Columbia University-ETP

Published

Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.

I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?

I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.

I just want to see MORE positive feedback!!!! ;) Where are all those people!?!?

Honestly...it's easier for people to write more negative than positive. It helped me to think of it this way: if i was happy somewhere i'd probably be busy working and loving my job, and not have time to be on the internet talking about my education experience.

the negative stuff really got to me at first too..but it's everywhere. like a lot of people said--maybe it just wasn't the right fit.

Another good point! I have to remember, we heard from three or four people of the 160+ that are in the program. Thanks for putting other perspectives on this, it helps! :)

Hi all,

I made the difficult decision today to attend Columbia next year. I'm super excited to meet all of you and to be back in NY (and I feel really lucky to be given the opportunity to go to Columbia) but I'm very sad to be leaving Chicago, Northwestern, and my wonderful boyfriend behind. Anyway...on to bigger and better things, right!? I probably won't be back in NY (I say back b.c my family is from CT) until May but I'm going to start looking at apartments while I'm home on my spring break in March (I'm 21, female, and definitely not living in university housing...I've actually lived in Columbia housing and the cockroaches and I didn't make friends easily)...SO...with that said, if anyone is interested in going in on an apartment in Inwood/Washington Heights or Morningside Heights let me know so that we can be in contact (I currently live with two other girls in 3 bedroom in Evanston, IL so before we make any promises it would be nice to know how each of us likes to live so that we can enjoy living together)

Thanks all!

i'm from south jersey right outside of philadelphia and looking for roomies too. I'm 24 and i'll be bringnig along a handsome and very well-behaved kitty cat. I am looking to live with someone who knows the city a bit! (ha ha i feel like i'm putting out a personal ad ) i've been there a few times and i have college friends there but they all live on the east side.

so exciting! i can't believe i'm moving to new york city! (i just moved back from new hampshire--haha PRETTY big difference!) anyone else looking for roomies too?! oh and i won't be looking until april either even though my friends keep sending me ads and it's tempting!

ahhh still waiting for that "sorry we mixed up your application with someone else's" phone call.:)

also...okay this is my last post for the next 10 minutes haha. my friend works with a Columbia NP. she said the program was great and informational and really prepared her, and the only thing lacking for her was that she wishes the professors were a bit more attentive and they seemed to be distracted with the doctorate program.

all in all, my friend constantly likes to remind me "they make bank." haha.

accelerated degree programs are still fairly new and there's probably kinks in all of them. so for those of you who are nervous about finding a job..i wouldn't worry if you feel this is your true calling! i think it'd be better to reevaluate if you were going into real estate or mortgages however...

Woo hoo! All things we like to hear Lao224 :)

yeah i'll be talking to 2 former Columbia NPs in the next few days so i'll let you guys know how that goes! sorry it's taken me so long to post!

I CAN'T WAIT!! we're all gonna rock this program

Those taking Enviro Micro...I have the book (I took the class over the summer) and I'd be happy to sell it to either of you for like 50% of what they charge you...let me know if they're using the same book so that we can negotiate and I can send it out to you

Lao0,

I love animals so I'm all for a cat (though not so hot on the whole shedding business) and/or dogs (I might adopt one depending on how things go over the next few months). I know the city quite well, but, having spent less time in the Cloisters area, I know less about it. That said, I'm all about the rest of the city and I will fiercely defend its smell, its trash, and its hot summer subway stations!

Like I said, I'll be home after the 3rd week in March to visit my family and check out the rentals in Inwood/Washington Heights and Morningside Heights...if you'd like to talk further (or anyone else for that matter), and don't feel it's appropriate on the forum, feel free to shoot me an e-mail

Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Lao0224 - thank you so much for those positive posts!!!

Cant wait to see your post

As far as last year's forum is concerned...

It was truly shocking to see how much negativity was allowed to permeate the 2008 group. Personally, I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to become a nurse, and a highly educated one at that (not to toot my own horn, but if all of us are in at Columbia we must have some intelligence). I also feel very lucky to have been chosen to serve the community. Honestly, before I had been accepted I was having a really hard time because all I wanted to do was help other people. Now I feel like I've been given the opportunity to do that for the rest of my life, and frankly, that is more important to me than where I go. It's truly unfortunate that the former etp student that commented on the 2008 forum seemed so entrenched in his/her own unhappiness that he/she couldn't see how his/her deep debt was still helping so many people. I know it'll be hard academically, financially, and probably at times, emotionally, but I'm so proud to be a part of this cohort with all of you and I hope that throughout our time at Columbia that we'll be able to keep each other's spirits and work ethics high!

We're like a team!

(sorry if I sap-oed all over the forum but I was feeling very "up" about the whole thing, even after reading last year's forum)

Fellow future midwives :) -

Yes yes, at the info session I attended, the director of the ETP program said that if people are planning to stay in the NYC area after graduation, they should combo-up their midwifery with the women's health NP option since that's a position that's more in demand. I guess if you applied for midwifery only it's not that hard to switch to the dual option? Anyway, it seems to me that it'll be a good part of our training to work with midwives who are doing their jobs despite major obstacles... certainly we will all face people in our careers who don't understand the usefulness of our jobs, or don't trust our expertise because we're not MDs. Better to learn to cope early!

That said, another reason to watch that "Business of Being Born" documentary - it's all based in NYC basically and the main midwife character they follow is Columbia-trained!

I'm also a little worried about every penny I spend for the next three years being borrowed, but I'm pretty sure it's worth it. Every time I get that feeling that I've been conned into believing I'll get better training just because it's a prestigious school, I remember - there actually aren't loads of other schools offering accelerated programs that combine midwifery with NP training. And nearly all of them are big name, big pricetag sorts of places. So I'm prepared to swallow the debt. Yum!

well said, sevillaes!

I could not agree with you any more. This will me a difficult, yet fulfilling career, and worth every struggle to achieve it.
