Colon therapy and enemas.

Published

I came across an article the other day that exclaimed that every one of us carry an average of 7-8 pounds of impacted fecal matter within us. Some of the subjects noted within the article had went to a health retreat where there was extensive colon irrigation done. A marble was dispelled from a patient who claimed he had swallowed it as a child and now he was in his mid-forties. Is this possible or is it another medical myth?

colon hydrotherapy? Is there a 900 number"

It would be interesting to take that colon cleanser ad apart. I'm sure they are claiming many, many (dubious) health benefits. I'd like to see what the ingredients are, also.

Here's a colon cleanser plain and simple....colon_hoover.gif

No fuss no muss. ;)

Forgot to add that I think it's alot of hogwash myself.

I took a class on this topic as an elective and I did not care for it. Lots of poopy pics LOL. It validated what you claimed.

Adrianurse, why would we lose our licenses as nurses if we did colon hydrotherapy? I am not informed about any of this. I know of a woman who practices this, and her clients are from a varied social group. She is not a nurse, but is a massage therapist who can no longer practice massage because of a physical condition she has. I heard of one colon hydrotherapist who went to prison after doing a treatment on an 85 year old woman. The 85 year oldwoman subsequently died of a perforated bowel.

Is this limited to certain states? I heard of a patient who claimed she had colon cancer and was sent home to die. She said not only did she start praying, but she went for colon hydrotherapy. She got results in just 6 months after her colon hydrotherapy began. She went back to her doctors who couldn't find her cancer and wondered what she did. She said prior to having cancer, she ate junk food 24 hours a day and was obese. Now she's cured and on health food.

Yeeks! I always thought it should be called go-constantly. As for the sludge theory...well it's probably about as large of a pile as you'd make out of that 7-8 lbs. of impacted fecal matter.

About 10 years ago, I had a physician order a most lovely bowel prep on a schizophrenic lady taking numerous psych meds. It was FLEETS ENEMAS until clear. Needless to say if she'd have let us give them all, she probably wouldn't be clear yet! Did I mention he also sent the surgical permit in the mail to her at the state psych hospital. When she refused the enemas and sugery, he blamed the nurses for not being persuasive enough!

i used to work in a place that did colon hydrotherapy. they had plenty of clients and all paid cash. in alternative medicine they promote the idea of cleaning the toxins out of the body. one way is colon hydrotherapy.

it may sound yucky but the clients were in pretty good health after their treatments. i never did get a chance to see how it is done. it usually lasted about 45 minutes. any one know it is done?

For those who don't want to read the whole thing, here is an excerpt:

The complaint also alleges that Years to Your Life Health Center falsely advertised colonic irrigations as "painless" procedures which provided health benefits including an improved immune system and increased energy, as well as relief from indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, body odor, candida, acne, mucus colitis, gas, food cravings, fatigue, obesity, diverticulosis, bad breath, parasitic infections, and premenstrual syndrome. In 1997, the FDA warned Girouard about safety violations and warned Tiller Mind and Body, Inc. (another defendant) about illegal claims and manufacturing violations.

Colonic irrigation has no rational role in the prevention or treatment of any health problem. The Colon Therapeutics Web site actually states that "there are no proven medical benefits from colonics."

Yikes!

Dear Texasagain,

Thank you for this enlightening article and link....it seems like the safety of these machines has not been established in elderly patients...and prehaps younger groups...thanks again

Almost all spinal cord injured patients have a bowel regimen of some kind regularly. This MAY be an enema, but colonics and that sort of thing are not recommended as a regular program for ANYONE. It can cause chronic overstretching of the colon which may lead to a toxic megacolon.

On a lighter note, did y'all see the 3rd Crocodile Dundee movie? Croc talked to an actor(can't think of his name) that recommended high coffee enemas as the fountain of youth.

Not sure if that was with cream and sugar.
