CU Nursing

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

Hi!

I just graduated from University of Colorado-Denver with a psychology degree last spring. I have since moved back home to Chicago and am doing my pre reqs at a local community college although I am still considered a resident in Colorado as well. The plan is to finish next spring (2010) and apply to the nursing program for spring 2011 admissions. What is the admissions process like? How long does it take to hear back and what makes someone a "shoe" in to the program? Can anyone tell me about the program and what to expect?

I've tried getting ahold of someone at CU but haven't heard back at all from anyone.

Thanks!

edit: what are some other programs i can look into in Colroado?

You probably haven't heard back from CU because they are busy right now processing the nursing applications for summer 2010/ spring 2011. Application deadline was 15 November, and we are expected to hear from them sometime in March 2010. Supposably, the number of applications was even higher this year than in the previous years, when (I believe) it used to be app. 10 applicants per spot, so a very competitive (but highly recommended) program. On the website it will tell you that min. GPA is 3.0 to apply, but from what I have heard (unofficially) you might want to have a 3.6 or higher to be competitive, but again, this is unofficially. Your prerequisite GPA plus your GPA from your previous Bachelor (if you apply to the accelerated program) plus your essay will be defining factors. I wonder if you have some advantage if you graduated from CU previously? When you apply for the accelerated program, CU will reserve three options of admissions offer: 1) offer you admissions into the summer start date (June) of the year following application deadline (in our case, summer 2010), 2) offer you admission to the spring start date the year after (in our case, January 2011), or 3) offer you a spot in the traditional BSN program.

Hope that helps!

Hi Jenna,

I have my application in to CU right now but won't find out until March sometime. The application period I applied for is for Summer (June) of 2010 or Spring (Jan) of 2011. I just looked on their website and see they changed it where they have different applications per admission session. So, you would be able to apply for Summer of 2011 by June 15 of next year. They require a 3.0 to apply but the rumor is it's much higher, and requires an excellent essay. The program is VERY competitive. Here is the site for the information http://www.nursing.ucdenver.edu/undergrad/bs.htm

The application can be filled out online and even your application fee can be done online now. Its fairly straightforward process. About being a shoe in.... I wish I knew!! I don't have a previous degree but have a 4.0 in all my pre-reqs and I am worried I won't get in because they base so much on the essay and it may not be a 'match' for them... who knows!?! They are extremely busy this period because of the huge amount of applicants this year and have pushed back the notification date by about a month. I would send them an email, but give them a few days to a week to respond, they're swamped.

As far as other BSN programs in CO; there is Regis U, Denver School of Nursing, Metro (since you have a previous degree)... that's as many as I can think of off the top of my head. Your best bet is to look through the CO section here on allnurses. I have posted other stuff about CU as I have found it out. There are also discussions on DSN and others... its a great resource.

I wish I could help you more.... good luck!!

Are people applying for January 2011 already?? I will be applying directly after my next spring semester before June 15th. I'm starting my essays over winter break and getting all my info ready so I can do the application asap. I've tried getting ahold of someone for literally 6 months. I've left messages and I've never heard back :(

my gpa from my first school is a 3.0 and my GPA from CU is a 3.5. I'm hoping being a CU alum helps me a little, although I don't think if it will hold that much weight. What's the waiting list like? Hopefully I get A's on my pre reqs to be competive!

Thanks for the info One1

has anyone done the Metro nursing program?

Also, A friend from undergrad is doing Denver school of nursing, not so sure of this school. Anyone heard of it/ know about it?

Thanks for the info sand dollar! Hope you get in!! And good luck!

Jennacoh, read through this forum - there is a lot of information about all the schools.

Hi Jenna,

Yes, the CU application date for Spring 2011 has already past. The earliest spot for your application would be for Summer of 2011. There is no wait list at CU, but they have a call list. If you don't get accepted, they *may* offer you a spot on the call list. If they do, you have to return a form letting them know you want to stay on it. You can get a call to start up to the day before classes begin, or so I'm told. If you don't get either, then you have to reapply the following term.

As Dennis88 suggested, read all the relevant threads here... there is plenty of information to keep you busy for a while! :)

Hi there,

You should really research your choices. Denver school of nursing is not accred by nlnac or ccne so if you want to continue your education their credits are only accepted by University of Phoenix, not to mention I have called most major hospitals in denver and they are not hiring nurses from DSON. Other than that, Regis and Metro are another option. I have been accepted to CU and Metro but Metro starts sooner and it is a time thing for me so I decided to attend Metro. I only had a 3.0 GPA but my essay/experience in the medical field was stellar. Good luck lovely.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your experience in the medical field?

Good luck in nursing school!!!

Hi,

I have been conducting HIV research for the last five years so I had interaction with patients, nurses and physicians on quite a few levels. I think it didn't hurt that I am 38, which gives me quite a bit of life experience and I am also married to a physician. So collectively I think that these things really helped. The essay is super important so I sought help from a veteran nurse to help me get my experiences down on paper. I hope you get in soon!

OH, I don't think it hurt that I have been doing the research at CU fitzsimmons campus so I have somewhat of an affiliation with CU. Go to their website and look under jobs for reasearch. I am sure there are a few and maybe it could give you a leg up...just a suggestion. :-)

UCD nursing must be especially competitive, I just got my BA in Integrative Physiology from CU at 21 with a 3.6 cumulative GPA, which is competitive for some DO programs, and they did not accept me. What are you looking for CU denver? At this point, getting into a doctorate program sounds far easier than this.
