Collin College Fall 2015 ADN

Published

Hello everyone! I was looking for a thread for Fall 2015 for Collin, and didn't see one, so if there already is one, please share the link. Otherwise, welcome to this thread! I am a pre-nursing student and I am about to take the PSB and put in my application for Fall. Who's with me?

I am super nervous, but so very ready to get going with it.

You're welcome!

You still have quite a few classes you can take to boost your GPA. A few B's here and there probably won't hurt you that badly. Just work really hard to get A's in those last classes.

As for the Humanities/Finearts/Phil you only need one. I took Music Appreciation for that requirement.

That's just the thing, there aren't any other classes I can take because I've taken them all lol. If for some reason I do not get in this time, I will just retake one of the Humanities/Finearts/Phil to get an A. I am petitioning for my associates degree, now all I need is to get into nursing school, and like you, I will have a lighter load in nursing school because I've taken English, General Psychology, Life Span and Humanities, Statistics and now Chemistry. Did you repeat any of the prerequisites for a higher grade? When did you get your acceptance letter?

Oh I'm sorry, I misread your post. That's good that you've completed them! It'll make nursing school that much more easier for you. I retook several classes. A&P 2 was one of them. Life got in the way and I had to drop it the first time, but retook it the next semester. I took statistics 3 times!!! Hated that class lol... It's my only C, and I was proud to get a C!!! Lol The deadline to apply for the program was at the end of January, and I received my acceptance letter at the end on April. They said we were supposed to get them by the beginning of April, so when I didn't get mine I was upset. I thought I didn't get in. So, when I finally got it, I was completely shocked! :)

Lol just realized this mobile site is not easy to keep up with who is who responding. Lol going forward I'll start using names of who I am responding to. Sorry about my mix up!!!

Hi LorenW28 can you tell me how many people will start in the fall with you (how many applicants Collin accepted)? Do you know if you all will be in the new building? Thank you.

Mylife7, yes, they said about 270 qualified students applied, and 60 students were selected for the fall program. I believe they said they were hoping the new Health Science Center will be opening late Fall then they will start the moving process, but said they may not move us until Spring.

Congratulations on getting accepted in to TWU's Nursing Program. I've been reading you post for a while and I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for nursing. Would you mind answering a few questions for me? I applied for Collin's 2016 Spring class and I want to know what to expect. I understand you did not get accepted into Collin's Nursing program which is shocking (If I got into TWU I too would take their offer over Collins), can you provide me with a break down of your stats with Collin (as indicated below) including over all points you had, were you a Collin County resident and did you have to re-take any of your science classes?

Received ? of 1 point for getting a C or higher for Biology 1406.

Received ? of 3 points for completing A&P 1 and 2, and Microbiology with a C or higher.

Received ? of 10 points for completing the above pre-req courses with a 4.0 GPA.

Received ? of 10 points for having a 3.76 - 3.99 cumulative GPA for classes pertaining to the program.

Received ? of 4 points, because I did not take honors classes

Received ? of 6 points for my PSB scores.

Thank you so much! I have worked so hard to finally get to this point, and I can't help but to be passionate and excited. :)

I actually was accepted into Collin's program. I start in less than a week!!! Ah!!!! Lol I was also accepted into WGU, but I chose Collin due to the high NCLEX pass rate. Plus, WGU only gave a 3.0 GPA since they are on a pass/fail system, and I plan on eventually going into advanced nursing (CRNA) which requires a 3.5 minimum to just apply to some programs. They were the only two programs I applied for.

I did retake some science classes thanks to life getting in the way, and since they were all online classes (which was the devil since you have to stay on top of everything yourself without a professor reminding you of deadlines).

I am a Dallas county resident.

And here were my stats:

1. I received 1 of 1 point for getting a C or higher for Biology 1406.

2. I received 3 of 3 points for completing A&P 1 and 2, and Microbiology with a C or higher.

3. I received 10 of 10 points for completing the above pre-req courses with a 4.0 GPA.

4. I received 9 of 10 points for having a 3.76 - 3.99 cumulative GPA for classes pertaining to the program.

5. I received 0 of 4 points, because I did not take honors classes.

6. I received 4 of 6 points for my PSB scores. (Totally didn't study!)

My deadline to apply was, I believe January 31st, and I did not receive my acceptance letter until the last week of March. We had a mandatory orientation in May where they have a ton of information and had a professor from TWU come and speak to us about their bridge program (which I plan on applying for along with UTA's).

You have to have all your immunizations completed before first day of clinical. Must have medical insurance, and the malpractice is included in with tuition. The books are about $1200 at their bookstore, but you can go pick up the list of books for the entire 2 years, and buy them individually from other sources. I ended up buying my books new for just under $700. I used gettextbooks.com to order mine. They compare all websites that contain the book you are searching for all in one place! Awesome site!!!!

You have to purchase your uniform by a certain deadline before school starts. I believe my uniform was just under $200... If I remember correctly. You buy a skills pack from a certain website for around $300, which you don't see it until you start your labs. They send the packet directly to the school. You have to get a background check done, and wait for a blue card to come in the mail to clear you to start. Only took 2-3 weeks to get. You have to pay for your drug screen ahead of time. They do the drug screen at a later random date and time. I still haven't had mine done, and don't know when it will be done. Don't forget about your stethoscope which for a good one can cost $60-$150ish. I bought the Littman Cardiology III (very highly rated) and got my name and title engraved on it. You want your name engraved on it so a doctor doesn't mistaken yours for theirs. Apparently it's easy to do in clinical, especially during an emergency situation. You'll need mainly white, closed-toed shoes. I bought mine from Famous Footwear. Your student ID will be $2, and will say you're a nursing student and your graduation date on it (which is cool) along with your parking sticker. :)

Ummm I think I covered everything to expect up to day 1... Hope this helps out! I know I was scared, and had no idea what to expect... OH!!!! You will have 290 medical terms and abbreviations to learn before you start. You have a test on the first Thursday of classes... I made eFlashcards to help with studying. Here is the link for those in case your list is the same as mine, and want to get a head start which I highly recommend. You'll get your list in orientation.

Best wishes and good luck!! -L

Thank you very much for all the information, you're always so helpful!

Hi LorenW28! How was your first week of Nursing School? Can you tell me what your hours look like and how many days a week you have class (mon-fri 8-5)? I hope I'm not bugging you, as I am sure you're probably sooooooooo busy. Much success to you.

Hi mylife7 you're not bugging me! It's my pleasure to help out! The first two weeks you go Mon-Thurs 8:30-4:30 with an hour lunch usually at 12:30. After that you go 8:30-3:30ish Monday and Thursday, and 8:30-1:30 on Tues and Wed. Clinical Starts for me October 17, and its on every Wed 7:00-4:00, while the other days remain the same I believe. They're good about giving you breaks here and there so it helps with the long hours. One thing you need to be is organized!!! There are a lot of due dates on random days of the week, and unfortunately at the beginning of the semester things don't work out so well with computers and schedules so you'll have to be sure to be flexible while keeping up with changes. Being organized is one major key to surviving and I've definitely been able to see it first hand after starting.

Hi LorenW28, thank you so much for sharing. I will keep you posted on my journey as well. Letters for the 2016 Spring are expected to go out in the next few weeks and I am filled with so many emotions. If you come across anything else that you might find helpful please share. I hope to keep in touch with you and hear all about the exciting life of a nursing student...I hope to share in the experience as well.

You're welcome and please do! I hope you get a letter and maybe I'll be seeing you on campus. :) The new Health Science Center will be opening up at the end of this semester, and we will be moving over next semester. So you'd be starting off in the new facility! Good luck to you!!!
