I work have worked in the medical field for quite a while and I am also married to a surgeon. I have to say that I personally think that you would be looked upon as an asset to a medical school if you were previously a nurse. My OB-GYN did this exact same route and it made her a better physician and more respectful to nurses and PA's because she had been in their shoes at one time. GO FOR IT! It this is the route you would like to take I think it gives you so much insight and an upper hand because you will have worked in a health care setting and know the ins and outs of what goes on. I think it would be very challenging, however I think you should begin school as soon as possible. If you wait then you may not ever go to school at all. Buck up, know it is going to be rough but it isn't for forever. Education is so important and so are children! So do both. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! Good Luck!

I have to agree with all of the posts, although I think the first two are more appropriate. It isn't mean to tell someone that they have to come up with their own essay answers. The essays are how the admission panels get to know a person, therefore if you are putting down someone else's experience it is a falsehood. I just completed the essays myself and it took quite a while to do so (I got into nursing school. Hooray)!. I recommend getting together with a mentor nurse and telling that person your experiences so that they may help you put it down on paper in a coherent and intellecual manner.

OH, I don't think it hurt that I have been doing the research at CU fitzsimmons campus so I have somewhat of an affiliation with CU. Go to their website and look under jobs for reasearch. I am sure there are a few and maybe it could give you a leg up...just a suggestion. :-)

Hi, I have been conducting HIV research for the last five years so I had interaction with patients, nurses and physicians on quite a few levels. I think it didn't hurt that I am 38, which gives me quite a bit of life experience and I am also married to a physician. So collectively I think that these things really helped. The essay is super important so I sought help from a veteran nurse to help me get my experiences down on paper. I hope you get in soon!

Hi there, You should really research your choices. Denver school of nursing is not accred by nlnac or ccne so if you want to continue your education their credits are only accepted by University of Phoenix, not to mention I have called most major hospitals in denver and they are not hiring nurses from DSON. Other than that, Regis and Metro are another option. I have been accepted to CU and Metro but Metro starts sooner and it is a time thing for me so I decided to attend Metro. I only had a 3.0 GPA but my essay/experience in the medical field was stellar. Good luck lovely.

Hi there, I am not a nurse yet, start school in January. However, I find that this situation can be applied to any profession. I think you should go for it. I think it would be impossible for them to stiff you for a long period and if it were me I would do research on the web about the unit you will be working in so that you don't have to count soley on the "clique nurses" (which, in my opinion is infantile and laughable) for all of the info you will need to succeed. Don't let them scare you....you can do it! BTW, I am married to a surgeon and doctors also have cliques LOL. I just don't understand why you would want to prevent someone from functioning on your team. Wouldn't it be easier to help them so that they could help you in the future? I guess it is lack of logic and more ego based eh? Good Luck!!!!!! Remember, defensiveness and the unwillingness to help is weakness disguised as strength... in any situation.

I have personally spoken to Children's, Denver Health, St. Joes, St. Anthony's, Swedish etc. I too was informed that nurses from DSN WILL NOT be considered for positions due to their accred status. I am not sure why people get so defensive about this information? Makes me think that some of the defensive responses are from actual DSN employees. I am not trying to do anything but save some people major heartache, as I would like the same done for me. I too considered this school and did a lot of research instead of depending on word of mouth. SO I encourage people to call around to the HR departments of places where they wish to work and see if they higher from DSN or learn about their hiring criteria. If you go on websites to hospitals some of them clearly state that you have to be a graduate of an nln or ccne accred school. Again, just trying to be helpful not criticize or tear people down.

I understand your friend got hired at Children's and I think that is great. The hospitals are no longer hiring from DSN, meaning recently they decided they are no longer hiring from DSN. The reason that DSN is full is because it is very difficult to get in anywhere else. I am not disputing the fact that they have a great program. I am simply stating the facts that I have personally found out and trying to save some people time and money. For those who wish to go to DSN, I think that is great. It just wasn't for me, as I want to continue my education and DSN's BSN programs are not accepted in higher learning institutions such as CU and Regis. However, I do believe they have a graduate agreement with Phoenix schools? So anyone attending DSN, good luck! I hope it is everything that your hearts desire! :-)

That sounds perfect Nick. Thank you. As far as the paperwork, I too am worried because I don't know how long the screening takes and we are suppose to be enrolled in classes by Dec 18. At least that is what my email said. I think they just take their time and aren't really concerned with our worries so much. That is a university for you.

Hi Nick, Fb page sounds great. I am in. I did contact metro about the paperwork for the background/drug checks. They assured me with the literal term "no worries" that it would be in the mail in the next couple of weeks. The no worries thing bugged me, as it didn't seem too professional but whatever. Nick and Dennis, what are your last names and I can send you a friend request? Although, I understand if you are a little apprehensive to put your last names up on this board. We could figure something else out if need be.

Oh wow, 6 weeks. Well that should be a good time. LOL I live at Speer and Logan behind the 9 news building. Hopefully I will get some clinicals at Denver Health given I live so close. So if you got into Regis would you drop Metro? I mean even if you had already started at Metro?

I can't imagine we would start clinicals the first semester, afterall I think most would need some pathophys/pharmacology to make any kind of knowledge based decisions. My husband is a surgeon (and some friends of mine currently attend med school) and they didn't start clinicals until well after they had plenty of bio classes. Of course, I am not sure how nursing school works. Maybe, since it is accelerated clinicals need to start asap? Either way it doesn't sound as daunting as I thought it would, which takes some of the stress off! I do wish I could keep my job though, even on a part time basis...for the money of course. I will probably eat my words "doesn't sound daunting" half way through the semester. LOL What part of Denver do you live in? Where do your kids attend daycare/school? Maybe once we got to know each other we could help one another. I know my husband is rarely home, so even in school I will be the primary caregiver to Alice (my babies name). I am actually a single mom that happens to be married. Challenging to say the least. Have you heard back from Regis yet?
