Hi there! I'm writing the CRNE tomorrow and wanted to start this thread to get some chatter going to support each other. Anyone else writing tomorrow?
I'm nervous....somewhat! It's kind of a strange feeling actually. If I really let myself think about it, it frightens me to death, but then other times I'm completely calm. KWIM?? Anyone else going through these mix of emotions?
Anyway, I have to go get ready since I have to drive an hour and half out of town to write, and we're actually spending the night tonight.

This question is for janfrn, you seem like a seosoned user (I have seen your your name in older forums) have you noticed that those that fail the exam get their results earlier?

Cheeca, this does not need to be your last attempt. I was looking around I found that you can take a competence test with the college (at your own expense) and by doing that they can assess your competence level and help you pass the exam (you have up to two chances once this test is completed) . I will find the website for you afterwards or you could simply call the college of nurses and they can assist you further.

Hi Jhaydenj, Maybe I am wrong and you are correct but what I think what you are referring to, is the SEC (substantially equivalent competence assessment) which is free as I understand. Its an assessment by your local college they assess your skills and competences and find what areas you are weak in and indentify whether you are able to meet the competenceies expected of a RN. It also see's if there is a need for additional preperation and what competency requirements need to be addressed. Is this the kind of thing you are referring to? If not and there is some other assessment that I am not even aware of then I would love to know, maybe you can send me the link for the website. As far as I am aware, and this is directly from CARNA you are only allowed to take the CRNE exam 3 times. As any one else heard of this assessemnt that Jhaydenj mentions? Maybe janfrn could enlighten me on this one?

You know I really feel that i'll get the same fate , I keep dreeming with failing and passing .Hopfully , I 'll have mine on Monday , I'm from Mississauga. Let's keep our hands crossed for all Junes takers.

Yes you can take the LPN....I am already onto this and been in touch with the appropriate college of LPN. You have to have a prioe and learning assessment done by a local college, and take a challenge exam then have a skills assessment, then then tailor a course for you depending on your assessement. Once you have completed your modules you then get your credentials for Licensed practice murse and deemed eligable to take the LPN exam and get a temp licence to work as a LPN under the condition that you sit the exam and pass within 1 year. As for the expense, I would tink they would charge because the college charges for everything and they would be going out of their way to ensure that they YOU pass and I highly doubt they would go out of their way for free. But, the best way to know is call and ask. I know that their is a solution, so you do not have to be discouraged. By the way, what province are you in? In the past, did you normally get your exam earlier than those that passed?

Seasoned user? Yeah, you could say that. I've been a staff member for three years, reading through hundreds of "did you get your results yet?" posts after each sitting of the CRNE. To answer your question, I'd have to say no, the results are batch-mailed from the CNA to the provincial colleges who then batch mail them. It's likely a coincidence. Another possibility is that there's a preponderance of members who have reason to fear they've failed who post here looking for kindred spirits. Many of the posters to these types of threads are IENs, who legitimately have reason to fear failure.

There are only three chances to pass the CRNE, as cheeca has said. (There are also only three chances to pass the CLPNE.) The SEC is usually required long before permission to write the CRNE for the first time has been granted. There's a sticky on the International forum home page on the subject of SEC (FAQ - Substantially Equivalent Competence (SEC) Assessments ). Its purpose is more to ensure that the applicant is competent to practice nursing as it's practiced in Canada than it is it help pass the exam.

There is no direct cost to the applicant for the SEC. It is not actually provided by the College of Nursing, but through Mount Royal College/Grant McEwan College in Alberta, Kwantlen College in BC, Health Sciences Centre in Manitoba and Palliser College (I think) in Saskatchewan. The cost of the assessment is picked up by the College of Nursing, which explains the huge increase in our registration fees here in Alberta this year. However, there is a significant cost to the applicant when they enroll for any upgrading the SEC may reveal they need.
Cheeca is in Alberta, I'm pretty sure. Calgary? Anyway, for the present time the only position vacancies in this province are open only to internal candidates, meaning people already employed by Alberta Health Services. It doesn't look like that is going to change any time soon, either, despite what the CEO might say publicly.

The exam is national exam so study material recommended by the college you have applied to will be more than sufficient. Much has already been written on what to study
Thank-you so much this was very,very helpful to me !!!! I would like to know if anyone can tell me about the study guides. I've been practicing nursing in the u.s. for six years. I a'm out of the study loop. I will also be working on learning the metric system for the lab values! So far so good. I loooooove Canada !
