Hi everyone!
Im looking for a little help finding shoes for nursing school( I start this coming august). I received my dress code list and I'm confused about what the school is asking. This is what they said:
" White professional shoes- NO canvas shoes, canvas sneakers, sling backs, or clogs may be worn. Shoes must be all white, leather, closed toe and heel and have a high vamp"
Please help me with shoe suggestions that meet their requirements!
Thanks AN Community!
I love my New Balance. I added arch supports in them and my feet never hurt. Make sure you try standing for a bit in what ever shoe you get, so you have an idea of how your feet will feel after a long clinical. Nothing worse then leaving clinicals with tears in your eyes because you want to cut your feet off.
the white is pretty obvious - you want to be able to see any blood/bodily fluids or meds on the tops of your shoes. the canvas and high vamp is to prevent injury from dropping things. canvas provides little protection from falling needles. you're going to want something super comfortable and not too heavy.
I would advise against the Danskos for your first nursing shoe simply because of how expensive they are... if you're sold on them, make sure to try them on and walk around in them for a long time, don't just buy online. Reason being, I am about to graduate and am on my 3rd pair of shoes. It takes a handful of long clinical days to figure out what you like and what you don't like in a shoe - everyone has their own preferences. I found a lot of the clog type of shoes (with or without backs) to be too heavy for my ankles. I didn't like anything too high either. I went through a couple of cheap almost like "styrofoam" material ones that were light in weight, non slip and pretty comfortable to get to my perfect pair of Nurse Mates - which actually are pretty cute (not sure if it's high enough "vamp" for you though):
Yeah those aren't "vamp" enough....they are looking for all white leather with the enitre top of the foot covered with laces or the tongue of the sneaker.
Danskos...can be heavy and hurt your feet if you aren't used to being on the 24/7...I personally never liked them.....a good high support walking shoe I have found best.

Those are usually not accepted by most facilities for the same reason canvas shoes are not acceptable there is no protection for the top of your foot from needles, sharps or any bodily secretions. The whole front/top of your foot must be covered and there must be a heel (i.e. no clogs) as per the OSHA regulations followed in most facilities.
It means you have to have "good, professional" shoes. Many of the popular, comfortable shoes today are not really appropriate for the hospital. For instance, canvas isn't water (or blood, urine, vomit) proof. Leather usually is. For a while, Crocs were really popular. But, for the same reason, they're not appropriate. That's why it says a "closed-toe." Sling-backs, clogs, & slip-ons come off too easily if you're suddenly having to run or twist in a weird way. I once ended up circulating an emergency C-Section wearing only ONE SHOE b/c I ran out of the other other running down the hall pushing the bed! - last time I wore clogs! - that's why it says a high vamp (side) Meaning no Mary-Jane styles. They want white shoes because they're more professional looking & easier to keep clean, you can bleach/polish them when you get blood or vomit on them. Just get a comfortable pair of plain tennis shoes, or NurseMates, Danskos or whatever. Personally, I love Merrells.
Good luck with school!

You can google nursing shoes, allhearts.com has a nice selection. I know a lot of people like the Dansko nursing shoes but they can be expensive. I got a pair of all white Cherokee shoes like what you described as a requirement for your school for only $50 at allhearts.com. I just received them via FedEx yesterday and they are very comfortable
