Columbia University-ETP

Published

Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.

I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?

I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.

Oh - and they say the average age is 26, and getting younger every year.

But there are still some students in their 50s, so nobody should feel too old or young! If you have the experiences required to know this is what you want and to be ready to do it, that's what matters, I'd say.

I'm 25, graduated from college in 2005 as a religion / international relations major and thought I wanted to go into theology. It's taken me a few years to reform that nonsense. Some people know earlier, some live a whole other life for decades before finding this new direction. I think the diversity of experiences is really going to add a richness to our education.

For all you future midwives that are nervous about your chosen specialty- NY has tons of job opportunities but it really varies between neighborhoods. For example Parkslope in Brooklyn is swarming with midwives. Also, many NY hospitals employ midwives rather than residents to cover shifts-there's always a doctor on call. The downside to midwifery is that in NY if very high, I don't know about other states though. It's definitely more bankable to have a combined Women's Health/Midwifery degree. If you feel this is your calling then go for it! you will never cease to be awed by the birthing process and fulfilled with your career.

(These are the words of a Columbia midwifery graduate)

oh god i sound like a postergirl for midwifery

i love it! keep up the positive energy even if it means being a postergirl..

Has anyone NOT yet received their financial aid package? I was told that mine would be arriving this past Friday and still have not gotten anything. Anybody else in the same boat?

I loved The Business of Being Born Documentary! It was definitely an eye opener. Midwifery is huge in Vermont, and most of my friends who have children used midwives, one of them even did home births and loved it! It was really scary to see all the interventions that are used, and the harm they can do. I also thought the ironic twist of the producer having pre-term labor an interesting contrast, and helped show that obviously we still need the hospitals. Anyway - i'm not going for midwifery, but it made me think a little more about it.

If you have netflix, it is one of the documentaries you can watch online.

Wanna: i've heard they are coming via email today.

I also have not received anything about financial aid either. Conceivably, that's because I'm not getting any (I have a bit of money sitting around, but not enough to cover everything), but it would still be nice to hear something.

Ladies and Gents,

I have a very important announcement to make: I HAD SUCCESS WITH OSCAR! I just called to fix some crazy FAFSA stuff that was going on and after 20 minutes he was finally able to help me. Granted, I had all of the information and had talked to FAFSA last week....but he actually did something helpful! (and said "feel better" when we hung up since I'm sick as a dog right now)

We should all do the hora or have a party or something in celebration!

ugh..well you are all ahead of me. i haven't even submitted my fasfa yet due to a missing W-2. I had a terrible employer when i lived in NH who went out of business and he won't answer any of my phone calls...i guess i can just estimate??

I've emailed Oscar..I hope it'll all work out!

I want my financial aid package. I know what to expect, which is the regular scholarship $33,688, BUT i'm hoping for a miracle where they somehow give me more than that! ha ha! Better to crush my hopes sooner than later, right ;)

I didn't think it was possible to be awarded more...BUT there are TONS of nursing scholarships out there (especially if you're a minority in nursing)

Good luck!
