College of the Canyons Spring 2016

Published

Hi everyone!

This might be a little too early for a thread like this, but I submitted my online application for the spring at COC and I'm so anxious yet excited!

Anyone else here already go ahead and do that? What's everyone's stats who's applying?

I have been studying for the TEAS since May, and it feels so real now that my application is in!

lets get this thread going :)

1...2...3 not it!! 😂 Lol

Nose goes 🙅🏻🙊

Hopefully we get them earlier but I'm honestly not expecting anything until Friday.

Hi Guys! I am just checking in seeing if you are all staying sane. Clearly you are not! LOL! I was in your shoes for Fall 2014 semester entrance. Good luck to all of you and I look forward to checking back in shortly to find out you ALL got accepted.

Nope, not sane at all, I'm checking my emails way too much lol.

Congrats on getting into your program! If you don't mind, can you share a bit of your experience with us and what we can expect come first semester?

HI! Absolutely I can share. So, I got in to the program Fall 2014. First semester I would say was the hardest for me personally. The content is the easiest, but it was more of a time management thing. For the first 8 weeks, you will do class 3 days a week and then "skills lab" two days a week. The two days you do skills will be your clinical days for the second half of the semester. How COC does it is you will have N112 for first 8 weeks, then if you pass that (which you will, just study) you will move on to N114 for the second half of the semester. N114 you will have theory class, Pharm and two days clinical. First semester has the most practicums. The first semester instructors are AMAZING. They really work hard to prepare us for the remaining semesters. Regardless of your background, go in with an open mind. Nursing is not black or white. Its all about the gray area and critical thinking. If you are used to memorizing things, you will have to find a new way to study. The material is more than memorization. My word of advice is focus on understanding the pathophysiology of every disease/condition they talk about. If you know WHY something is happening, you will know what to look for regarding assessment abnormalities (signs, and symptoms, labs, etc). If you are perfectionist (like me), PLEASE do not freak out if you get a B on an exam. LOL. Its still good! Nursing school throws a TON OF material at you in a short amount of time. I have done better so far in 2nd and 3rd semester than I did in first. I work part time and I also take an additional class during semesters to fulfill BSN requirements. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, so spend time finding out what works for you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

Just realized I didn't do paragraphs, sorry for the huge paragraph. LOL. I am studying for a nursing final as we speak so my mind is mush.

No worries at all :] It was helpful information you provided us regardless of how you laid it out, lol! I would be that person though who freaks out over a B on an exam, haha. But thank you for all of that, it's insightful and also pumps me up with excitement about hopefully starting!

I'm so anxious to just know if we're in or not! But I also don't want to bother the people in the office because they're already so nice and patient with all of us during this entire process, I feel bad if I bother them again in this final stretch! >_>

I know what you mean. But they are pretty good with notifications! If they said between the 12th and 20th, then TRY your best to let it go until then. LOL. I know, I know, it seems impossible. However, I have been in your shoes. :)

Definitely helpful and much appreciated. I understand it's a lot of info at once and time management is key as with anything, but I guess the anxiety of waiting for the email has my mind racing steps ahead of itself.

Oh and thanks for taking the time to write such an in depth response while you're studying yourself! Very considerate 😎

We are going into the Nursing field, we better be willing to help eachother out! This is a unique profession. I have found that MOST students help eachother out and offer support. I hope your classmates are as awesome as mine :) :) :) Back to studying for me, final is tomorrow. I will check back in periodically for your updates!
