Children left to rot in their cribs

Wow.. words cannot describe what those children must be enduring. Unfortunately, many countries have no resources to setup mental health facilities, and thus that population suffers.

Heartbreaking. Reminds me of a story I recently heard on the radio about abandoned babies in Russian hospitals. Stories like this have really made me contemplate adoption:

"Last winter, another patient in a central Russian hospital noticed a room of abandoned babies with their mouths taped shut to stop them from crying. Her cell phone video shocked the country when it was played on national television. Reports of babies tied down in their cots are common. Many believe that's because hospital staff are seriously overworked.

Boris Altshuler of the Child's Right group says it's often immediately clear to visitors that abandoned babies are left to "rot alive."

if the kids were mentally ill when they went in they should certainly become that way!

Back in the '90s on his first tour of the former Yugoslavia, my husband (he's not a medic) wound up working in one of the mental hospitals for a couple of days. He said it was heartbreaking then and he wasn't surprized to hear that it's still going on.

The orphanages in the former East Bloc and the "dying rooms" in Chinese orphanges are a disgrace to humanity. But as my husband said, humanity has always struck back at the weakest, most vulnerable, and unwanted members in times of war and economic hardship.

A better question would be where is the RedCross and UNICEF when it comes to inspecting these facilities and approving foreign aide?

That sucks, but that's what happens in the those third world countries where health care is not a priority.

Here it's a priority because people make money from it.

Another horrible example of how low humanity has sunk. In thousands of years of human existence the human race has never learned how to treat another human. Animals treat each other better in the real world of life.

Horrible...absolutely horrible.

However, we have to realize that not every country is advanced as the US, Great Britain, etc.

These horrors once existed in the USA and other advanced nations as well. The 'civilized' West was not always so civilized, enlightened and educated. Much of the humanity we have in health care has only developed over the past 100-150 years.

Now that the word is getting out, the more advanced countries that have learned from their own mistakes will hopefully offer help and help that system to change. Is it too late for many of those neglected? Probably. But things will change in that country for the better from now on.

What a terrible tragedy. Can we really justify lynching the caregivers, though? What kind of conditions are they working in? How many children do they have to care for? I know a lot of mentally ill/retarded children are very strong and very violent.

I'm afraid there are no simple solutions. It's just a hell for everyone I'm sure and I am sorry they are having to endure it.
