Health One vs Centura

U.S.A. Colorado

Has anyone worked for both of these companies and preferred one over the other? I'm just curious. :)

That would explain it. I went to see the NM, bypassed the online application and just used the online as a search for jobs.

I have had the EXACT same experience with HCA (immediately saying not under consideration). I applied for the Emergency New Grad Training program, I have ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, NRP and several Psych certifications. I was also an EMT, not trying to brag but I would think I wouldn't be sent to the 'reject' pile that quick?! :) I also took the test right after I submitted my application and it almost immediately went to the 'not under consideration'. I guess I didn't answer the questions the way they are looking for??

Bummed.....seemed like a great way to break in to the ED!!

I honestly don't think it was you, I think it's the experience box. If you don't have any, the computer trashes the application. Seriously consider taking your resume into the NM. it worked for my classmates and me last year. We all got hired AFTER we started ignoring the online applications

The problem is, to whom do you take the application if you're APPLYING for the nurse manager job? That has been my issue the last couple times.

That was a rhetorical question, no need to answer. I've since decided, after my last application, that I really do not want to move outside my current facility. They've treated me VERY well the past two years, and given me lots of opportunities to succeed and advance, so I don't want to go to another hospital network at this point in my career.

Klone--Yes! Be a nurse manager in LD at a place that pays was better than hca then hire me! :-) I really like my job, but the pay sucks!

So, let me get this right. You just print up a bunch of resumes, put on nice clothes and start walking around units looking for nurse managers? Is this even do-able? Did you all have friends working on these units?

TIA

LOL not exactly! in my case, I had done my practicum on the unit that hired me and I did know people. But most of my classmates found out what units were hiring on the hospital job boards, then walked in with a resume without knowing anyone. I actually had plans to start doing that but got hired quickly so I didnt

I'm not trying to pick on you. I've read other posts by you and you seem like a bright and friendly person.

But....

Sorry, I'm having a hard time grasping this.

"Most of your classmates" did this, and got hired? Or, was it like one or two.

And first you said it worked for you, and then you said you had plans to try this but you already got hired on the unit you did your practicum on. Wouldn't most of your classmates have better luck doing what you did?

Having worked in a couple different hospitals where I would often have trouble tracking down my own manager who was in the building the whole time I was, I have a hard time believing this works on a large scale.

And if you did manage to be lucky enough to find one, it seems like it would be about 50/50 at best that they would be receptive to this approach.

I know I would not be.

If I have resumes from experienced nurses, new grads, and present-employee referrels coming in all the time (especially here in Colorado) that I can review and interview during the time I set aside for such things, why would I want to be interrupted unexpectantly during my busy day?

Dude, I went online, found jobs that did not mandate a year experience and had planned to walk in my resume when I got called for an interview from the NM where I did my practicum AFTER walking my resume in there.

Way more than one or two classmates, more like around 20 or 25 of them. One of them walked in a resume at Swedish, posted how she got hired that way and after we all saw it, everyone did it. The computerized system does not seem to work well at all for people with zero experience. Virtually everyone that I graduated with who stayed in Denver and landed a hospital job without having a connection at the hospital they got hired at did this to get hired. Bypassing HR was the only thing that worked for us.

It is interesting to note that the NMs are usually surprised to find out that they are never seeing the applicatios that are placed online by new grads.

PLanning on doing it and having success at it are two different things. I had planned on putting on my scrubs, putting my stethoscope around my neck, taking report, and faking working there until they so how awesome I was! But, alas I got a job somewhere else first.

Walking in your resume to the unit you did your senior practicum on is also different then "cold-calling" in person to a unit you have no relationship with.

Now, granted I obviously don't know how every new grad was hired where I work, or see every person who wonders on my unit. But, having worked in a few different places (including Swedish) in my 4 years, including orienting many new-hires, I have never heard of anyone getting hired the way your classmates did. Nor have I ever had anyone come onto the unit and ask me where to find the NM, except people who had an appointment. And, if they did, there would be about a 25% chance I would be able to locate my NM at any one time.

I find it incredulous that at least 20 people from one graduating class had success by doing what you described. I'm sure this has caught on like wildfire, and that I'll be hearing about it more often!

Are you calling her a liar?

I'm not sure what your point is by arguing with her, or what you are hoping to accomplish?

FWIW, there was a very long, detailed post in the "First Job Search" forum about a year ago from an old/new grad who was having difficulty getting any interviews, so she decided to get creative. She detailed the many steps she did, and much of that included creative ways of figuring out the names of NMs in different departments, then walking in there, asking for them by name, and handing them her resume. After doing that for a few weeks, she had several interviews lined up, and ultimately got a good job as a result. So yes, it IS heard of, people HAVE done it, and it DOES work.

No, I do not think she is a liar. I apologize if that is how it came across. I think maybe she hasn't heard the full story on how each of her classmates got hired.

And, I'm not saying that it would never work. I just don't believe it works on a large scale. The very few examples of that on AN backs me up. I believe there are better ways.

On the other hand, if you are a new grad and go to 10, 20, or 50 NM's with your resume, it only takes one to say yes.

You are right. It is silly to argue. In this instance I guess I'm being immature. Not the first or last time!
