CPNE wound; Any advice on how to make my own.

Published

Hi,

I am gathering all my tools to practice for the CPNE skills lab. I want to make my own wound, instead of putting out more money for the ones that I have seen on the internet. If anyone has created their own, please let me know how you did it. Or are you strongly recommending that I buy the wound from the school/interent?

Thank you.

I'm not too handy so I would recommend buying one as the convenient option. Ask for one on the EPN site or look for one for sale on ebay or some of the yahoo EC sites that allow advertizing by members. You might luck out and find someone who is giving it away.

I made mine; it was easy and only cost about 10.00. I bought some green Styrofoam from Wal-Mart. Like a square you would use for a flower arrangement. Then I made a copy of the wound from the study guide. Placed the copy of the wound over the Styrofoam, used a knife to trace the edges of the wound. Used a spoon and scooped about making the center the deepest. Then took some of my daughter's play-dough and smeared the red colored all in the wound and up about ½ inch over the sides. Then I took yellow and smeared over the top and up to the edges of the wound. Then I pinched the yellow and red play dough all along the edges of the wound to kind of make a lip (like you were pinching a pie crust). It worked for me and was cheap to make. I passed the wound with no repeats.

Hope that helps, Christy

I made mine out of tinfoil, but I wouldn't recommend this method. Scrunch up a ball, then then tape it into a box with a hole cut out on the top, then put a piece of paper on top to act as the "skin". Cheap, but the tinfoil tended to rip (which taught me to be gentle, a good skill but not a required skill for the CPNE!)

Rob's DVD show a playdough method that a lot of people found helpful. Do keep in mind that each site has a different "wound", although they are generally the same you don't really have to make a perfect replica of the one in the book. :)

I found a group of people in my area, and together we had plenty of supplies and were able to pool both resources and supplies. We were also able to "CE" each other, and I think that a good deal of my success was directly due to this group! Together I think that we can three wounds, not including my own personal POS!

i did mine like Christy78, only I used the new crayola product that does not dry out and peel as much. It is white and I used some sharpies to add the color. It does work and is cost efficient, but if you can check on ebay, EC student site, etc, the real one is a better practice model and may relieve some of your stress at the unknown during testing. My employer bought one and let me use it, then they loan it out to other employees going through Excelsior. I work for the VA.

I suggest buying the real one. You don't need added anxiety that day trying to pack a wound that you have never see. The practice ones are the exact same one at the CPNE.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully I can resurrect it. I bought some play-doh and other things to make my own wound, but once I get some money I was thinking of buying the real EC wound.

I was wondering though, is the wound that you purchase from EC (which looks like a open humerus fx or something?) the same wound you will be using at the CPNE???

Thanks in advance :-)

I bought mine here : http://www.cpr-savers.com/Industrials/Cpr%20prod/cpr%20manikins/moulage-first-aid-trauma-casualty-simulation-kits.html

It was only 35.00 dollars. I think that's cheaper than EC.

I didn't buy any of the recommended books for Excelsior, but when it came to studying for the CPNE I used the materials that I would be using there. I think there are places to skimp when doing excelsior, but this isn't one of them. Just my opinion, but I aced that wound station because I practiced it so much at home on the exact same wound that was used at my cpne.

I was told that the wound may or may not be the same depending on location.... I am probably buying mine for convenience, but I am not going to bank on it being the same just as they can vary.

my best advise BUY one!!!!!
