Is anyone else taking College Algebra this fall? I thought that if there were several of us we could start a sticky. I always notice a lot of stickies for science classes but not so many for math. Math is definitely a tough subject for me so it would be nice to have some support.
I start August 27. Anyone else???
OK guys, I took College Algebra in Summer II. I got an A. I'm 37, work 30hr a week, and have'nt had math since 1987. My advise: If your school offers a math lab, GO and get tutoring at least once a week. It helps if you don't understand something if someone other than your instructor explains it to you again. Also, when your given assignments for home, DO THEM. They will help drill the formulas into your head. I was so scared, but if I can pass in 6 weeks, you can pass in 15. Good luck to everyone, you'll do fine.
I hated this class. I took it about 6 years ago and it took 2x just to pass it. Thank God I do not have to take it again!! But, next quarter I do have to take Stats. I am getting mixed results on the class. Either people get it or they don't. Well good luck and I wish I could help anyone who needed it, but Math is not my subject!!
Take care.

I found this website: http://www.mathwizz.com/fractions/help/help2.htm that seems to have a pretty easy formula for finding the LCD. I tried on a couple of problems and it seems to work. You'd just have to remember the steps. Or, on www.mathxp.com, there is a pdf book called Algebra Demystified. It has step by step instructions on factoring to find the LCD and has lots of practice problems. Can you use a calculator for computation? If so, get the TI-30XII, it does fractions! (cost less than $20.00) I still use it for calculations even tho' I also use a graphing calculator. I look a right geek with the both of them laid out on my desk!!!

Yay...it's sticky!!
Thanks for the links..I'll check them out later on!
So last week I went to see my math teacher...I drove to school on my day off to ask for help..and I still didn't get it! So afterwards I RAN to the learning center at school and now I have a math tutor every Wed for the whole semester!! One on one...yay!
So....I kinda get it...if the denominator is small enough, I can do it, but if it's like this huge number...I stumble?
And he won't allow graphing calculators...only scientific ones, which I just got....still helpful though!
Soooo...I'll let ya know how it goes with the tutor! I'm really excited!!
Good luck Serendipity!!!!
Well my first class was today... ugh! All my professor did for 50 WHOLE MINUTES was go over the syllabus. That's it. And I found out I'm not allowed to use a calculator except for the one that's on the computer that we take tests and quizzes on. Ugh. But my professor seemed very willing to help. And there's a math help center on campus if I absolutely need it. I had a bio class today too which was great!
Hope everyone else is doing well in their classes. I can't wait until I actually start practicing problems! I'm nervous but very excited!
Well, today was my second class and we actually started working on math today. I was pleasantly surprised. My professor is excellent and I understood everything we discussed today! I was blown away... I couldn't believe it. I guess I just never had anyone sit down and explain to me how certain things in math were done... that's why I've had so much trouble with it in the past. But she explained everything really well and like I said I understood it all! And the best part is she said that was the hardest stuff we will be doing in the class!!! Of course, that is a matter of opinion so I'm trying not to get my hopes up but I really hope that this is the hardest stuff we have to do. But basically I'm just generally excited for my classes now. This was the class I was most intimidated by, and while the material we are covering is far from easy, its completely doable! I'm just glad I got off to a good start! Hopefully everyone else will have as good of luck as I did!
Hi everyone! I'm taking college algebra this fall, and microbiology too (yeah, I know). I haven't had algebra since 1996, so trust me when I say, I am soooo nervous. I ended up with a C in the class the first time around, that was with little to no effort in attempting to understand what was goin on. So, since my study habits are way better now, I expect to do great in this class (crossing my fingers). My class started yesterday and we're diving right in to Chapter 2 tomorrow (skipping Chapter 1 and a review of basic concepts of algebra). I'm so scared, but we have tutors and a help lab that will help me tremendously. I wish everyone luck this semester:)
Hey everyone..well today was my first day with a tutor, and our class also already entered chapter 2! Which are things I've never learned in HS! Sooo....the tutor helped, but now I'm having trouble with adding and sub. integers..hahaha I think I get the most part of it, but sometimes I'll add something instead of subtract, or put the wrong sign in front...I just think I think too deep into it! lol
So first test in 2 weeks...I told the tutor I expect to get an A...jokingly of course! But I'm really excited! I really enjoy math if I know what to do! lol

I'm having trouble understanding the trouble that you're having. Could you post a problem?

Hey Sammygrl, did you figure out a way to find the LCD?
Peace,
