Cried (I mean BAWLED) all the way home from Memphis

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

:crying2: :crying2: I just got home from taking the NCLEX-PN. I did so badly it shut off at 85 questions. I am so very discouraged. I studied and studied for this thing and I worked my tail off in school. I worked my NCLEX review book and CD. I studied my textbook and notes. I learned my meds. I graduated with a 94 as valedictorian and today I feel like I would have had just as good a chance on that test if I had spent a year studying Greek mythology!! So much of that test was stuff we never, ever covered in school. My friends from school had never heard of some of the stuff that was on my test either. Is this common or did my instructors leave out some important stuff? I feel like I had to guess at 95% of the questions...and I bet I guessed poorly! How did any of you ever pass this thing? It was all I could do not to cry DURING the test. I feel like I've wasted the past year...and the bad thing is, I left a really great job to pursue my dream. Now I'm scared to death I'll never pass the NCLEX!! I don't know how I can improve my chances if I have to retake it...I don't think I can study any more than I did for this first one and that didn't work! Sorry for the vent but I think I need some encouragement from people that actually made it!!:scrying: :bluecry1: :crying2:

I took mine over a year ago, and was sure I'd failed. I was going to look for a new career. But I passed. So do the majority of people.

During the exam I thought I new absolutely none of those questions.

Hang in there. Even if you do fail, it's probably due to nerves more than anything. You will always have another chance.

Go make yourself a cup of tea and enjoy the rest of the day.

Dear LPNAlmost,

Your vent was soooo sad it almost made me cry too! Alot of LPN's that I have talked to said that they just knew they failed the NCLEX when they took it only to find out that they passed. Don't let the shut off at 85 bother you too much, that doesn't mean that you failed. Keep your chin up until you find out for sure, and then if you didn't pass, try try again!!! Good luck to you, I graduate in December so if you read this same thing again around the first part of next year please remind me of all the things that I told you. God bless,

Sheri

Here's how those computer adaptive tests work: the first few questions get you in the right ball park range of scores, and then the others just fine-tune your score. So if you score all the questions from a 1-10 in terms of difficulty, the first one will be a 5. If you get that right, it asks you a 7. If you get that right it asks you a 9. If you get that wrong it'll go back down and ask an 8. See? It'll very quickly get to the edge of your comfort and stay there for a while. That's why computer adaptive tests feel so hard: it's better to ask you questions that are really testing you! The GRE's done the same way these days, and I hated it.

As for shutting off after 85 questions: since they don't waste time on questions that are too easy for you, it doesn't take as long to find your score. Don't worry. Have a glass of wine and a nice bath, and let us know what the scores are when you get them.

I thought shutting off at 85 meant you do good, I've heard people say they answered 200. I have also seen many posts that said passed at 85 questions, so don't give up yet!!!!

From what I could tell when my nursing class took the boards, different people got different kinds of questions. Mine ,thankfully were mostly med- surg, Had they been peds and ob I would have surely flunked it.

Graduating w/ a 94, my guess it that you passed the thing. Let us know how you do.

i felt the same way when i passed the nclex with 85 questions....and 10 years ago, we still had to wait the 2 weeks to get the results in the mail! :uhoh3:

Turn that situation around. You did so well it shut off at 85 questions! It's a crazy test, we all feel exactly as you do know.

Do something good for yourself. You've worked very hard, you've earned it. :)

YOU PASSED!

I know it.

I took my nclex-pn last week and it shut off at 85. I was freaking out because I just knew I failed. I got my results last friday and I passed. So don't worry most people feel the same way you do. Two of my classmates also shut off at 85 and they both passed. So try not to worry, I just know you passed!!
