Hey there forum family! I am another pre-nursing student on the boards (just registered for my last pre-req:D) and I thought it would be fun, and interesting to share with everyone what our nursing goals and specialties are? I feel proud to be counted among the many that have decided to become nurses because of a drive and desire to impact and improve lives. :redpinkhe
I have been working in a hospital for a little over a year now in an office setting, but I still get to be very involved with the medical staff and the different units of the hospital. I can honestly say I have a passion for PICU! My career goals as a nurse are to complete nursing school, obtain a BSN, obtain my MSN and certification to be a Neo-natology Nurse Practitioner. I love babies and I think taking care of the really sick ones, and watching them return to health will be incredibly rewarding.
Whether you are getting your RN license, or plan on continuing your education further, I'd love to hear it!

I really do not know. When I took the HCA program in highschool, I was certain when I became a nurse I would want to work at a children's hospital. Worked there and completely changed my mind. I work with geriatric patients now, something I never thought I would do, but I enjoy it. Old people have so much more personality and every day is different. I am now thinking I would like to work in the ER or ICU, but I guess I will find out during nursing school!

The whole thing that got me into nursing in the first place was watching a show about MSF (Doctors Without Borders) on TV when I was 14. My primary goals when it comes to nursing are to volunteer abroad at least once a year and eventually to work with Doctors Without Borders!
While at home my dream jobs would be working in the downtown eastside in Vancouver (Canada's worst ghetto, where addiction and psych problems are rampant...massive homeless and vulnerable population) as a street nurse or outreach nurse, moving up north for a little while to do rural nursing with native populations, and/or possibly palliative nursing in the hospital.
I have big plans :)

I want to do ICU and geriatrics. I also want to do medical missions.
Goals are RN, then BSN, then MSN or PhD. Possibly would like to do some research, if I could still practice as a nurse somehow.

Right now I want to graduate and get my BSN (2012). I want to work on the Mother-Baby Unit (aka postpartum unit) and after two years or so I'd like to get certified in maternal-newborn nursing. I might also do something like lactation consultant or childbirth educator.
I also want to do something in pediatrics possibly in an outpatient setting so maybe after I have one or two years of experience I'll get a per-diem or part-time job in that specialty as well. I do know that I do not want to be a Nurse Practitoner. I'm not really into the idea of management or research either so I guess I'll just see where this takes me but I know I'd like to be a preceptor for nursing students after I have some experience under my belt.

First I want my RN.
Secondly I want a job in ED, ICU, CCU, Med Surg, or Hospice Care.
Third as I work as a RN, I want to go for my BSN.
Fourth, I want to get my MSN as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
And, then finally, get my DNP.
BTW - I'm starting my first Nursing class in a couple of weeks....so I have more than a lot to go. =p

I would like to complete my ADN, work Critical Care for a year or so to get my feet wet, and then take up some sort of end of life care such as HOSPICE and/or Oncology. I have a great passion for this type of care.
Btw, I started orientation today...Wish me luck~

I don't have any career goals at present. For me I'm not sure if I'm going back for this second degree (BSN) as a career change or an additional career option.
The emergency department is about the only area of a hospital I find appealing based on my on prior work experience and current observations. That said, shorter patient relationships seem more appealing as well so EM must be where it's at for me assuming I go that route. Who can say really? I never thought I'd be doing what I'm doing now. Autonomy is also a big key to workplace happiness for me. Does that mean I don't like working around others? No, it just means I like driving myself at work. Is there a place in nursing for that? Idk.
I've enjoyed being a work place supervisor and planning/justifying budgets, etc. I don't know if healthcare supervision and administration would appeal to me though.
Good luck in nursing school!

Kudos to you for taking on the area of Hospice or end of life care. I know the PICU can be really rough at times, but I don't think I'd every be emotionally strong enough to deal with death all the time. You are truly one of the angels of nursing :) Good luck in orientation!

I am starting my last year of a BSN program in a few weeks (graduating in May). Though I am interning on a busy med/surg floor, my passion lies in women's health and maternity.
I am currently studying for the GRE and will begin to apply to graduate schools in the winter, that way I can start a part-time MSN program in the fall after I graduate. I'll likely continue with med/surg at the beginning, and transition to a maternity position when jobs become available; all while going PT to grad school.
Three years after BSN graduation, I'll hopefully be done with the FNP and can work in the women's health area. I know that there are specific women's health NP programs, but I feel that the FNP is more versatile and marketable.

Short term goal is to get my RN (starting on that this month).
Long term goal is to become a CRNA, but this is going to take some time. I will have to work a year in a hospital environment to apply to the RN to MSN progrom thru TWU, then I have to have one year experience in ICU before I can even apply for the CRNA program and my grades in my MSN program have to be stellar, because it is extremely competitive to get into the program. I should be able to be finished by the time I am 55, hopefully sooner!
