C'Mon Now!

Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

Kid: My tooth really hurts and it's loose. I'm worried it's not a baby tooth.

Me: Did you bump it into something?

Kid: I bit down on a jawbreaker about 3 days ago?

Me: Did you tell your mom?

Kid: Yeah, but she's not really into teeth. And my dad is always on the phone or paying bills.

(I happen to know her parents well. They are insane helicopter parents)

Me: Ummmmm...I honestly don't know if that's a baby tooth or not. I wasn't present for your toddlerhood. I can put some Orajel on it for the pain since it's not super loose but I think you need to talk to your mom about it again after school today.

Kid: Well, I guess so.

I had a child walk in AT DISMISSAL TIME looking happy and well. I asked, "what's the matter?" She said, "my lips are dry." Mind you they weren't overtly chapped, irritated, or bleeding. I gave her Vaseline to apply but my heart was screaming "why?"

And I had two children come in thirty minutes after dismissal from an after school club because another student put slime in their hair. I know we ALL get and deal with visits like this but I couldn't help but look at teacher and say, "what am I supposed to do for them? This is not a health problem," before having them go back and calling Mom. I was waiting to get backlash because I never complain about anything and felt bad to take a long day out on the situation but I'm not really even supposed to see students from after school clubs and had an important and complicated phone call to make to a doctor :oldman: we all do it but it's hard to deal with such mundaneness in one moment and then put on big nurse pants for serious medical conversations the next.

Arrggghhh!!! I had a kid come by to tell me her lips hurt yesterday and I had such a Napoleon Dynamite moment!

My lips are killing me. Gah!!

Yesterday they HELD A BUS for a student because he was really, really, really hurt and NEEDED to see the nurse...his foot was sore...since last Friday. They held a freaking bus for a 5 day old sore foot. I can't even, C'Mon Now!

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!

Just had this exchange with one of the junior high kids with diabetes.

Me: What's your blood sugar?

Him: 288 (This is not unusual for this kiddo- he is not the most compliant diabetic.)

Me: OK- what's your pump telling you to do?

Him: I have xx active and it's giving me xx.

Me: OK . Are you planning on having a snack? (I know that's not the best idea with a BG that high, but I'd rather he tell me, then I make sure he covers for it).

Him: Depends on what I have in here. I *am* hungry. Aw yeah!!!

Me: HOLD UP!!! Do you think a snack of pure sugar is a good idea when your blood sugar is in the 280s?

Him: Uhhhhhh. Probably not.

Me: Also, do you think mom might have thrown those Smarties in your bag in case you ever have a LOW blood sugar?

Him: *pause* Oh yeah. I didn't think of that. I guess I won't have a snack right now then.

Me: Good choice. Drink 2 water bottles before you leave school!!!!

Likely teacher did and he was bouncing off the walls. Student is a FF with me and I acknowledge his need for a break, but seriously in the last ten minutes of the school day?? Nope, nope, nope. Say no. I've done when I taught this student in health during the same class period the year before.

Mr. Poodles is a teacher. He and a group of friends have an agreement that if a kid is overly obnoxious and they just need a break from them they will send them on a wild goose chase for a certain book that doesn't exist. They will send the kid around the school for about 10 minutes I think it's great.

We have one that runs errands a lot! There is a stack of folders with official looking paperwork in each, he'll bring one to the office, take one to a different teacher, who then sends him to another teacher, then maybe back to the office, and so on until he's chill enough to be in class

Does anyone else get a lot of "omg, I didn't see him there and he bumped into my elbow, he says he's ok but can you please just check him??? thank you!!!" I think it's kind of sweet though also "how fragile do you think they are?" I guess they probably worry that the child will go home and tell their parent what happened in an unfavorable way. ("My teacher's arm hit/smashed/hurt my head")

Yesterday I had an 8th grader come to the clinic complaining that outside at recess his hands turned bright pink, with a little purple. It's 20 degrees after wind chill. Your hands are just cold, they will return to normal after being inside a while. "But they are so red, are you sure"

reassure x 6 before he goes to class.

Yup.

I mean, I don't see this a lot because mine are older but Yup. Have the nurse check you out.

Mine are all "he says he fell down the stairs/she says she walked into a wall while she was texting in the hall..."

Reminds me of the child who told me he was "fainting a lot" because of the wind. (Showed me a staggering backwards movement, granted this child was in kindergarten not 8th grade!)

I constantly get a complaint like, "my stomach is hurting," or "my head is hurting," etc..

When I ask how long this issue has been going on they'll say, "since math" or "it started when I was leaving recess" as if I have every student schedule memorized and I know what time of day they have math class or when they went to recess. I always get a little exasperated at this point & cut them off saying, "child, I have no idea when you had your math lesson. I need a rough estimate of when that was!"
