Hi everyone!
This might be a little too early for a thread like this, but I submitted my online application for the spring at COC and I'm so anxious yet excited!
Anyone else here already go ahead and do that? What's everyone's stats who's applying?
I have been studying for the TEAS since May, and it feels so real now that my application is in!
lets get this thread going :)
Maybe we can all share a bit of our backgrounds and what made us want to become nurses to help pass the time.
I'll start...
Ive always wanted to help people, and build a career around it. I became an EMT in 2011 shortly after my son was born. I had no interest in becoming a nurse at all, and in fact I wanted to be a cop (LASD or LAPD) and I figured EMS would provide a strong background and make me a favorable candidate. But once I began working with my patients, I found myself wishing I could do more for them outside of a simple transfer. Watching and working with registered nurses showed me a side of healthcare I hadn't seen before. I found myself learning more from the nurses I worked with and doing my best to apply it to my patients whenever I could. I really respected the caring nature coupled with the intelligence and responsibility of nursing and it immediately became something I wanted to become a part of.
Feel free to share your story if you'd like 😊
Ah that's an awesome reason to go this route :)
EMT work is never easy, I did that back in 2012 and I enjoyed it but it was definitely rough to manage while being in school too..which brings me to - I started my undergrad back in Chicago studying neuroscience. I wanted to do research and lab work as my end goal, and I got all the way to my 3rd year at the university and I started doing ABA therapy (applied behavioral analysis) with kids who had autism. I worked with a broad range of them on the spectrum and there were many times where I was more than just working with them, but I was also care giving for them. Helping the ones who weren't capable of feeding and bathroom stuff themselves, med pass, etc. and I found that I enjoyed this more than any research I did. Come the beginning of my 4th year, I switched everything to nursing (which was a lot because the pre reqs are a lot different than neuro lol) and I knew then I wanted hands on patient care (:
Does anyone actually attend COC? I can't remember haha, but a couple of us found out we were in because they added "Nursing orientation" as a class to our blackboard accounts before we got the official email. Side note though that they add alternates to blackboard too.
I saw that in the old forum! Unfortunately I do not attend so I'm just anxiously awaiting the email. I don't know about the others on here either ):
