hi. i'm in the philippines ryt now. i have acquired a california ssn years ago (not yet expired) but it says on the card that it is not valid for work. i am now trying to fill in my application form to california BON for nclex application. some people say that once you have ssn its lifetime thereby, can i write my SSN in the blank provided, or should i apply for another ssn? im confused.. hope somebody could help me.
thanks.
John83,
You are right, I also do not have SSN and having such limitations. In fact I do not understand the process how I will get my SSN in future. For instance, if I got sponsor to file my petition (after the retrogression) for greencard, then what is the process next?
In addition, you get the hard license if you pass the NCLEX because without the SSN, there is no license for CA board(and some others states). To leiza, thanks but still for me, it's better that you have SSN...In my case, I don't have a license despite passing the NCLEX-RN because I still don't have SSN; hence no license/registration number and somehow, it creates some "problems/limitations"(though some might not see or consider it as such)...I don't know if you'd understand my point...

The SSN# is the final step in the immigration process, you will get it once you receive a visa that will permit you to work in the US, and you have arrived in the US and are ready to begin work.
You cannot get it here if you visit with a tourist visa.
In order to get it, you will have to go thru the entire processing and get a visa by the US Embassy where you are. Please take the time to do some reading on the stickies on this forum, there is much information that you need to have. Suggest that you start with the one called the Primer that is located at the top as well.

If I may interject, and I hope you don't mind. This must be a new policy of theirs. Each BON can change their rules and policy anytime, esp. when it comes to immigration-related issues.
You don't have to worry, though because you can always present them with a SSN and additional proof such as your green card (w/c is better) once you have migrated successfully. This is what CA BRN has been doing for years. They just give a letter for proof of passing the NCLEX for petitioning process then gives the applicants 3 years to give them the SSN. You can get petitioned by just presenting the letter that you passed the NCLEX-RN exam and that is all that is needed anyway and not the licensure hard card. And many get petitioned by just presenting the proof of passing the CGFNS exam (for those who applied in States that requires it).
May I ask how long does NY BON require to submit the SSN ? They should have indicated that. CA BRN gives 3 years w/ an option of extension.

thanks for an early reply lawrence.
actually, my aunt got the letter since i used her NY address for my NCLEX application. She just informed me but as far as i know they didn't mention anything about it. just the immigration status. someone told me that i should send back the letter and just attach a copy of my passport. is this true?
i went to their website but no information regarding that matter.

I doubt it. They are now mimicking what CA BRN has been doing for years. They need proof of your immigration status - proof that you are in the US legally and able to work legally. Your Philippine issued passport will not do.
I suggest that you let your Aunt look for that piece of info. She may have overlooked it and if there really aren't any info. regarding the validity you may contact NYSED directly and ask but don't make it big issue. All you need is that piece of paper saying that you passed the NCLEX and you can get started on the petitioning process, then once you have hurdled the immigration procedures and are already in the US, you can apply for the SSN and then present that to NYSED and they'll give you your hard license card just like what is being done in CA.

I'm not sure sir Lawrence but I read somewhere(an official immigration document) that you need the CGFNS CERTIFICATE(CGFNS EXAM PLUS ENGLISH EXAM)not just the cgfns exam, or an alternative is passing the NCLEX-RN exam(the only nursing test without the need of English exam support) to be eligible for the petitioning process.

Most employers prefer a pass with NCLEX to petition as to work as a RN in the US you must pass the exam but you can go through the green card process if you have passed CGFNS exam and also meet the requirements for visa screen certificate which also includes the English exam. Because of retrogression I would imagine employers would go the NCLEX route before they accept you as there is plenty of time to do it.
In the past a few nurses used the route of passing CGFNS exam and getting visa screen done, moving out to the US and then take NCLEX but I don't think at the moment that is a route going to be accepted.
Saying that there are a handful of states that still have the requirement of passing the CGFNS exam if you are a foreign trained nurse.
hi lawrence!!!
my aunt sent me the letter.
they were asking me to submit a visa, employment authorization or an alien registration number. its a requirement before a license can be issued.
i don't have any of those. my employer sent me a contract letter. i don't like to forward it to NYSED( find it private and personal)
can i just ask my employer to help me?
should i send them a copy of my NCLEX, CGFNS, IELTS ANd VISA SCREEN as well?
thanks...
