It every person born in the US had to pass a test (lets say at 18 or 21) to officially become a citizen, most would fail.

Civics and Social studies teaching in schools is terrible.

Even folks with two English speaking American parents and grandparents/cousins/family and friends can barely expound on the basic tenents of US political science.

All the more reason to make citizenship something that means something important--that it is something to be earned, valued, and not taken for granted--all the more reason that we need to do better with our education issues--what we take for granted we de-vallue, and then it gets twisted, becomes not what originally intended, and stolen from us, because if we devalue it, we just don't care enough. I come from immigrants that worked for and valued their citizenship, and I work with immigrants that work for and value theirs. We work hard for what is important to us. And standards and boundaries are not evil words. But finding the way to implement the hard rules, and still stay a compssionate human being--that is hard.

Children born in the US are citizens as a matter of constitutional law. In other words the US constitution defines any child born on US soil (with 2 narrowly drawn exceptions for children of diplomats and military attache's) as an American citizen.

The assumption that children are a burden on society is just wrong. The Children are the basis of our future as a country. Denying education or health care to our own citizens is bad public policy. I frankly don't give a rats behind about the origins of any childs family. I just want to see our society invest in children in a way that sets them up to become fully functioning members of society. The developmental research clearly shows that children who grow up in poverty, without benefit of proper health, vision, dental or educational care are far more likely to grow up to become adults who are clients of the mental health or correctional systems.

This is why are country is in the state it is in now.

We should focus on our own. Like the elderly people who have worked and paid into SS, and now they can't afford prescriptions or run their heater or air-conditioning because they simply don't have the $. You want to help the children just go into the inner city, we have plenty of US CITIZENS in need of help. And as far as the US constitution defines any child born on US soil as an American citizen, it needs to be changed, too many ILLEGAL immigrants abuse it. If they are in the US legally that one thing, but when they cross the bordered and break the law that's different.

I agree completely. The concept of "birthright citizenship" is past its prime, and needs to be revoked. Unless one parent is a LEGAL US CITIZEN, then the child should not be a citizen just by virtue of being born on US soil. Too many illegal immigrant women come here while pregant, or become pregnant a short time later. This is done to obtain benefits for the child that they are now elligible for as US citizen. These "anchor babies", have become a big part of the illegal immigrant debate, and problem.

As the above poster stated, there are plenty of US citizens, who paid into this country for social security, fought in wars to keep this country free, and deserve far more than illegal immigrants, and their anchor babies.

Illegal immigrants should not be elligible for ANY SOCIAL BENEFITS, including education in our public school and college systems, welfare, food stamps, housing, jobs, etc. If we deny these things to illegal immigrants, the "freebies" they are receiving here, and deny them housing in legal and illegal apartments, they will soon find that America is not a bargain to live in. They will begin to "self deport", and go back to where they came from. JMHO, and my NY $0.02.

I know this post is old, by I am very curious by your allegation. Wasn't Princess Di an unrestrained rear passenger s/p MVC @ a high rate of speed, with an ETOH+ driver? Was she not also found unresponsive at the scene? Wasn't she also ETOH+? I would think that all of these questions were MAJOR contributing factors.

What job did they botch?

sorry I didn't respond sooner, just saw your post. Since none of us were there and we get our info from the 'media', my opinion was developed by a doctor they interviewed at the time of the accident. He stated that it was policy (I don't know whoms) that treatment is given on scene. Her treatment 'on scene' lasted 2 hours. So much for window of opportunity! He went on to state that from what he had heard of her injuries---that they were very sustainable. It doesn't look good also that it took the French and the British years to investigate this one accident.

Sorry to burst your reality bubble here, but the 14 th amendment is vague at best and actually meant as a reversal to the Dred Scot decision in the middle of the 19th century. Your interpertation of the amendment that citizenship is not granted to children of diplomats etc. is correct but it also is stated that citizenship shall not be granted to aliens here illegally. Living in California I personally know many (in my case Mexicans) whom not only have one baby but three or more and get benefits for all of them. You see the anchor babies are not only giving them a criteria for staying here but qualify them for welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing etc..I don't think anyone would deny help to ANY sick child----but the illegals have made it a way of life. The amnesty 20 years ago not only did NOT stem the flow it increased it 4X. As for poverty creating criminals-----the reality is that people with money commit crimes all the time, they just don't do the time because they can afford good lawyers. Was Ken Lay a poor undernourished criminal? There is poverty because society is a pyramid, with the wealthy elite at the top and the serfs at the base. You will not legislate or medicate away poverty or ignorance, since they are necessary to maintain the elite. The only difference with this new world order is that Americans are slowly becoming a third world 'country'.

Yeah, and isn't it the stupidest law you ever heard of when they were born here only because their parents broke the immigration law? And of course parents of an American citizen may apply for green cards and later, citizenship, on that basis. Thanks for bringing up that loophole, they definitely need to sew that one shut pronto. The use of kids as a get out of jail free card, what a crying shame.

Well, I think we should just make it a law that in order to be a citizen, one would have to be the child of wealthy land owning citizens. That'd take care of those nasty little Anchor Babies (gotta love that label, eh?). Maybe we could add in a rule that at least one parent must have received a post secondary degree?

And then we won't have to toss a bone to anyone--innocent children be damned.

I say-if your parents haven't done what other people say is right, you don't deserve basic health care and other silly things like protection, stability, or any of those over rated things, that really, should be reserved for those who deserve them-ie you and me (unless you're an illegal. Then just me!).

in case you don't know what immigrants do in this country, the latinos have a word for it--trabajo. they've been mowing the lawns, cleaning the offices, hammering the nails and picking the tomatoes, not to mention all that dish-washing, diaper-changing, meat-packing and poultry-plucking.

...

the only question is how much we owe our undocumented immigrant workers. first, those who do not remain to enjoy the benefits of old age in america will have to be reimbursed for their contributions to medicare and social security, and here i quote the website of the san diego aclu:

undocumented immigrants annually pay an estimated $7 billion more than they take out into social security, and $1.5 billion more into medicare.... a study by the national academy of sciences also found that tax payments generated by immigrants outweighed any costs associated with services used by immigrants.

If the immigrants are paid "under the table" How exactly are they paying into SS. If they have work visas that's different, but the illegal ones are the leaches on our society, and need to be deported.

Which is something we need to change. Many illegals are having children so that they can legally stay here because they have an America citizen to support. This is wrong. If I were in another country, had a child, why on earth would my child be a citizen and entitled to all of that country's benefits??? Makes no sense to me. As usual...I'm sure America is the only place in the world where this works.

There are endless references out there to support birthright citizenship as a constitutional right both within the text of the constitutional amendment AND as a result of each time congress has restated naturalization and citizenship laws. (Every time congress has restated that within a statute it has in effect reaffirmed birthright citizenship.)
