CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

Published

How many here has applied for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at CSULA?

I know it is a little bit early to talk about this, but I just submitted all of my grades, TEAS scores (ATI sends them to CSULA SON for you), and notification of health care work experience (dental assistant) from an employer.

It has been a long and anxious wait till April/May for letters of acceptance to come in, so I hope this thread can help everyone who is dealing with the same anxiety and stress that we are all dealing with.

So If anyone would like to share their overall "points" score, or questions regarding pre-reqs TEAS etc. I would be alright to share all of you mine, and answer some questions that I might know.

Thanks and godspeed everyone!

@BeachBedHead - if you consider a 15-mile drive from Citrus College to PCC "down the street" then CSULA is in my back yard! LOL... I was told that the kind of statistics class required by CSULA's SON is not the typical statistics course offered by most schools. The website, assist.org, also seems to concur, as there are no equivalent courses with "inferential statistics" being offered at ANY community college in the greater Los Angeles area. That includes, Citrus College (I already checked).

Ideally I would like to get Statistics out of the way before embarking on the real nursing courses (meaning take it this summer if possible). But my mind simply can't stomach forking over $1000 for a pre-requiste course that can easily be taken for a tenth of the cost at a community college. I need answers! If I have to take this class at CSULA, then I have no choice. But if I can transfer this course, then I need to know which school offers it.

Lol...I liver super close to CSULA too...closer than PCC!

Hm...I'm actually not sure about that. I took stats 50 at PCC and from what I seem to recall...I think they do accept it. On assist.org they said PCC's microbiology was not equivalent...but my friend and I took it at PCC and the CSULA accepted it. Guess we'll just find out at the orientation if we need to take other upper division classes...

Does anyone from CSULA know when are we supposed to take Statistics and can this class be transfered from a Community College? The people at the advisement office are not returning my calls on this question. Is Statistics considered an upper division course?

since it is a 400 level course (HS 400), it is less likely that there is a transferable course for Stats.

Don't worry about that, that course, along with 2 other courses that will fulfill the nursing GE upper and lower division requirements (i'm not talking about the program courses that are blocked-sectioned for us), will be explained in FULL detail during orientation

just relax during the summer, we finished all pre reqs to get in!

see you then!

There are predators, pie-in-the-sky panderers, and outright liars wanting to coax you into attending their school. For those of you who are considering enrollment into a for-profit school such as West Coast University, please read this article: http://www.npr.org/2011/05/12/136238528/for-profit-colleges-targeting-people-who-cant-pay

These for-profit schools are corporate interests who don't give a rat's tail about you or your college education, but want your body in their classroom just so they can milk precious tax-payer dollars for themselves and still put you on the hook for thousands of dollars in loans that you can never erase from your record until repaid. Even if you get a degree and a job by attending these schools, you will have contributed to their greed for money while at the same time put yourself in the hole many times over for the "privilege" of getting a substandard education.

If it's true what you said, then I'm kicking myself for not taking Micro at PCC last semester. I know that PCC only offers a 4-unit Micro, so I drove all the way down to El Camino College to take their 5-unit Micro, which according to assist.org was an equivalent course to CSULA's. Believe it or not, that was the only school besides Santa Monica College in the greater Los Angeles area offering that course in the Fall. All other schools offered it in the Spring (except, of course, for PCC which doesn't offer it at all.)

Looking back at it now, I could have taken Microbiology at Pierce College this Spring because CSULA does not count Microbiology as a condition of acceptance to the SON. CSULA allows you to do Micro "in-progress" until June. Candidates could be accepted to the SON in May and then get rejected in June because they did not meet the Microbiology requirement. I'll never understand this system, but that's the way it is here.

Actually, they offer micro at ELAC too. On assist, it shows it is equivalent to csula's micro. Don't know if that would be closer for you vs. el camino but it is but me. But yeah...I took it at PCC last spring and submitted my transcript with the grade so they know my micro class is not "in progress". And since I got admitted...must mean it was accepted :D

(I just finished writing a long and detailed post but, for some reason the website didn't let me post it. So here are the highlights if you have any specific questions pm me.)

1) CSULA does accept most community college statistics classes even if they are not equivalent through assist.org. All you need to do is file a small petition with your adviser. (the process should be explained during orientation).

2) Stop worrying so much about statistics since you don't need it till your second year and it is incredibly easy.

3) CSULA SON encourages people to take an upper division inferential statistics course because it is a requirement for all MSN/DNP programs.

4) @ khrazy5150: I am not a “pie-in-the-sky panderer,” I'm just letting people know about what others have done in the past. The rest of your argument is completely valid.

5) @yjshin328: Are you trying to insinuate that CSU students aren't as smart as “those smart people in UCLA.” Please ask me about this later because I would love to clarify some common misconceptions about the CSU and UC system.

6)If any of you want a quick laugh, take a look at this video about CSULA (just remember it was intended to be a satire):

I wonder why it didn't post?!

Hmm I had a question but completely forgot, maybe I will remember it later!

I thought all micro classes transfer? Mine is a 5 unit, maybe thats why I am safe. IF you guys took at non transferable micro or a 4 unit micro, petition like icy said. I think I will do that with statistics too!

Um I remember my question...but its to everyone!

For the transfer students....what critical thinking "english" did you take? I took the needed english 101 (composition) and for the "second" english, english 103 (critical thinking) but it seems that CSULA doesn't take the english 103, it wants 104 (classical rhetorical essay??? what the heck?) and I am not good at english what so ever. I hate writing and got my english/critical thining out of the way first for that reason...

I am wondering if I could petition 103 in place of 104 because seriously, 103 is the engish "critical thinking" course and should statisfy the big 4 when transfering (english, speech, math, critical thinking)

ps I AM NOT taking about the SON critical thinking req, for that I am taking philosophy logic to statisfy that.

I know for those of you who go to PCC and other CC's that the course numbers aren't the same but the course name is in "()"

thanks for anyone who knows!

@icykool - I did never said that YOU were the pie-in-the-sky panderer, I was just posting a warning to all those who are considering attending a for-profit school. You've seen the ads on TV and the internet about these schools ("get your BSN in 3 years", etc.) Those ads are designed to suck people's $$$ not to to educate them.

I don't trust a lot of those schools and trade schools out there.

Most are horrible and don't produce decent nurses

Good warning!

BeachBedHead..you confused me.

I am a transfer student from El Camino College.

I thought English (critical thinking) would satisfy SON requirment for a critical thinking course? I will have to call and confirm now with SON on monday.

Is there anyone from El Camino who can confirm this as well?

I got the information form the online information for applicants. It states Critical thinking can be statisfied by PHIL160 PHIL250 POLS155 COMM176 or CSULA ASSIST listed GE A3.

Just to clarify,

I listed English 1C (Critical Thinking) on my SON application under Critical thinking prerequisites. They must have accepted it or overlooked it. As I was admitted for Fall.

Did any one else list English as a general education critical thinking course?

Can anyone clarify? I'm a bit confused as to whether English critical thinking satisfied both critical thinking requirments for admission to the university and for admission to SON.

If not. I guess I'll find out on Monday.
