    Transitioning from Adults to Neonates

So... I'm a nurse with 2.5 years of med surg oncology experience transitioning to a level 3 (feels more like level 4) NICU. So all I've ever known was ADULTS. I just finished week 1 out of 12 of my orientation and I'm already feeling defeated. Please share with me when did you guys start feeling competent and any tips and tricks you have for someone with ZERO experience with babies and critical care. Let me share with you guys how my first week went.. Day 1 the charge nurse already embarrassed me. My preceptor stepped away as I watched the charge nurse start our baby's IV. She asked me for a "chevron" .... I'm sorry what did you ask for? I asked... "A chevron" she repeats irritatedly. I'm sorry I don't know what that is, I said. "Are you a new grad? Where did you come from?" I was furious as you can imagine! But as the new kid on the block how can you bark back to someone especially your charge?!? (it's not in my character to tell or put another person down one way or another anyways) Thankfully my preceptor popped back in and handed her what she needed. Which might I add... she was asking for tape to anchor the IV down. Noted. Day 2 I'm paired with a different preceptor. We had a 1:2 assignment, which I've heard isn't the best for teaching or learning the first few weeks. We started with 1 baby but even so... this baby had a UV line, was on a ventilator, and had just pulled out his oral gastric tube and his peripheral IV at the beginning of the shift! Poor little guy was NPO cuz he's so sick... And didn't stop crying which caused him to desat. I never left this poor kid's side cuz his monitors kept beeping and the RTs would run in there. I don't even know to do, what to say, what to ask! Not sure if my preceptor thought I was stupid or what... But throughout the day she would say things like "you came from med surg right? So you don't know anything about vents.." yes you are right I don't but I'm here to learn everything and anything you have to teach me ! "Do you regret coming to NICU? If you wanted to... could you still go back to your old job?" Of course I'm questioning if I made the right decision when I leave a place I've already established friendship and competency! Of course I could go back if I wanted to and it doesn't sound like a bad decision when it's day 2 and my own preceptor already seems to have given up on me! I ended up telling her what the charge nurse did to me the other day and started to get tearful, not my intention to cry but I wanted to tell her yeah your coworkers (and partially you) are really mean. I sat in my car balling my eyes out at the end of this day. Day 3 This day the best of the 3. I'm with the same preceptor as day 2. We get a 1:3 assignment as my preceptor requested for it... for me. She assigns me 1 baby to take care of all day. Thankfully this baby was the most temperamented! Didn't care if I had to reposition the leads on him or swaddle him and reswaddle him cuz I forgot the check his temperature or blood pressure. And my preceptor seemed to care about me.. turns out she had told my educator, who in turn told my manager what had happened on day 1 (wonder if she also told my educator this orientee is stupid too). Both the manager and educator talked to me.. really helped me feel better about everything. Really they did but now I'm concern when word makes it way around.. this charge nurse and her posse might retaliate and gang up on me in the future. (Hello...! You're forgetting I come with exp I know how the game goes with some nurses out there!) This is so so difficult.... I have some many friends and colleagues (from my old hospital) supporting me but it sucks SO MUCH to feel THIS incompetent all over again. It's so hard not to get defensive. I'm probably better off just saying I'm a new grad so there are no expectations. I've precepted and trained nurses before at my old hospital and I don't think I've ever made any nurse feel the way I've felt these past 3 days. I've stood up for my orientees and supported them. Whether they had experience or not I guided them through a smooth transition so they are confident to be on their own or at least feel comfortable to go to anyone, especially me, if they had questions. Sigh... maybe I'm asking for too much from my preceptor... Thanks for reading my rant.. share any horror stories you might have experience as a new NICU RN or exped NICU RN going to a different hospital and how you managed as well. Xoxo

    Rejected!!!

We must have applied to the same school... I also found out this morning I was rejected. What bums me out the most is like I'm an alumni of this school and did so much with and for the school during my BSN program. And yet they still reject me... yeah maybe it's not meant to be...

    Cedars-Sinai New Grad Residency - March 2015

Thank you bananafana for starting this thread! I, too, applied and did the one-way interest. Submitted it on Jan 10th. Interesting to see that bobcee received an email for the one-way interview on the 14th! I was hoping to get an update by this weekend but seems like they are still screening applicants? Will update you guys if I get anything. Good luck everyone!
  6. Hello all! I graduated in Sept 2014 with my BSN, have my RN license, and have applied to well over 100+ job postings throughout California. I understand jobs for new grad RNs are scarce in CA but I am still hopeful for all of us! I keep finding posts from other new grads, and even former new grads, saying to apply and work for LA County as "they are always hiring new grad" and "they like new grads". It doesn't seem like they're new grad programs so I am assuming listings are posted sporadically throughout the year. To my understanding there is (correct me if I'm wrong): Part one - a written test covering Nursing Process, Nursing Assessment Procedures, Care Management, Medicine, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Chemical Dependencies, Mental Health Concepts, Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies, Reduction of Risk, Physiological Alterations, and Basic Care and Comfort weighted 60%. Part Two - An interview covering training, experience and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 40%. Does this exam take place BEFORE or AFTER a facility hires you? How can I get this process started? Any information posted is GREATLY appreciated! Please shine some light on this so we all can learn. Thank you!

Cali. RN License Still Not Posted

UPDATE: I contacted the DCA directly, hoping for a solution. AND BAM... they told me same day I contact them, the BRN LOST my transcript and want me to re-sent a new one. !@#$ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At this rate with the holidays around the corner, I probably won't get my license until AFTER the new year. Gosh... I am so angry!!!

Cali. RN License Still Not Posted

I proposed I resend my transcript but was told not to as it might cause confusion... and told to wait 4 weeks before they can do anything. LO AND BEHOLD...! Today is week 4 and there is STILL NOTHING on breeze. Called the BRN all they said was your transcript is still not processed, let me put a note for your evaluator to recheck your file. We pretty much went in circles about the whole thing and went absolutely nowhere. Tell me if I passed, if I failed... GIVE ME MY LICENSE! My anxiety has turned into rage and frustration!!!

Cali. RN License Still Not Posted

Hello everyone, I'm from California so no quick results available. I graduated in June 2014 and this was my first time taking the exam. October 22: Took my NCLEX-RN and got the good pop-up 'Our records indicated you cannot register for another exam etc. etc.' 48 Hours Post-test: License not posted on breeze. I contacted the BRN only to have them say my transcripts were "being processed, please wait a few weeks". My school had sent my transcript to Sacramento with certified mail. I tracked it and it arrived on Sept. 16. 1 Week Post-test: BRN still said my transcripts are being processed. Need to keep waiting. 2 Weeks Post-test: Spoke with a women - she personally went to grab my file and told me they don't have my transcript failed but she believes she saw it recently and to keep checking on breeze the next few days to a week and I should see my license posted (I guess this was her way saying I passed for sure as well). 3 Weeks Post-test: TODAY... still NOTHING. Called this morning and was told to wait 4 weeks for my transcript to be processed. It has been 8 weeks since my school sent the transcript. That's plenty of time to input it. I am 99% sure the BRN lost my transcript... and at week 4 I have a feeling I will be requested to resend my transcript... Which means MORE TIME NEEDED FOR PROCESSING! I asked if I should resent my transcript now and they said no just allow up to 4 weeks for processing. I'm seeing posts of people who tested early in November have already received their license on breeze, so doesn't seem like there's a backlog or anything.... Any suggestions as to what I should do?!?!?!? Or if you anyone knows a direct number to someone who can help me - the reps from the 1-800 number isn't doing anything for me. Thank you in advance!

CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

You know... I'll be honest I never found out what my real score was. I just calculated it myself according to the point scale they provided to get an understanding of where I stood. I've been told that students can ask the school of nursing how many points they were awarded after they've been accepted or rejected. And... I am totally loving the program right now!! I just can't stress how much reading you have to HAVE TO read and studying but you'll meet really great people in the program who help and support you every step of the way :)

CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

There wasn't anything in my packet about classes but I found this on CSULA's SON site: http://www.calstatela.edu/academic/hhs/roadmaps/NURS/NURS_Freshmen_5Y.html and from the looks of it...the class lectures Lysander mentioned are the exact ones listed under Fall Quater for that layout. In our packets on page 4, #12 it says that clinics/labs e.g. Nurs 105 and Nurs 273 are going to be assigned to us on orientation.

CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

So...I haven't received any additional info. since my acceptance letter. Has anyone else received more info? I was informed by the SON that I would be receiving some packet of info during the summer about orientation, registering for classes, etc. but nothing yet... As far as I am aware of...July 14th is the deadline to submit final transcripts to CSULA admissions and SON and July 7th is orientation for all students of all major that is admitted to CSULA for Fall 2011. So is there going to be a separate orientation for Nursing students only or is July 7th IT? If there are additional deadlines // information I've missed, please let me know! Thanks :)

I see. Thanks for info. I really do hope for the best and hope this issue will be resolved soon. It would be really unfair since I have proof of the acceptance letter and letter of intent mailed to me with the May 10th letter head and post-marked date.
