CLEP exams and Excelsior

Published

I have no prior credits besides being an LPN. I want to CLEP what ever I can before I officially enroll. I submitted my application and I know I need everything meaning all the pre-reqs but the admissions counselor was not clear on what I can CLEP. I just received the letter stating which courses I need which I already knew. She kept telling me I can enroll and take the Uexcel exams etc. She kept redirecting my question to enrolling and taking exams or taking their online courses. I could not get a straight answer. If you have recently clepted any courses could you shed some light on which ones I can? I'm sure this is asked alot so thank you for your time in replying...again!

Blessings!

Hi PurpleViolet... Not sure if you have already read this, but I wanted to send you the link, since it does cover CLEP and also the pros and cons of enrolling sooner or later. TONS of good info, by our lovely LunahRN! Good luck to you!! Applying is the first step. I completed my pre-reqs (mostly) last summer and enrolled 9/27/12. So far I have completed Micro (my last pre-req) and 3 Nursing Exams... 4th one scheduled by the end of July.

Welcome to the crazy journey! :roflmao:

If what EC says you need is available as a CLEP exam, then you can CLEP it. If you enroll first, then I believe you will have to get EC's permission to meet any requirement outside of the college because you will then be an Excelsior College student and subject to their rules AND some colleges as well as EC may not accept CLEP versions of certain subjects.

If you are enrolled then yes you need advisor approval. Most are approved, like sociology & human growth & development for developmental psych

Hi there Purple Violet, I was wondering if you started to CLEP your pre-reqs for Excelsior? I am looking to do the same, but I too can't get a direct answer from the advisors? I just wanted to know how your experience with CLEP for Excelsior was going? TIA :cat:

Excelsior College | National exams for credit - check this link for EC equivalent for clep, dsst, uexcel - under Clep Exams you can download the student guide that tells what exams are equivalent to what EC course

Hi FancyLexLPN,

Yes I actually just took my first clep exam last month and passed. I am now studying for my 2nd one. :) I'm on my way. Slow but steady...

Sometimes if you haven't actually enrolled, you won't be able to get a good answer from advisors about whether or not a CLEP will be accepted for credit. Enrolled students can get a definitive answer and should get the permission in writing before taking a CLEP. Unless you're enrolled, you're subject to whatever curriculum changes may occur before you actually enroll, and this includes EC no longer accepting certain CLEPs for credit. It's been a while since they made any changes to CLEP acceptance, so you should be fine in general. No guarantees until you're enrolled, though. But as you know, the sooner you enroll, the sooner you'll have to pay an annual fee! It's a gamble.

They do have a page that lets you know what clep uexcel or dsst exams are excepted and what the equivalent courses are in the students guide to credit by examination for excelsior college. I think I googled excelsior clep and found the page.
