***Chemistry - Fall 2005***

Who else is taking Chemisrty this semester? I thought maybe we can check in with each other, and help each other out.

If there is enough of us maybe we can even get a sticky.

I am taking Health Science Chemistry 1.

Chemistry is kicking my butt. I don't like the instructor or the text book. (Maybe it's just the chemistry I don't like, but I don't think it should be as hard as it is for me.) Anyway, I was wondering if any of you know of some good internet resources or perhaps a good supporting text.

Does your school offer tutoring? If so, and if all possible, USE IT!!! :) It helps so much to have one-on-one help sometimes.

As far as a book, I'm not sure, but there maybe a Chemistry for Dummies, or a Chemistry Cliff Notes-type book. I bought one for my A&P class before I took the class, and I know there is an Algebra one out there too.

Chemistry is hard. For myself, if it weren't for going to tutoring, I'd probably be failing! I think I understand something, then I get home and I don't have a clue!!!!!!

Good luck!!!

Paula7: Good luck on your exam & on Stoichiometry!

Make sure you learn it because depending on what your instructor will cover in your class, you will probably have to balance reactions, etc., for later things as well.

My advice is the same as above, if your school offers tutoring, use it! :) It has helped me tremendously!!!!!!!

What text books are people using?

My text is Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Silberberg.

Fun: My school does offer tutoring. I will check it out. Thanks.

My book is "Chemistry: The Central Science" by Brown, LeMay, & Bursten

TXKAT: Please do, I'm sure it will be such a help to you.

thanks fun to care. yes we are balancing equations already. (actually did that before the stoichiometry! :crying2:

is this sememster over yet??? :p

Well the book that we have that the teacher never uses is Cracolice & Peters (2004) Introductory Chemistry: An Active Learning Approach, 2nd edition,

We finished up our lecture for our 4th test, which will be on Monday.

Over all, I think it will be easy...if I can get it down. LOL Make sense? haha It doesn't totally blow my mind like the other things did.

This test will cover three chapters & include:

Atomic Radius

Ionization Energy

Electron Affinity

Electronegativity

Acidity According to Periodic Trends

Basicity According to Periodic Trends

Metallic Characteristics

Metalloid Characteristics

Nonmetallic Characteristics

Strength of Covalent Bonds

Lewis Structures and Valence Electrons

Lewis Model for Covalent Bonding

Bond Polarity

Hybridization of Orbitals

VSEPR and Bond Geometry

Molecular Orbitals

All that said, lol, it really isn't much...hardly any math compared to previous exams!

It all sounds worse than it really is! Luckily, I have the weekend to study, and to make sure I know how to draw the Lewis Structures, etc.

4 more classes! (2 lectures, 3 labs, 2 exams, 1 presentation)00000012.gif

Good luck on your test!! We have already covered several of those topics in our class. Does not seem so bad but some things are still pretty confusing. I think because I can't relate it to real life. Anyways good luck on your test!! I think our teacher just likes to skip around which is why we have covered some of the stuff you have gone over. Our teacher does not go in order.

Thanks! :)

I think instructors have their own methods, even if they were using the same book.

It seems some of this stuff could have gone earlier, but I'm glad it's not. As you said, some of it's confusing, but I should be ok by Monday. It *SHOULD* be a easier test than the past two.

I have 55 questions for homework which looks like a test and I am having problems with a couple of questions. The first one is:

Double and triple bonds form because:

A) the ions involved have charges larger than one

B) the atoms involved have high electronegativies

C) single covalent bonds do not give all of the atoms in the molecule eight valence electrons

D) one of the atoms in the molecule has more than 8 valance electrons

E) there is at least one hydrogen atom involved in the bond

I am thinking it is either C or D. Any thoughts???

The other question is:

Which one of the following elements forms two or more ions with different ionic charges?

A) Fe

B) K

C) O

D) F

E) Ca

I cannot find this anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated. :) Thanks!

Answer to your first question :C (D cannot be possible.. and even if it is, it will be highly reactive having an extra electron in a different shell without the nuclear charge to help stablize it) -also.. think lewis structures.. anything over 8 electrons would be a violation of the octet rule.

Answer to your second question: Fe (it can be 2+/3+)

I was actually going to be a biochemistry major (premed) so, if you have any questions you guys can feel free to private msg me!
