Concealed Carry for Caregivers

Published

I've been a lurker for awhile, and I know that this post has been brought up 1-2 times in the last 2 years that I've been an RN. So... you grouchy old farts that would rather I'd revive an old post can just stuff a sock in it.:D I want to gauge opinions based on our CURRENT situation after the shooting yesterday in San Bernadino, CA.

Truth be told, One single caregiver with a concealed carry permit could have shut this couple down before they hit 14 fatalities.

I plan on getting my CC in January, but I know as an RN, should my handgun be discovered, I'll probably lose my license. It will stay in my car when I am at work. If someone wants to carry out mayhem at my workplace, we are ALL sitting ducks. It is not ok or fair. What are your thoughts?

I am in California but it's the IE and hunters, fisherman and gun enthusiasts abound here and it's just the culture. But you don't need to shoot a deer or a quail with an AR-15. There would be nothing left of the animal to eat.

.

LOL! Your ignorance is showing. The AR 15 is chambered in 223 Remington. A low power round that is not even legal in many states for deer hunting and it is not powerful enough to provide reliable, quick and clean kills on deer sized game.

All of the tradition deer rifle rounds are MUCH more powerful than the 223. The 223 was specifically designed NOT to kill deer (or human) sized game. The military therory behind it is that it's better to wound the enemy than to kill him. Kill him and one guy is out of the fight, wound him and it takes 2 of his buddies to carry him to the rear, thus 3 guys out if the fight.

That said the 223 is a very popular hunting round for coyote and fix sized game.

Being a rifle, it is illegal to hunt quail with any rifle. You need a shotgun.

In a way we should all be greatfull that so many if these mass shooters choose the low power 223 cartriges, rather than the much more powerful tradition deer hunting rounds, or worse yet a shotgun. If they did that there would hardly be any wounded, all would he dead.

I just don't understand how you guys can be on your what...335th? shooting this year, twice this week, and STILL think the answer is more guns! Do you not know what life is like in every first world country except the united states? It honestly frightens me.

The reason we have so many mass shootings is because of rampant religious extremism. More religion = more violence and murder.

You don't need a Concealed Carry License to carry concealed pistol in your vehicle in Texas, You can leave it in your car while at work.

If you have a CC you can carry while at work, unless your hospital has a 30.06 sign posted....

I wonder if maybe some of these "bad guys" obtain their guns from people that so desperately need to be a hero during their morning commute, that they risk leaving the firearms unattended in their vehicle all day/night? Wait, "bad guys" don't break into or steal cars now do they?

I am sure most of the guns used to commit crimes were once legal guns stolen from careless gun owners. INCLUDING most of the guns that are smuggled north to Canada an used to commit crimes here.

Your right to bear arms in America is affecting us in Canada. And that is not fair or right.

Any round that has the power to knock the recipient flat on their back would be powerful enough to knock the shooter on their backsides. Break ribs? Maybe. Might cause a good-sized bruise though. Knock the wind out of them for a while? Possibly.

Respectfully, you are wrong. Do a little research. I can shoot a 40 cal or a 45 with one hand, it doesnt knock me around at all.

(Shrug) I have made that shot several times. In one case after having already been shot myself.

Not everyone panics in these situations.

Absolutely. I assume you were highly trained and had practiced for that type of situation. You are not the person who concerns me.

Now what about the person who has a concealed weapon, basic training, and is thrust (or inserts themselves) into a gunfight. Based on your military training and experience, how's that going to go?

Our rights to bear arms is probably very good reason your native language isn't German or Japanese in Canada.......

Yeah, keeping control of the borders is kind of an issue huh?

This is kind of a silly statement. Gun ownership is legal and actually fairly popular in Canada.

You are referring to Newton's Third Law right?

Well you are right in that 45 auto will typically have 300 ft/lbs of energy a the muzzle and a bullet weighing only 185 grains or so does not have the kinetic energy upon impact to physically lift and throw a 175lb human.

That being said, I think what the others are trying to say is that it is very difficult to remain standing when you receive a chest of 185 grain bullet traveling 900 feet per second delivering 300 ft/lbs of energy and you stop all of that within a micro second on a palm sized area of your chest.

It can be certainly done, there are many videos of people taking center mass shots and continuing the fight.

Liken it to standing up and taking a baseball bat full in the chest swung by a professional player. The bat is significantly less ft/lbs of energy than a 45 but you get the picture.

Yes, gun are legal in Canada. But, we don't just leave them in our car while we go to work.

Our rights to bear arms is probably very good reason your native language isn't German or Japanese in Canada.......

That doesn't make any sense at all. The Germans and Japanese weren't defeated by civilians packing heat at work.

I guess i just don't understand. And I'm glad.
