Class of 2015

Published

Congrats to all those that are accepted and will be the class of 2015. I thought it would be nice to have our own thread where we can support each other along our journey. Mine is an ADN program, but I know some will be BSN as well.

With all that aside has anyone had their nursing orientation yet? How was it? What are some of the costs you have to dish out? Did it finally sink in that you will be starting nursing school soon?

Mine isn't until May 29th 9a-3p. I do know that our tops will be white and our bottoms will be green. I also know we are required to have an iPad which is included in our financial aid. I also know I have to pay $66.00 just for the drug test. The program pays for our in state CORI/SORI but I had to pay for my out of state one which was $31.00. I just payed for that today. We will be required to buy the books, stethoscope, name pin, uniforms, warm up jacket, lab coat, and more. So exciting. We will also schedule our classes on orientation day.

Lets get to know each other so we can support each other :)

If anyone was wondering my kids ages are 9, 8, 7, 3 1/2, and 1 1/2. Their dad is very supportive and knows that my job for the next 2 years is working and school. He said he will do everything, cook, clean, laundry. I feel blessed for that. I was accepted for 2 scholarships which I had a ceremony for it on Thursday May 23rd. It was so sweet when they called my name and I heard the 2 scholarships I was getting and they stated that I was a mom to 5 kids, a CNA, and a nursing student :)

Is there a certain area that y'all want to work in when you graduate?? I'm wanting to be a NICU nurse!

I'm most interested in ICU. But, then again, I like OR. I forsee changing my mind often.

I didn't think that the 150.00 was too bad lol. I looked at it like the 150.00 also includes the criminal / background check in addition to the drug screen, so it's kinda a two for one deal. But I do wish we had orientation sooner (it isn't until 8/21 and classes start 8/22) so that I could have an idea of what all I need. Thank you MommaTy for starting this thread.

My program starts the end of August with orientation the week before. I'm so happy to be at this point. Thanks for starting this thread.

I start my nursing program in August!! My orientation is a few days before class starts. ? I wish it was sooner. I am married with a two year old. I work part time right now but will not work during school. I very fortune that I can do that. My hats off to all the women who are doing it all!! Congrats to everyone!!

Your welcome :) My school pays for the in state CORI/SORI. I have to pay for the out of state one because I lived in Arizona. So I already paid for that, it was 31.00. But, now I'm dreading the costs of books, uniforms, and all that :( I got 2 scholarships but I can't get the money until the add drop period is over. Which I believe is the 1st week or 2 of school. I need the money before to pay for that stuff.

Question how much was everyone's books? I wont know until Wednesday at my orientation. Good thing they said you use them the whole program though. I wonder if they will be iPad books because we are required to have an iPad.

Thank you MommaTy!! Let us know how orientation goes!

We had 19 books, but I already had 4 of them from taking Pharmacology earlier. So, I purchased the remaining 15 from Amazon.com and got them all for $756. If I had bought them at the college book store they would have run me close to $1,500! So, it was definitely worth it to get them off Amazon. They sent an e-mail to confirm they're arriving tomorrow. One of the books weighs nearly 20 pounds!

I searched for each book by ISBN in order to sure I had the correct edition/publisher. Luckily, we'll use many of these books throughout the entire 2 years in the program. So, the cost will offset in later semesters.

Holy smokes, that is a huge difference. The school bookstore is a rip off. I know I get a book store voucher, so I guess I will get as many books as I can at the school and the rest I will def get off amazon. The only other problem is our school tends to wait last minute to post what books are for the semester. (I think it is because they want you to only get them at the school store). Hopefully at my orientation I can ask them for a book list if they don't already give one so I can get my books slowly before September 3rd.

I'm curious though if they will have books on the iPad that we are required to have. Which says something about 32 gigs, iso 6, some type of special chip, and retina display. I don't want to carry 20 lbs of 1 book.

You should be able to find e-text versions of many of the books. Most publishers are now doing this. I know the school book store offers an e-text version of our main nursing book. Hopefully you'll be able to get them all on the iPad. That should really cut down on the cost!

As far as 20 lbs. of one book: I bought a book bag with wheels on it! :D

I had to buy a required package from the school bookstore, about $1000. I looked up the books first on Amazon to see if I wanted to just buy the ebook package and the physical texts separately if I wanted them, but even used it was cheaper to buy from the bookstore. I can't wait to get them! 20 pounds? That's crazy!

So what classes are you guys taking in your first semester? I figure they are about the same but I'm curious. I'm taking pharmacology, fundamentals, and health assessment.
