Colorado New Grads- Do you have jobs?

Published

I am graduating in May from UCD and I am curious how recent new grads are fairing in our great state. I am hearing horror stories of people not being able to get jobs and working in waitressing, grocery stores, etc. Who has found a job? Who hasn't? What has worked for you and what hasn't? I am not attached to any one hospital, but would like to stay in the Denver Metro area.

For those who posted in this topic, do you have a job now? If so, how did you get it? how long did it take?

IMO, and in the opinion of people who know more about such things than I do, it will turn around in a few years. Once the economy improves, nurses who came out of retirement (or put off retirement due to the recession) will then retire. Nurses are an aging demographic, and I think there will be a LOT of nurses leaving the workforce in the next 3-5 years.

Not a new grad, but I see that I said this three years ago, and wanted to bump it back. Guess I was wrong, huh??

I'm curious, especially from people posting 3 years ago, and new grads now - who has jobs? Who is hiring? Has things turned around at all?

Got a job through my externship

Three years ago I got a job on a med/surg unit. Not my dream job, but I figured getting the experience would be worth it. I'm still at that same job. It probably took me about 3-6 months after I graduated to get my job. I don't think the market has turned around. Colorado has way too many nursing schools making it hard for new grads to get jobs. I feel it's about who you know at the hospitals that can get you in.

I graduated 2 yrs ago in Dec. Got my first job in Feb.'12, LTC/rehab facility, where I worked for a year, before landing in my current place of work, general surgical unit at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. This January will make a year I've been commuting to WY (from Ft. Collins). Gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Hi! How do you like Cheyenne Regional? I was thinking about applying to their new grad program and commuting as well. I'm a new grad and have been looking since August 2013 and haven't even had an interview yet. Do you have any advice or do you know of anything in FTC?

Thanks!!

I really like CRMC. I don't mind the drive unless it snows, but the hospital will put you up if the highway closes and you have to work the next day. I always keep an overnight bag and extra scrubs in my car. It would be worth a shot to apply to CRMC new grad program. As far at FTC, the hospitals are hard to get into up here, must have experience and it's very competitive. LTC's (where I started) seem to be hiring new grads, check Columbine Health, Good Samaritan Society, or Sava. Good luck!

WY sounds like a good option. I too live in Ft. Collins, and know how hard it is to find a hospital job here for new grads. I wouldn't mind the commute, but it is the bad weather that puts me off. Seems they close the highway from CO to WY several times every winter. And I have 2 little kids that I can't just leave at home alone if I got stuck up there.

I graduated in May, '14 (Univ of Colorado) and found an RN job immediately. Most of my classmate friends have found jobs - some in other states, but most in Denver.

I'm looking to relocate to Cheyenne in the next couple of months. CRMC will be opening a handful of new grad residency positions soon, and I plan to apply. Graduated from an ADN program in New Orleans last month, working toward a BSN. LPN since '13, worked two years in med surg/tele, currently inpatient psych for the past year. Any words of wisdom or current info on CRMC or job market in SE WY/northern CO you guys can share? Thanks so much in advance!
