I recently took care of a man who was awaiting a hospice bed. He was comfort measures suffering from metastatic ca, severe anemia, and hemm bleed. He was a large, peaceful, and polite man in the days before his decline. But one day around noon his status changed. His sats dropped, mental status changed, and bp dropped. He became restless and screamed intermittently. The screams were so terrifying he would open his eyes with a look of terror. I kept comforting him, called the doctor for Ativan, and morphine. The Ativan didn't touch him. I then gave him haldol which also didn't work. My last memories of this man was of him being rolled down the hall screaming by the ambo crew to hospice. This sent chills down my spine. I just remember praying for him while cleaning his room after he left, wondering what type of torment he was experiencing and why. I can still hear his screams.

Congratulations, R.N.! I passed on 10/12 with 75 questions. It felt like a majority of my questions were select all that apply. I had like 1 med, one visual, one rhythm, and like two order of operation. Sata were my weakness so I was sure that I didn't do well. But that Monday I got the great news! :) Now I'm off to the job hunting! High five!

I would like to complete my ADN, work Critical Care for a year or so to get my feet wet, and then take up some sort of end of life care such as HOSPICE and/or Oncology. I have a great passion for this type of care. Btw, I started orientation today...Wish me luck~

Big Hug:redpinkhe Resp Therapy, physical therapy, Ultrasonographer, radiation tech, etc. There are tons of other career options out there for you that can utilize some of your prerequisites, and quite frankly allow you the less physical labor of wiping poo and dealing with irrate, ungreatful, demanding patients. Have you ever heard of any of these other healthcare professionals dealing with some of the crap that dear Nurse Betty:nurse: has to deal with? I want to be a nurse for the options of it all. I pray that it works out for me but you and myself HAVE to keep a positive mind if we want to be successful. I know you will be!~ You seem pretty driven, otherwise you wouldn't care. Go to a career assessment website, look at your options, and talk to your school counselor. Maybe they can give you some advise. Also, do they allow you to get your CNA or shift you to LPN after your first semester? Good Luck Hun!~

I will be starting in August. I am really nervous. I am in a financial crunch b/c I am my sole provider, I will just have to cut back to negative zero! lol:lol2: If I had some sort of financial support, I would definitely go for the BSN straight through but that would be in a perfect world. In maryland, you can get the state boards for your CNA after you've completed your Fundamentals. I think there is just a form that you fill out and mail in?

That's a decision you will have to weigh out for yourself. I will personally do my associates first. There is absolutely no difference in the amount of money that a ADN and BSN make while working side by side on the floors. If a higher degree is what you seek, you may want to take advantage of hospital offered bridge programs after you finish your ADN. That way you can work in your career field of choice and have the liberty to take your BSN classes at a slower pace. (My hospital has a program where you attend classes once a week, all day long, and finish your program in like a year and a half). Perfect for many busy parents, or travel nurses.
