This is my first post. I am considering LNC. Has anyone completed the Kaplan course? I need to make a decision today because registration closes at Kaplan today. Any advice or comments about LNC would be appreciated.

Hi,
Im new to allnurses and so happy to have registered. I am considering becoming a legal nurse consultant and fid everyones comments helpful. I was totally sold on VMs VIP program until I found a class that is run by trial attorneys. There spin on it is that they teach you law for your state as well, and they mentor you instead of a nurse consultant. Any input on that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, bismarck,
Which program is this? Do they cover all aspects of the LNC career? Interesting.

hmm.... you don't need to know the law to that degree - I'd still go with VM VIP - AND if these lawyers were such experts at knowing what a nurse knows and doing what a LNC does they'd be doing it :) Especially when they can charge $500/hour + for their time to their clients. The teachers at VMI, all of them, are active working CLNCs (except Vicki's hubby who teaches the section on contracts - that is *his* business, contracts and such)
What you need to know is how to apply your nursing skills to making the medical records more accessable to attorneys and their clients, you don't need to become an expert in the law - the lawyers are experts in the law and you are an expert in nursing - besides, when you find your self knowing "so much" about the law you are likely to find yourself utilizing that information AND eventually making a costly mistake for the lawyer and client AND when you are doing it without a degree or recognized certification in law practice WHO/WHAT is going to protect you when YOU get sued??
You are a nurse and have the training, licensure and experience to BE a nurse. The training from VMI gives you the training and reputable certification to be a legal NURSE consultant. If you do that for a while and find you really want to know more about the law (other than what you will pick up from your experience with attorneys) then you can do is do what Vicki Millazo did - Become a lawyer! :) So you see, VMI is taught by lawyers - Vicki and her husband, both teachers of the program, ARE lawyers

Can I ask you when you took the VM course and if you are practicing as a CLNC.
Do you still have your 'other' job or do you just do LNC work?

Hello, sassyg0110,
We don't discuss fees on the open boards due to "price-fixing" and anti-trust laws.
Please pm me for any information.

I was unemployed at the time and still don't have a J.O.B. - I am working the business and have one attorney who has responded with a request that I locate a Testifying Expert. I am still in the marketing process. Due to very limited funds (i.e. no personal income at this time) I am taking it a little slower than I might otherwise. I am mailing out intro letters only when I can afford the $ for stamps, and attending networking events that are free and within my gas budget. Still I already have this one active response and am working about 2-4 intro letters every other week to areas both local and in other states (they are great because there will be little if any travel due to distance - we'd do it all by mail, email or phone) in fact the request for the TE is from an attorney over 800 miles away :)
I admit that I am looking for some local "bird in the hand" work (they don't use nurses much in this locale except in hospitals and nursing homes, and I can't work there - back px - so I'm looking for other opportunities and trying to create my own) to help carry the load with paying the bills and to provide some $ to let me increase my marketing :)

I have been considering the course for > 2 years, just never seem to have the $................still have an outstanding St Loan and not sure I'll qualify for financing right now with my credit.............LOVE the Law........I hope to get in one of her classes this year or early next year......frustrated with long hours at hospitals to pay bills, want to be more Independent and enjoy my property more.
don't count yourself out that easily - contact the VMI and discuss with them your financing options - don't call yourself "out" before you pick up the bat
I know nurses at the seminar I attended whose employers paid their tuition - perhaps you can work something out - start turning over those rocks and shaking those bushes!!
if you love the law because of your exposure to it, maybe you know a lawyer who would consider the tuition a modest investment and for whom you could then work inhouse for them for a proscribed time/value as reimbursement..... (talk to VMI about this one before approaching an attorney )
just brain storming here - LOL

Hi! I just found this excellent site today! I am registered for the VMI course in October and I am really excited about it!!
A couple of questions-1) a nurse acrss the street gave me the videos from when she got them- they are from 1996- will they still be helpful? (I am thinking YES!)
2) How do you decide what attorneys to market to when you are going outside of your geographical area? Like since I live in SC, how would I decide to market to someone in,say, NC?:nuke:

How long ago did your register? Have you received the info from them yet?
:balloons:Again - Welcome!
I am registered for the executive level VMI- so no tapes for me! But I am out of work right now (because of a child's illness) so I got the best I could afford!
I am going to Atlanta and I just registered so I didn't get my info yet. I am really excited about it! I am planning on watching the tapes as an "overview" of legal nurse consulting- so that I maybe won't be as overwhelmed in October.
When I do recieve the materials from VMI, do I get the book before the course? That would be awesome since I read every night before bed, and I have some time before my conference!
Thanks for your info!!!:balloons:
