College Algebra Fall 2007

Published

Is anyone else taking College Algebra this fall? I thought that if there were several of us we could start a sticky. I always notice a lot of stickies for science classes but not so many for math. Math is definitely a tough subject for me so it would be nice to have some support.

I start August 27. Anyone else???

My class is going good. After this class about probability, there's only one chapter left! Last week we did consumer math, which I thought was pretty hard, since I have no background whatsoever in this field of math, I still got a B and it didn't lower my A average, so at least that's good! :) I feel really confident about probability since it was probably my favorite math subject in HS, after statistics - which is coming the week after that! :D

Well, I am six weeks into my algebra class. On my first test, I had 83%:o. But, I did a mistake and did not practice and did not do any assigned homework until the day before that first test. No wonder I didn't do so well. We had second test last Monday and I am expecting results via email. I think I did well, but who knows. Basically, we have a test after each chapter. I promised myself to do all my homework on time and I have been doing it in my car during lunch hour . So far so good.

I hope you take this lesson to heart and don't carry that bad habit into other courses. You'll never live up to your academic potential without putting in the effort.

You certainly don't want to be a nurse who's trying to do the bare minimum you can to get by, do you? Of course not.

I'm pleased for you that you learned your lesson without having an F on a test or an F in a class.

Good wishes to you for the results that you're awaiting.

I've got a friend who lives down the street who's taking college algebra right now. I've been tutoring him a bit off and on (basically, he just stops by when he has questions and we go over stuff). He really struggles with it because he had a traumatic brain injury about 3 years ago and his thinking is somewhat muddled now.

What's frustrating is that the answers in the back of the book are often incorrect. Fortunately, I know the stuff well and can tell when the book is wrong but he cannot and he gets very rattled. When I show him how to do it, it takes some work to snap him out of it and get him back on track.

It's sooooo frustrating that a $100 text book has so many errors in the answer key. I feel very badly for the students who are struggling because they may be doing the problem correct initially but then head off on a tangent when the book tells them they're wrong.

You'd think for the price of the books that they'd do a better job proofing them!!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I released that myself and I am happy to say that I got 97 on my second test.

Good for you, Glina. (Pat on the back)

Keep up the good work and the outstanding results!!

Soo just had our second test yesterday....I hope I did good! I couldnt figure out 2 questions...

One was a word problem about mixing......but there were 2 variables which through me off! Everything else was good...plotting, graphing...I studied and did so many problems before...but the wording on the test was different...so i hope I understoof it correctly! lol

Ok...sooo got my algebra test back...I got an 88!!! I'm SOOO happy with that! It was the second highest in the class. There was only 1 A, 2B's and the rest C's, D's and F's! Why come to class if you're not gonna study??

So...I did the problems correctly, but I switched the numbers. For ex, in this word problem, I put x-117, but it was 117-X! So if I did that...it would've been right! And some silly mistakes like...I plotted wrong...(0, 2), when it was supposed to be (2,0)!

So I just raised my grade from a C to a B...I'm gonna shoot for an A! It can only get better from here!!!

I feel kinda bad... I got a 94 on my first test and everything was fine and dandy and a lot of people started not coming to class because it was easy. Like this stuff is what we learned in high school so it wasnt bad.

Well I basically didnt come to math class for two weeks and I realized that I didnt know ANYTHING about one part of the chapter which was matrices (the ONE thing my algebra teacher in hs skipped) So I took the test on Monday and I'm totally hoping for a C!!!

I'm going to start coming to class now =(

I don't mean to be rude....but why are you even in the class if you didn't plan on coming?? You know I havent been in school in 7yrs...and I study my butt off just to get a B in my math class!! I wish I was lucky enough to not come to class and still score an A.....

I'm the person thats in the math lab before class, and with a tutor after...and I'm NOT a slow learner...I just choose to work hard!

So yeah....maybe you should come to class....that's what teachers are for!

Yeah I started coming lol. Well the next two chapters that we're doing is just factoring polynomial functions and doing rational expressions, so I should be fine =)

And I wasn't coming to class because I know all this stuff already from Algebra 2 that I took my sophomore year in high school (three years ago), but I just had a problem with the matrices.

What I cant wait for is Stats! I'm able to take it after I finish this class. I took half a year of AP stats last year and it was easy and fun! =)

hi im a newbee here, just wanna join the forum... i had just finished my algebra class last week and im so happy im over it  though i have to be left for 1 sem by my classmates since i became an irregular student after failing this subject when i was still in my freshman year:down:, and just early this school year, i took up this subject again and walah... im finished... hehehe:balloons: though i know my grades is still in the icu rum, having a shock... hahaha...
