still waiting on my eval... marked complete on 1/28 so hopefully soon...

@WAboundSN Thank you for all the insights you've shared with us on this thread! I would love to ask you a few questions about your experience as an EMT and any advice you may have for someone wanting to pursue a similar path while in nursing school. Would you mind if I send you a PM with a few questions?

Sure.

Hi everyone!

I applied to the Fall cohort too and received my evaluation recently. Does anyone know if the Temecula campus is a commuter school? Or do students live together somewhere close to campus? Is there student housing?

I'm trying to learn more about the school, but I don't know if I'm going to get in or not haha

The Temecula campus is very small campus and is home to only the nursing program and the kinesiology program through the extended learning office. It's one building and two portable classrooms that shares grounds with a continuation high school. The main building has a small front desk area, a handful of staff offices, one large lecture room, one smaller lecture room, three skills labs, a simulation lab, a chemistry lab, a kinesiology classroom, and a small "lounge" that doubles as a studying and eating place for students.

So yes, it's a commuter school, as the main CSUSM campus is as well. There is no student housing at the Temecula campus. Each cohort has 60 students, if I had to take a wild guess at where people live, I'd say:
- 50% in San Diego County
- 30% in Riverside County with probably 20% in the Temecula area
- 15% in Orange County
- 5% LA/San Bernardino County

Some people in my cohort do room together in the Temecula area, there are usually a handful of people in each cohort willing to do that.

Having been to both the Temecula and San Marcos campuses, the only real difference is location and some of the amenities on the main campus, such as food and a library. The quality of the classroom, labs, etc., are both the same. Temecula has easy parking right next to the school and no parking pass is required, whereas San Marcos campus the parking passes are several hundred dollars, you fight for parking with all the other CSUSM students, and have to walk quite a distance to the nursing building. The San Marcos campus does have the library though and on campus food options, which we don't have in Temecula.

Hope that helps.

@WAboundSN Yes that helps a lot, thank you!
