Hi everyone!
I haven't seen any postings from CSUF EL-MSN Fall 2010 applicants! Are there any of you out there? I received my complete checklist about two weeks ago and was curious if anyone else has heard anything from the school?? Good luck to all of you!!!
I'm almost positive I'm going to CSUF, but I just want to make sure that I'm making the right choice. I don't want to look back and think, "Well, maybe LB would've been a better choice". As for Georgetown, the deposit is due tomorrow & I'm not about to write a check for $900! I feel that there's a time and place for everything, & I'm not ready to make a commitment like that yet. I can't leave the Cali weather yet!
As for you, I hope you get in!!! We still have 3 more months before we start so you'll be fine! From what I understand, more people will be choosing csulb over csuf so more spots will open up! Is csulb your first choice or is csuf?
Yeah for some reason I thought you would never pick CSULB over CSUF from what you said on the LB postings. However it really is a big choice, I wish I was in the same situation as you are. I got rejected from LB actually, I have a B in Micro and only an 87% on my TEAS, so I wasn't very competitive.
Yeah, a $900 deposit is pretty serious, I didn't know the deposits were that high! I just asked because I saw an earlier post that you were deciding between Georgetown and CSUF. It is tough to leave the weather here, I did my undergrad in Colorado and it was a HUGE change, but it was one of the best experiences of my life. I have friends now from all over the country that are family to me now, people I couldn't find in Southern California thats for sure. But like you said you aren't ready, but after high school for me, I was ready to get out!
Anyways, I was hoping to be in your situation and CSUF is my first choice mainly because it's my only shot for this Fall from either LB or Fullerton. I LOVE fullerton, love the staff they are truly amazing. The students I met were so comforting and sweet I just felt at home, but Long Beach would have been the better choice for me in the long run because I want to go for the NP. There are so many choices at LB that you can't get at Fullerton and if your going to go for the Master's why not set yourself up on the right path and get an easier way in to the advanced nursing. If you think about it, or at least in my own case all I have under my belt is around 240 hours of volunteer experience. I am getting my CNA over summer, but that's all I have so if I was to end up applying to an advanced nursing program they wouldn't take me with such little experience after graduation. Most programs take RN's that have at least 5 years experience, so that's why Long Beach is a better choice to hook up students like me in such an advanced program with little experience. It's three years so I completely understand why your taking your time, but like someone already said on here we should get the best bang for our buck as well as our time (3 years!!).
Good luck with your choice, I'm sure you worked VERY hard to get where you are, so congrats!!!
Coco.. Go to this link.. It is Fullerton's ADN-MSN track, if you haven't already seen it.
Go CSUF! It's newer which means more flexibility so we can probably help influence the development of the program. I'm rejectinig the CSULB bc of the anesthesia program at CSUF and just because it seems like I will enjoy the experience more. I'm not interested in NP or CNS so for me it's like I'll be making more sacrifices (extra cost first year, farther commute, TIME) going for something I don't care about.
KRomney-
I definitely think that you're a competitive applicant! If LB is where you eventually want to end up, consider taking a different class (for the non-science courses) that counts if you got a B. For example, for the stat class, you can turn in basically ANY statistics class. My friend got a B in biostats so then she took another stat class through the sociology dept and received an A so she used that A instead. I wasn't aware that you were allowed to do this, but it makes sense! Another thing, if you feel like you should have gotten in, FOLLOW up on it!!!!!!!!!! I got a rejection letter from LB & was confused (mind you, this is 3 weeks later after decisions were out), so I emailed ******. She then tells me that she "accidentally sent me the wrong letter"... So, basically, I just found out yesterday that she sent me the wrong letter. How you send someone the wrong letter is beyond me, but follow up on things!
The tuition at GTown is astronomical!!!! omg, it would cost me roughly ~$70,000/yr for tuition, living expenses, books, insurance, transportation, misc. However, I do believe that it would've been a great experience for me to move out & meet people over the east. During my interview, I met some amazing people that had the most interesting stories to share! The first thing I noticed was that there's a HUGE difference in terms of personality between the people in Southern Cali & the people over on the East Coast! Honestly, I fell in love with the area & the school, but I'm resistant to such a big change!! I'll apply there again for my final degree (whatever it may be!), but I'm not ready to move to a foreign area with no family, no car, no friends, absolutely no familiarity with the area, and $70,000/yr cost! Weren't you scared??! I really commend you for being able to just pack your bags and leave for a few years!
I completely understand why LB is better for you in the long run, but be careful! My sister's friend (graduating from the EL-MSN) program this year is having a difficult time finding a job bc she doesn't have any experience. No experience = no job. I think you would have to work as an RN and just work your way up? Just something to consider. Sorry this is so long!!
Meems! I cannot believe they sent you the wrong letter!! Good thing you followed up. I followed up myself and she said my points were too low. It was a tough cohort to get into there were really high scoring candidates. I am planning on taking a few other courses to raise my GPA just in case I need to apply again for next year, just like you said your friend did.
Wow, that is a very high tuition fee! Haha I can see why that was a huge deterrent!! Yeah don't get me wrong there are some great people in Southern California, I had just been raised in the same house for 18 years growing up with the same people and I wanted some diversity. I wanted to learn more about different places and different people, because after I visited I also fell completely in love because it was so beautiful and the people were SO sweet! So I packed everything up, had my mom cry the whole trip there, but I made it out in four years and I miss it soooo much! Georgetown is a great school, I think your making the right choice and when your ready definitely take the risk at least for a little bit :)
Yeah, I don't know as much about LB as I do Fullerton and at this point Fullerton is my only shot at the Master's portion. I have applied to 3 other ABSN's that I am waiting to hear back from, I just think Fullerton is the best choice out of all of them.
If you don't mind me asking how much experience do you have? Do you have your CNA? I am getting mine this summer, and if I get into Fullerton (I hope!!!!) then i'll work after passing the NCLEX.
Have a great weekend! Congrats Meems and Gashin you have a great three/four years ahead of you!!!
Whybrat - I actually talked to Long Beach, those were the people that told me my points were too low, not Fullerton. I haven't talked to Fullerton at all, but trust me there are times when I feel like there's no hope and then there are some days that I feel like I still have a chance! It's just been SO long, we found out April 8th! This is torture haha!
I haven't thrown in the towel though, I still check my e-mail like a crazy person, even my spam folder just in case it ended up in there! There was a previous year that a girl called Fullerton and they said we took everyone from the waitlist last year and do not expect to do that this year and I was curious how she got that information (that was for Fall 2008).
Anyways, I'm hanging in there and I'm glad you are too!
Hello Everyone,
Thanks for all the information about Fullerton and CSLB. I am considering both for the RN to MSN. I will get my RN from RCC since it is a good education and very inexpensive. Then I believe it is best to get some experience before continuing on to the Masters.
When you say it is about 3 years, is that full-time or part-time. Are you talking about the Entry Level accelerated program?
Does anyone out there have concerns about not finishing the Masters work to the Nurse Practioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist and having to get the DPN by 2015. I actually called the nursing coordinator over at Long Beach and she said something to the effect that you would be okay if you were in the program in 2015. The idea about grandfathering is still unclear whether you will be able to keep your job if you are working as an NP or if you can still apply for the license as a NP. The person at Long Beach told me to call someone at the Board of Nursing. I was surprised to hear that she would actually pick up the phone. Well, as expected, she didn't. I left a message last week. If I hear from her I will give everyone the information. I hope I can get the NP with a Masters if I don't make the 2015 deadline.
Talk to you later.

Meems509, what made you consider CSULB again? What happened to Georgetown as well? I thought you were a shoe-in for CSUF. Congrats for getting into so many schools!! I agree with you though, after the interview and talking to students at CSUF during the interview as well I got a really good feel for CSUF! Good luck with your choice!
