Columbia ETP 2015

Published

Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.

Anyone else?!

The 160 would be for the total ETP class (all specialties) and then you get broken into your specialties/cohort for the MSN portion - so I think that would make sense that there would be only 9 in psych? Psych is typically one of the smaller ones compared to Family, Midwifery, etc.

I am wondering about the weeding people out thing during the ETP year. I spoke with someone in the ETP program (year 1) now, and she said that Columbia admitted way more students than they have room for this year. Hmmm??

I think the numbers you're talking about are, 160 (or so) in the pre-specialty first year when everyone is together. Once that's over, specialties are broken up into much smaller groups.

I asked completion rates and was given a vague answer that a few people drop out in the first week. I know OHSU was able to give me concrete info (100% completion for midwifery), so it's been on my mind.

Previous year's boards seem to echo that whole "This year is the biggest class ever!" thing. I'm sure they admit a lot with the expectation that a good chunk of us will accept other offers

@Doulame I was one of the students accepted to ETP, but not for midwifery. I've had pretty extensive/honest communication with the admissions office. From what I have been told, there will be no internal waitlist for the midwifery specialty track. Those spots will be reapportioned to the students applying to the (non-ETP) master's program--this is what I have been told personally, so perhaps it would be a different conversation with an applicant they felt more strongly about. I just can't commit to an expensive, 3 yr education that does not put me in a position to practice as midwife, so I'll likely decline my spot at Columbia.

Oh, gosh. I had no idea that's how they worked their waitlist for midwifery. I would decline as well if that is the case. There are a lot of paths to midwifery. I'm sorry this wasn't yours but I am sure you will make a great midwife and I admire your perseverance! Good luck!

mivsy, I got into Columbia and am waiting to hear from OHSU. I applied for the ABSN-FNP program and just interviewed last week. I'd love to hear what you've come up with in your comparison of the OHSU and Columbia programs.

I haven't been posting any comments on here, only reading, but I saw that someone mentioned the Master's Entry program at Johns Hopkins. At this point, I am trying to decide between Columbia (FNP) vs. JHU Master's Entry. It sounds like both schools are pricey, but JHU's tuition is definitely cheaper than Columbia's, plus cost of living in Balitmore is much more affordable. Is anyone else considering both programs? Do you know how many more years it would take after JHU's program to get the DNP?

Hi! On average the DNP can be completed in two years/6 semesters for MSN to dnp programs. If the 2015 ETP is the last MSN etp class (at Columbia) and Columbia is transitioning the program to DNP maybe Columbia will offer a route into the DNP for current MSN etp students during the transition.

Have you been accepted to JHU's program yet? The department sends their decisions out in batches rather than all at once.

Thanks for the response. Aré you also considering JHU? Yes, I received a letter from hopkins last week.

Yes, but I have not received an admissions decision at this point. However, I am hoping that everything works out for me with Columbia. I'm currently searching for housing in NYC.

I'm from the Seattle looking for housing over the visit day weekend. If anyone is looking for a roommate or is viewing properties, let me know! I'm not banking on the grad housing. Especially if I can get a better deal in the surrounding area. ([email protected]

Just some food for thought from someone that used to live in NYC. Housing can be pretty intense.

Going with a broker can be helpful for those not able to run around attending open houses everyday with your deposit in your pocket. However, it can be really expensive, so i went that route only 1 time out of my 6 moves.

For anyone looking to go the more DIY route, you can choose to go with a sublet. I've already secured a place for the summer, which will give me plenty of time (as it can take months) to find the right place. It may feel sketchy for some, but i used craigslist, which is what i always used when living in nyc.
