Collin College Fall 2015 ADN

Published

Hello everyone! I was looking for a thread for Fall 2015 for Collin, and didn't see one, so if there already is one, please share the link. Otherwise, welcome to this thread! I am a pre-nursing student and I am about to take the PSB and put in my application for Fall. Who's with me?

I am super nervous, but so very ready to get going with it.

I believe I had 27 points. There were about 270 qualified applicants, and 60 were selected. Apparently the years before they selected less students (about half, maybe), but now they are building a new health science center that allowed more spots to open up for more students.

Would you mind giving me a breakdown of your points? Do you have any tips or advice for future applicants?

Sure. There are 6 sections that make up the 34 points.

1. I received 1 of 1 point for getting a C or higher for Biology 1406.

2. I received 3 of 3 points for completing A&P 1 and 2, and Microbiology with a C or higher.

3. I received 10 of 10 points for completing the above pre-req courses with a 4.0 GPA.

4. I received 9 of 10 points for having a 3.76 - 3.99 cumulative GPA for classes pertaining to the program.

5. I received 0 of 4 points, because I did not take honors classes.

6. I received 4 of 6 points for my PSB scores.

As you can see, the majority of the points come from GPA. Up to 20 of the 34 possible points. My advice is to get your GPA up as high as possible, and complete as many of the core and pre-req classes as possible. They like to have their ADN students go on and complete their BSN. Which I plan on doing at TWU. Also, completing as much as possible will benefit you while in the program. I am only registered for 9 hours (full time nursing classes) for the fall thanks to completing all my core classes. So, I won't have the added stress of completing those classes while studying for my nursing classes.

Study for the PSB test! The Reading comprehension is fast. You only get 15 minutes to complete that portion of the test. The vocabulary section I was running out of time so I went through and answered the questions by randomly selecting just to complete the section. Be ready, there were only a few words that were in the study book that were actually on the test.

Once again, the PSB is only worth 6 points. Make the grades for your GPA, and retake classes if you have to. It'll be worth it in the end, because the GPA is the most highly weighted in your points score.

You're welcome! I edited my post with more information for you. :)

Here is a link to the points breakdown...

Points Breakdown

This is very helpful, thanks so much, which PSB study guide did you use?

Great! You're welcome! I ordered mine from Collin's bookstore. I think that was the only place I could find it.

Im sorry may sound dumb but where are the classes pertaining to the program for the Cumulative GPA? I been trying to finish my prereqs for a long time as life got in the way with having 3 under 3 kids it makes it hard but hasn't stopped me! I just finished taking ap 1 again over the summer got an A! But I have a question should I retake Micro I got an 89 in the class still considered a B.... or should I take Biology I got a C...... Oh and Do I also take Chemistry?

That's not a dumb question! :) The classes that would go towards the cumulative GPA are:

Science Pre-Reqs

A&P 1 & 2

Microbiology

Cumulative

English Composition I

General Psychology

Lifespan Psychology

Humanities/Fine Arts/Philosophy

You can find this information here: Collin College Associate Degree Nursing Program

If you plan on going on to finish you RN-BSN at TWU or Texas Tech, then you'll want to be "core complete." Which you can't find this information on the website. A professor from TWU came and spoke with us at our nursing orientation.

To be core complete you will need to also complete:

English Composition II

English Literature

Technical Writing (Not 100% sure about this one, but I believe you need it.)

Government 1 & 2

US History 1 & 2

College Algebra

Intro to Sociology/Anthropology

Speech

*Nutrition

*Chemistry w/Lab

*Statistics

*These classes are recommended for the RN-BSN program. Though they say they are just recommended, I would complete them to make you look like that much more stronger of a candidate for the program.

Make sure that once you are in a program that you keep up with the most up-to-date requirements to be core complete. Every so often they like to change things.

Believe me, I know all about how life gets the best of us. Took me about 3 years to finish my pre-reqs and core classes. I still have Chemistry and US History 2 to take. I'll be taking those over next summer.

Congrats on the A in A&P 1! That's a difficult class! For the 89 in Micro... that's a tough one... the higher your GPA the better... ESPECIALLY in those Pre-req science courses... A "B" is still really good, but it's up to you if you want to retake it, and increase your chances... You did only get 1 point off from getting an "A" though. If it were me, I'd retake the class specifically out of being mad at myself for not getting that one point! LOL

Biology isn't counted towards your pre-reqs, which is good in your situation, but you do get 1 point for completing it with a "C" or better. You just need it in order to take A&P and Micro which are heavily weighted towards pre-req points.

Good luck in A&P 2!!!! Remember, there are a LOT of people applying, and the higher your grades the better! You have only 3 classes (A&P 1 & 2, and Micro) that count for a total of 13 points.... So make those classes count!

Points Requirements

I already took a&P 11 in fall while prego with my 3rd baby and got an A.... Ill just redo Micro in the Fall.... I have tooken all those classes except Algebra. Stats, Sociology and Chem, English Lit. Thank you so much for your detailed info it really helps!!

Im a lillte sad though as for the cumulative I have B's except for an A in General Phys:/ oh and Also.... do we have to take one of each for Humanities/finearts /Phil.... or just one of those?

LorenW28 your post is very inspirational. Congratulations and I hope for nothing but the best for you. I've been following this site for over a year and a half and it seems as if people with 4.0's and a 6 on the PSB are the ones that post, so it's good to see a post from someone who has clearly worked hard with good stats share their success story. I will be applying with 26-27 points. I made A's in my prerequisite, a 6 on the PSB and an A in English and B's in gen psychology, life span and humanities. The B's in my co-reqs is whats bringing down my overall points. I am hoping that since I made a 6 on the PSB, A's for my preqs and no repeats I wil be accepted. I also took stats and will be taking Chemistry to be core complete so that I can eventually transfer to TWU or Tech for my RN to BSN. I turned in my application last week and wont hear back for a while (as I am sure you know). How long did it take for you to get your acceptance letter, was it longer than 2 months? Thank you again for sharing and giving people hope.
