CNA job options for a college nursing student?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hey all,

I am just finishing up my clinicals for my CNA class at a local nursing home. I have determined that LTC is not really the place I want to work in. I would much rather work in a hospital/pediatric hospital setting.

I start college this fall, so getting a job this summer does not seem promising, and I understand that most places will not hire for summer jobs only. I was thinking to look for a CNA job that is PRN at a local hospital, but would that be hard with no other experience as a CNA? I am just kind of lost right now and could use some advice on job options that would fit me.

Thank you!

It's actually pretty difficult to get a CNA job at a hospital without prior experience. I have 3 years of experience and 5 years of being certified and I'm STILL having a hard time getting a hospital position.

Definitely apply, because you never know, but don't give up your LTC position. Even if you are looked at for a hospital position, their hiring processes are usually pretty lengthy.

It can be difficult to get on at a hospital without experience; getting experience in a LTC will help build skills and efficiency. I had to get two years LTC experience under my belt before I felt like I had a chance at working in our local hospital.

If you can drive, I would look into Home Health. You go to a patient's house and take care of them. It may be an easier job ot get into than going into a hospital and would give you personal communication skills.

I've worked in LTC Memory Care & Skilled Nursing prior to landing my job in the ICU at a very renowned Pediatric Hospital. I am also a young college student (21), 99% of hospitals won't even consider your application without prior experience. You can be the best worker around with the best referrences but unless your resume shows significant experience your application will almost immediately be glanced over, i went through this at one point as well. With age and youth against us having skilled nursing experience is almost a must unless you have worked in your field of nursing for 2 or more years.

I agree with the above. Hospitals can afford to be a little more picky then ltc. They want that experience however If you are already accepted into a nursing program that will definately help you.
