confused about SSN

Published

hi. i'm in the philippines ryt now. i have acquired a california ssn years ago (not yet expired) but it says on the card that it is not valid for work. i am now trying to fill in my application form to california BON for nclex application. some people say that once you have ssn its lifetime thereby, can i write my SSN in the blank provided, or should i apply for another ssn? im confused.. hope somebody could help me.

thanks.

NY has always required proof of citizenship and proof that you are legal someplace. Have always recommended that the nurse just include a copy of their passport with their application to NY and this is what they are asking for now. Does not require a US visa, just a valid passport. Does not state proof of US citizenship.

Just send them what they are asking for. That is all that you need to do. The fact that you used your auntie's address is what also caused problems for you as it appears that you are in the US already.

Not aware of NY making any changes to what they have previously done, that is why there is no date given on the letter more than likely, like NY.

I'm not sure sir Lawrence but I read somewhere(an official immigration document) that you need the CGFNS CERTIFICATE(CGFNS EXAM PLUS ENGLISH EXAM)not just the cgfns exam, or an alternative is passing the NCLEX-RN exam(the only nursing test without the need of English exam support) to be eligible for the petitioning process.

We are all quite aware that the only proof of passing of the CGFNS exam requires the CGFNS Certificate. This has been in effect for more than 25 years, and is not anything new.

When any of us state passing of the CGFNS exam, it is well understood that the CGFNS Certificate is required. And this has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

passport is to be submitted through snail mail?

i asked my employer if they can issue me a cerification. they just told me that i should send a letter to NYSED that i am submitting my visa application through them.

on the letter, there's a license # on the upper right but when i checked on online verification, it was registered to another name.:o

You should straighten everything out first w/ NYSED as they may also be somewhat confused since you gave a US add. as Suzanne mentioned and just follow all the instructions they have given you or will give you. Coordinate w/ your Aunt who have all the correspondent letters.

You do not have your license # yet per your previous posts so this license # is obviously not yours. Straighten this out as well w/ them and if someone is advising you to use that license #, I suggest that you not heed it. For the benefit of the doubt, it may be just a mistake but whether it was given to you by mistake or not, you shouldn't use what is not yours. You will get in trouble.

A copy of your passport should have been submitted when you first sent in the application to NY. You never send the passport to anyone, only a copy of the page that has your picture and your passport number on it to prove that you are legal somewhere.

And let this be a lesson to others here, always better to use your address where you currently are, things do not get done any quicker when you use a relative's address in the US and can only delay you for things like this.

At this point, suggest that you phone to them to get it straightened out. And you do it, not your aunt.

There is no reason for your employer to be involved in this at all, there is nothing that they need to provide. There is nothing that they can provide that the state needs.

Understood. I simply made a statement for the sake of those who might misunderstand it(preventive measure).

If I was wrong, I humbly accept the admin or the mods correction. Please don't sound antagonistic or authoritative as I am an easy fellow to deal with. Give respect because we respect you and see you in high regard. I understand the tasks that admin and mods deal with everyday, being a mod myself in another forum not related to nursing. It is a no-no to make members feel intimidated.

Please delete my post in this thread/topic if you see it as nonsense.

Thank you once again and have a good day.

I read an article similar like this in the newspaper ManilaMail, august22-28, Under Immigration Q & A by Atty Steve Rodriguez. The person's concern was that he got a social security number several years ago that says "not valid for employment", he used it to get a job, and then his employer eventually got a letter from the Social Security Office saying that his SSN# doesn't match their records. Now he was afraid that SSA or INS might come after him and he didn't know what to do.

The answer of the attorney to his question is that this dilemma is very common. The purpose of the SSN# is for workers to credit social security earnings and when they retire, they could be given back those credits for making payments to the SSA. If your name or your SSN doesn't match what the SSA's database has, they don't give the credit to you, and they suspend the fund until it's settled. The employers get a letter called a "No Match" letter. But last summer, I guess the USCIS and Homeland Security proposed new regulations, and these may be implemented soon. Homeland Security is going to make rules for employers who recieve "No Match" letters, and employers who don't comply may face fines as high as $10,000 per illegal worker and/or incident.

The article says that the best way to fix this kind of dilemma is to be sure you have a valid SSN#, and if there are mistakes, it has to be corrected. It also says that the best way to secure a valid unrestricted SSN is with proof of U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residence, Proof of Work Authorization, Proof of Valid Working Visa, or other status that permits lawful employment.

Basically, if you use an SSN# that says 'not valid for employment', this means you are working illegally...go ahead and use it if you want to take a chance at being deported, or being barred from coming to the US in the future...

you can't get a ssn for the purpose of sitting nclex or submitting a application to ca. ca no longer accept applications without a ssn and to get a ssn you need to prove that you have a valid work/immigrant visa

welcome to the site and can i just point out this in terms of service where we ask members not to post in text talk etc

please do not type entirely in capitals as considered shouting on the internet! desiring to maintain professionalism, text speak (also known as chatspeak, txtspk, texting language or txt talk) is discouraged. along with using proper english spelling and punctuation, this shows respect for the owner, other bulletin board members & guests and makes it easier to read your important thoughts.

this is also a good time to practice your english especially if you have to sit a english exam
