Comparison of US and UK pay

Published

I am a RN working in the US. I am just beginning to look into the comparison of pay and cost of living. If I moved to the UK, can I expect to make more or less? Can anyone give me any information on this? Also, is the shortage of nurses in the UK comparable to the shortage we have here. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I enjoyed this post.It is an eye opening experince for me reading all the post. I have friends in the UK. I have decided to stay put in the US since i cannot handle the workload in the Uk.I am glad i live in california now more than ever.

I still have to say I miss the UK vacation time, and I dont think I will ever get used to 6 hours per pay period over here. or to put it into real terms 12 days a year and also includes any sick time

If you were an RN with 14 years of experience, which band would you be on?

I think a lot depends on what type of experience, what your plans and goals are, which area you work. I think in general on the wards you are looking at an average band 5/6 unless sister/charge, nurse specialists can be a little bit more

Most of our CNS are only band 6, it is the CNS service managers that get 7's if they are lucky

shows how different hospitals work I know my friend is a nurse specialist in Falls and syncope and she is on what used to be H but not sure what banding it is although I know she had to fight for it and the only one doing what she does (both) as a lot of hospitals I know they tend to be either falls or syncope.

depends on your role - if you were a staff nurse in a none specialist area you would be a maxxed out on increments band 5 , if you were a specialist staff nurse , sister/ charge nurse -6 , senior sister or nurse specialist band 7 , nurse manager or 'nurse consultant' 8a ...

the bands have 8 -10 nominally annual increments

It depends on where you work, the trusts have all banded differently. Our nurse specialists and practitioners have 6 and nurse managers 7's. Some Senior Nurses have 8a but some have come out on a 7

Hi

In the big teaching hospital near us (NE England) CNS are band 6 unless Lead CNS who are 7s. Formerly E grade ITU nurses (so many with a fair amount of ITU exp) who are expected to take charge of a 20 bed ITU/HDU/Cardiac surgical stepdown got band 5s.

At another smaller hospital in a different trust E grades IN itu AND IN THEATRES got band 6s.

I read in the Nursing Standard that many trusts are "re-organising" their services as they do not see CNS s as "value for money".

We as nurses have generally not been rewarded by AFC for the traditionally medical roles we have taken on- and that was one of the main things AFC was supposed to address.

personally i think afc stinks

All the CNS nurses at my trust got band 7 and their manager an 8b.
