Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm almost 32 and just about finished my first quarter back. I will have 9 more pre reqs to take before I can apply for the program. I would love to chat with others and cheer each other on along the way. OH, and does anyone else think English 101 is kinda hard?! And why the hell does it have to be one of the 4 classes that count at my school? I'm going crazy!

Hi! I am 36 with to kids (2 and 4). I graduated with a degree in psychology years ago, but have never really done anything with it. I started back last summer and will finish my pre reqs this summer. I'm taking Micro and stats and I am very nervous. Planning to apply to an ADN program for spring 2014. I'm taking the entrance exam in about a month.

Specializes in Oncology/hematology.

CT Pixie beat me by a year. I'm 43 and just finished my first year of my ADN program Monday. I dropped out of college my first semester in 1988 because I just didn't know what I wanted. Then, I became a personal trainer, then a stay at home mom, and, when my son got old enough, I sat down to think about what I wanted out of a career. Nursing was the right answer. Now that I've been in nursing school for a year, I'm more sure than ever. Next summer, I will finish up all my prereqs for the BSN bridge, and get enrolled by the fall semester, I hope. But, I wanted to start working as soon as possible, and figure that, as long as I'm taking the BSN classes, hospitals should still find me hireable (sp?) with only an ADN.

Good luck to everyone. We all have an advantage over the youngsters. We are pretty focused and driven, and it shows in my class.

Hello Everyone! I'm starting my BSN program on Sept 2 and I'm 31 years old. I think this a wonderful thread to keep the 30+ encouraged. I see some of you are doing the Associate degree route. I'm not sure what state your in but I'm in Arizona and most of the hospitals out here are not hiring you if you don't have a bachelors degree. Just a word of advice look more into the hospitals or clinics of your choice before you make a decision.[/quote']

I'm in Oklahoma, and ADNs are still hired here. I have sought advice from nursing friends who work at local hospitals to be sure. My hubby is also 34, and going back to school for nursing. However, he works 60 hours/week, so he can't go full time until I'm employed. My goal after graduating, and employment, is to obtain my BSN.

I am 36 years old and have three kids (10 8 and 5). I have been selected to move onto the interview stage, and as long as I pass my HESI exam, I will be starting my BSN program the end of September. This summer will be my 7th semester back in college, and my program is 21 months! I am really hoping that I am not the "old" one of the class.....[/quote']

I know how you feel, worrying about your age. I have actually had a few 40 somethings, in some of my pre-req classes, who are going for nursing as well. Good luck on your Hesi! It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Looks like I'm the 'winner' in terms of who is the oldest on this post. haha.

I know this is a pre-nursing thread to meet, encourage and cheer on other 30+ students, I just wanted to send my well wishes to you all.

I started LPN school a few months before turning 38, graduated a few months after turing 39. I worked for a few years as I took my pre-reqs for LPN to RN bridge.

I just turned 44 and will graduate RN school on Friday!

I just wanted to pop in and wish you all the best.

Thank you for the encouragement! :)

I'm 32, single Mom to two kiddos (4 and 2.5). I started pre-reqs a year ago, part time while working full time. I'm taking the leap to full time student this fall to finish the last of my pre-reqs over fall/spring semester in hopes of starting the nursing program summer 2014. I'm in PA. Oh, and I'm going for the BSN, since my end goal is to move on to get my masters in midwifery.

Specializes in Endocrinology, hopefully.

~Melissa~ what online bridge program will be you be doing? Even though I have two years to plan mine, it's never to early to start looking for options!

Well, I had originally planned to do the online program through the University of Alabama's Capstone College of Nursing, just because I always wanted to go there and I would get a kick out of saying I graduated from 'Bama. But, some will depend on how much time and expense that will add to my education-- it might be more time and cost effective to do the RN-MSN bridge through the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ultimately, my goal is to be a pediatric endocrinology nurse practitioner-- my daughter is a type 1 diabetic and she was the catalyst for me getting off of my butt becoming a nurse.

I'm 37 and just finished pre-reqs this semester. I took one nursing class at the same time, and I'm thrilled to say that it completely reaffirmed my instinct that nursing is for me! I won't technically be a pre-nursing student come this fall, but I'm very glad to have an older student support thread!

Great to see this thread! I am, ah hem, 40, starting my pre-req's in a few weeks. I have a BA in Graphic Design already. I am a mom of two kid (10 and 8). I am taking a refresher Cellular Bio class in May. I plan to take one class a semester, so it will be a long time before I actually apply to nursing school. I am super nervous about being able to memorize all this science, I am an artist so this will really stretch my mind. Looking fwd to the challenge and plan to take this very seriously. BTW, I LOVED ENG 101 and all the ENG classes.

Specializes in Hospitalist Medicine.

I'm 43, just finished my pre-reqs last semester and was accepted into the nursing program! I start nursing school this fall. There are quite a few students my age and older in our program! Yes, sometimes it's strange being older than everyone in the room, but at the end of the day, age doesn't matter. Your dedication, hard work and perseverance matter!

Go for it!!!!

I had always wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but had to put my aspirations on hold getting married in my early 20s, having kids, etc. I was laid off from a 17 year career last year and that was the impetus for me to go pursue my dream. It's been the best decision I've ever made. I'm so happy and I just know I'm doing the right thing. I love it!!!

I am 49, have four kids and am waiting for a yay or nay letter this month. I started working on prerequisites a few years ago, when all kinds of hold ups happened. I persevered and hopefully the pay off will come soon.

Now I need to go back to preparing last two finals in the next few days.

Specializes in PICU.
