I am starting my third chemistry class on January 12th (tomorrow!!) and was wondering if anyone was interested in forming a study group (or if there is already one on here that I did not see yet?)
Kristi :)
Thanks for the advice. His syllabus was just as confusing as he was, unfortunately. The best I can gather, he throws out the lowest of everything BUT the lab quizzes/assignments (where he gave this "pop quiz" today...figures). Thankfully, someone in class asked if we could use calculators on tests, and he said yes, so I assume this is the first and last time I'm going to have to deal with this no calculator thing. I guess after I get the quiz back I'll talk to him about my concerns and clarify the future expectations, although given the MLK Holiday, that will be two weeks from now...ugh... I know my algebra is rusty, but I think I could get it back up to speed with just a little reviewing. As for researching professors, unfortunately I don't have that luxury. The school does not post who will be teaching any given course. You can contact the department head directly, who will often tell you (which I actually did), but I couldn't find anything online about him. Maybe I don't know the best websites or something, but he wasn't on ratemyprofessor.
I guess I'm just feeling kind of stupid, because I probably could have figured it out if I hadn't been so taken aback by the whole thing. I saw, for example 6x/x + 2(3x + 3)= 22 (or something to that effect) and my mind just went blank. Oh...and then I couldn't remember how to do 300 x .40 by hand.
I've got to stop obsessing and just move on...I know part of this is just my perfectionist tendencies. I hate being bad at stuff, not to mention I want to be a nurse sooo badly that the thought of this negatively effecting that end goal is making me a bit crazy...
I would also suggest a book that I bought at Borders to help me when I had to brush up on my Algebra skills it is called "Maran Illustrated Effortless Algebra" and it is published by The Maran Family and written by a guy who has his Ph.D in Mathematics at Yale. I think it does a good job bringing things down to the most basic level. Hope it helps.
If I were you, I would go to your instructor and express your concerns about not having had Algebra in awhile and see if there are any on campus resources (such as a math lab, tutoring, etc) you could use as well as to ask him about how much the quiz is worth and if there is any extra credit or anything. Good luck!!:wink2:
At least I'm not alone :) I am trying to study tonight to get a head start and man this stuff is no joke!! I have my BS in psych and have never been so overwhelmed! Owell, its gona be a long road to become a nurse, but everyone says its worth it so I hope they are right!! So how do these study groups work? It may be a dumb question but I dont know... do you just post your questions on here or something?

From what I have seen with these type of study groups people just post their questions and then others try to help them and vice versa.
OK, yesterday was our second day of class. The only thing we have focused on so far was mostly math. Sig-Figs, Scientific Notation, Rounding, etc. And she started explaining the study of chemistry at the end of class yesterday. We won't have to memorize ANY of the elements, thank God! She said we aren't majoring in chemistry so it isn't necessary. Besides I already know the ones that apply to nursing.
My teacher is awsome! I hope everyone else is having a good week. Let me know if you need math help, I love math. I can email you practice problems and the math "rules"
I am also thankful for this group. I am going to need all the help I can get. I am in my last semetster of pre reqs and I am pushing myself to the limit. I want to hopefully start nursing school in the fall so I took 17 hours this semester. I am taking Gen Chem, Chem Lab, Eng II, Micro Lab, Statistics, Humanities, and Macroeconomics. I know, I know, but I figure if I can't handle all of them then I can drop the Macro and Humanities for the summer. I am really going to try my best though. Good luck to everyone this semester! Let's get this study group going. I start my classes on Tues.

Trust me , I know exactly how you feel. I am really good at math but I also have math amnesia. So, I constantly have to refer to my HESI study guide to refresh my math skills, any time I have a placement test or something like that. It is a great book, and we need it for school anyways. I didn't know that until about a month ago so I had to buy it again, after selling the first copy. If you are interested I will give you the ISBN but I am sure there are many math for dummies types of books.
