Hi everyone, I'm starting this thread so we can share information about the CAS, the program we should pass in order to gain registration in Queensland, Australia. I have passed all four components of the CAS challenge test and it can be done with hard work and a lot of prayer, you do not really need agencies for this. For starters, the challenge test is a 70 item test with multiple choice questions, occasionally with identification items also.

CONGRATULATIONS JOETURTLE!!! Your story and your experiences are a big inspiration for all of us. Muchos muchos congratulations!

Congrats Joeturtle, what a brave act you did nice one! If I had passed the clinical component which I missed by 1 point, I'd still be not confident to do it. Anyhow, I am taking my clinical placement as soon as possible. I've passed the theoretical components of the exam. I'm still waiting for my hospital placement though. Are you still in Brisbane? My friend said you can convert 456 to 457 through online submission in the immigration's website. He got his in 3 days. He's now working in Princess Alexandra. Thank you so much for enlightening us!

Dear Joeturtle,

Congratulations! Thank u 4 sharing us everybody the tips for the exam. You make us very very proud like Doc Branyan. You are very intillegient and we admire you very much, mwah! when time for us to exam, we can prepare it very hard, with all ur help and inspiration. :clpty:

Hi everyone,

I passed Part B clinical challenge!!! Praise God for granting me this one.

First of all, Brisbane is a beautiful city; clean, sunny and well organized. I wouldn't mind living here :D. As to the test, it was difficult, but doable. My assessor was a soft spoken gentleman and was easy to talk to. (Very far from some of the clinical instructors back home ) He told me that I would be allowed 6 minor mistakes and if at any time I "kill" my patient, the test is over. An actor played the patient and we worked through 5 scenarios. I was really nervous all throughout but the assessor kept on reassuring me so it really helped. (My hands were ice cold) The scenarios included asystole, ectopic preganancy, pressure ulcers, diabetes and cancer. You will have to do assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation. he asked on pharmacology and rationale for doing procedures. The test examines basic knowledge and they are very particular on patient SAFETY. He also made me do CBG, IV med and patient education. I had a very good actor who played the patient, you can really gather assessment data from him. All in all I had 3 mistakes: I recapped the needle (stupid mistake really) I failed to address the patient's pain immediately and I administered morphine without a second nurse present (according to law, 2nurses must sign the medication record if using regulated drugs) My advise, go for the clinical challenge if you are allowed to do so. But only if you are confident with your basic nursing knowledge and skills ( Do everything by the book). BTW, they have ideal practice here so always do hand washing and gloving before any procedure. It took 3 hours and at the end, he informed me that I passed. At last after 9 months, I will soon be registered in Queensland. I still have 85 days to stay in Australia. The next step would be to wait for my license and hopefully find an employer who will sponsor for a working visa. In the mean time, I'll enjoy Brisbane. :)

Congratulations JOeturtle!

HI Joe turtle... Please refresh me.... are you an experienced nurse?... ICU nurse?... Do you think unexperienced nurses like us can pass part B? Do you do actual interventions or its all talk.

Congratulations again!!!::yeah::up:

hi joeturtle,

congratulations on your achievement. we would like to know how did they assess you point by point including your nursing interventions, if you wouldn't mind. this will help us in the preparation. i'm quite concerned about pharmacology. will they ask you actions, etc? and for the regulated drugs, i think counter checking of 2 nurses is ideal but not required by law in queensland. page 9 of the the environmental health unit, queensland health: what nurses need to know states that:

"there is no requirement in the health (drugs and poisons) regulation 1996 (qld) for a registered nurse to have a witness when administering or recording controlled drugs. these requirements are in addition to current legislative requirements and are usually addressed through internal organisational policies. requirements for checking, recording the use and witnessing the administration of a controlled or regulated restricted drug by a second person, do have the potential to improve the security of these drugs and to prevent misuse."

you should have told him that. nevertheless, congratulations and we're looking forward to your response.

Whoa...I'm so happy for you Mr. Joeturtle...Congratulations!!! :yeah:

I wish you the best there in your new life in Australia. Maybe when we do get a chance to finally follow you there, you'd teach us how to surf? :chuckle

Congrats Joe Turtle! I have been monitoring this thread for a while now and it has given me new hopes in pursuing my RN dream of working in Australia.I currently have a Cali USRN license and a commendable IELTS score under my belt,my main concern:is the Phil Nurse licensure a strict requirement in the assesment for bridging program to AUS(mainly Queensland);or would the USRN license suffice to produce evidence of a RN license?I am a Filipino.THank you for your haste response.

Do you have a local license? For most it is required that you have a license in the country where you did your training. Only exception would be if you would not be allowed to sit the exam because you are not a citizen.

Hi,

Nurses without experience can pass the part B but its a matter of being confident. The exam was all BASIC nursing skills, which all new grads are supposed to know already. As to interventions, you do all of it on the actor-patient except for invasive ones like IV or SC meds which is done on dummies. You also need to talk with your patient to establish rapport and give reassurance.
