Cleveland State Universtiy Program

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi all,

It's my first time here~

I am a pre-nursing student in another state and planning to transfer to CSU. Just wanna know more about the basic BSN program of CSU: Is it hard to get in the program? How about the job market for new graduates? Please share more ideas about CSU and Cleveland with me:)

Thanks~

...any idea?

I don't believe there are any students that post here that are attending or have attended CSU. The best I can do is link to CSU's school of nursing. http://www.csuohio.edu/nursing/ but you probably already have viewed all of that.

Really??? why not? because the program is small or...?

Thank you anyway!

they probably just do not know about allnurses.com.

I have some friends that go to CSU. can't really tell you about the difficulty of the program but they like it. CSU also collaborates with the Cleveland Clinic and does a nurse extern program. That program is also available to non-CSU students but CSU students have priority. you work at the Cleveland Clinic in three rotations while attending the CSU nursing program. For your first year, you work as a unit secretary. For your second year, you work as a PCNA, or patient care nursing assistant, basically a glorified nurses' aide...I used to work there as one, it was all of your basic care stuff + we were allowed to do blood sugars, d/c foleys/IVs and do simple non-sterile dressing changes. I worked on a telemetry floor so we also hooked up newly admitted patients to the monitors. the CC also offers a PCT or patient care tech position which is the same as a PCNA but you can insert foleys and draw blood. There were some PCTs in my class, but I cannot tell you if any of them were CSU students. The students I knew from CSU were PCNAs.

For your third and final year, you work as a nurse extern. You basically do everything an RN does under their supervision except for pass meds (including assessments!) I have some friends who worked as NE's (who were not CSU students) and they absolutely LOVED it. they have a semester-long program that is 15 weeks and an 8-week-long summer session that are both full-time or part-time, I believe. After completing the program you can continue to work as an NE either full-time, part-time or PRN.

Now this was like 2 years ago when I still worked at the Cleveland Clinic so their NE program might have changed a little, or they might not offer it anymore. I cannot find information on the CC website about it anymore or the CSU School of Nursing webpage, but it still wouldn't hurt to inquire.

Thank you very much! Your information helps a lot!

hello bamboo...ur in luck i am currently in the program!...i would have to say study hard in your prereq's because you should shoot for a 3.4 or 3.5 prereq gpa to get in the program...some ppl hav gotten in with less as low as 3.1 or 3.2...you need two references, a resume, and if u meet all criteria then they will call you in for an interview...it is a group interview and takes almost 2 hr...you hav to do a written essay right after the interview...they accept 80 per yr in the basic program...hard isnt the word to use, it is just extrememly time consuming...if you work full time expect that to be cut in half if u want to succeed in the program (my opinion)...you do clinicals at the cle clinic, university hosipitals, metro, st. vincent, fairview, and a few others..it is a great program to get into but be prepared to work hard

hello johnjames, thank you very much for your information. I will try my best to get into this program.

Good luck and enjoy your study in this program! :)

I am stoked. I got a letter today indicating that I have been accepted to the nursing program at CSU. I have to call them Monday to make sure I am reading this correctly but it sure sounds like I have been accepted without the interview or other business. I have a 3.6 right now. I can't wait!

John, what year are you in and when are you graduating?

are there any facebook groups that I can join? what can you tell me about the professors and just the day to day grind?

I do not have an RN and will start next Fall for a 3 year BSN track. What can I expect? I know the nightmares of Tri-C's nursing program and hope that CSU isnt much of the same. Tell me everything - good and BAD!

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while this site is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
